Ever purged your collection in pursuit of one bag? How did it go?

Hi Loquita and everyone on this thread :)

I'm not sure if I read it here, or it was on the Big Ban Buddy Club thread, but I always remember the "one in, one out" rule people were talking about.
...If you have to have a new bag, you have to let one go that you already have.

That has really stayed with me.

I was starting to go too crazy with the bags there, but decided to slow down. I have been really good!
Now I'm eyeing a bag... it's a HG...it's reeeally calling my name...
but I'm very inspired by you and others that have talked a lot about this, and really want to be deliberate in these purchases. So I think I'll use that one in/ one out rule too.
I'll sell one of my Chanels that I'm not really that crazy about, then really enjoy this new bag (if/ when I get it.)

I figure if it's a "mistake" and I miss the old bag too much, I can get another one down the line as it's a seasonless one that I'm thinking of letting go.

Thanks for letting me share.

PS This rule would have me not feel guilty :)

^ Good job!! You're on the right path.... if you collection is more than you need, then definitely sell one off to fund the HG that you have. It will make attaining the HG all the much sweeter. Good luck!

i really really love this thread, though this is the first time I post

YES, i did purge my collection in pursuit of 1 bag.. This is how it happened

- years ago, i sold almost all my LV bags to fund new chanel bags. at top, i got almost 5 chanel in 1 year. this is crazy and my friends all commented on why i always get new bags. DH didn't say much but I know he does feel I got much more than I need.

- then, i got 2 vintage H kelly earlier this year. i decided that i should further trim down my collection (say 10), only keep those I use, and sell those seldom use/not loved anymore to fund new bags.

- from Jan to end April, i'm busy on putting up things for sale. guess how many bags I've sold???

That's 4!!! i sold my red marc jacobs elise, fuchsia tod's D bag, 2 vintage chanel bags.

- I'm putting up some clutches (LV and prada) as well, coz I just use them once/twice a year.

now, there're around 11-12 bags in my collection. i feel it's more happier to have the bags that I really treasure, instead of having tons of bags (that's me, no offense).

i'm proud to show new bags to DH now, and stick to the "one-in, one-out" policy.

That's fantastic, billbill!! You sound really content, and that's what counts. :yahoo:

Thanks for posting and please keep us informed of how you are doing with your collection overhaul...it's exciting, isn't it? :smile1:

Well hubby was kind enough to get enough money together in order to buy me a new bag, it is a wishlist bag but not actually on my wishlist on here but it was the first bag that i discovered and fell in love with since i joined TPF, it is currently in transit from Shopbop USA and i am MEGA nervous for it to get here and see if i like it, i really hope i am not disappointed when hubby was nice enough to go through this for me...

Haha just read what i put above ^ - must of had a psychic foresight moment, i am really sad to say that i DID end up disappointed, after my hubby struggled to save the money (and literally left us broke) in order to buy this bag for me then it arrived damaged, the best part is that if i send it back then it will cost me some more on top of the £130 i paid in duties and taxes for it and i have been called "hysterical" for being upset about this....

Just checking in to announce that *2* bags I've been hunting for became available this past week, so I bought them both!

I'll post pics when I get the second one (got the first already).

This brings my total number of bags to FIVE (plus two clutches). I think I am DONE! :yahoo:

Woot woot, Doreen! Big congrats on getting your two bags! How fantastic.

I think there's a big sucking sound coming out of my closet. I sold a couple more bags--one that I really LOVED but that was just all wrong for me and I barely carried it--this thread really helped me make that decision and I don't regret it. Plus, the new owner will get the benefit of hopefully really enjoying it by using it.

Now my challenge is to enjoy how sparse my collection is and enjoy carrying the ones I have kept. There is still a style or two that I would really love to get but I am thinking carefully. It's nice to have money aside to decide if I want anything. I'm not sure now...I think I might be good.

I feel like I now need to take a step back because I've been pretty brutal selling off several bags so quickly. I'm getting down to my favorites and don't want to do anything stupid!:smile1:

Thanks, Tejas! Buying 2 in one week is a bit of a splurge, but I've wanted both bags for several months. I also needed some retail therapy -- it' been a stressful month.

I know what you mean about slowing down on the purging. Now that I have a lean collection, I think hard before I sell something off or buy something new. Having a slimmed down collection has removed a lot of the "urgency" from buying bags. I know there will be other great bags so I'm not pressured to buy right away, and I know everything in my collection is there for a reason so there's no need to purge without giving it a lot of thought.

It's amazing how telling people that I am going to sell some bags has helped me to get my act together. Ok, the camera died while I was taking pics for the listings but I'm still motivated to do it.

It helps that I have just taken delivery of a bag that really works for me and I've had a good think about my bag carrying habits and...I really love wearing bags messenger style. This made me look at 2 bags in my cupboard that weren't on my original chopping list but now they definitely are, so my list has gone from 3 bags to cull to 5.

^^^ bought one, and sold one all in the same day! I don't plan on buying any more unless one goes to make room for it. I've sold 5 since this thread started. I never would have gotten up the energy to do it by myself. I think I am down to 16 every day bags and a couple of small clutch type bags and a couple of special occasion bags. this is pretty good for me and it doesn't make me crazy to have this #. it works for me. but I like to have a collection. I could let 2 or 3 more go but no hurry. I love my collection the way it sits now.

I unexpectedly sold a bag on bonanzle that was sitting there for a couple months, so that was really nice.... i just got two wallets and two bags in, so my purging is not doing so well. If only the sales were a bit better! I'll probably list a couple things once I get back from my trip this weekend.

Overall though, since this thread started I've sold about 10 bags, so I can't complain!
