eBay, etc. General Question/Answer Thread

Just want to share what happened this past week with a designer handbag I sold. Winner finally paid after I sent her a reminder 3 days after the bidding ended. I shipped the item to authentication center and waited a week to get paid. When I got paid I was surprised how much ebay took from my profit. Fast forward to Friday, I get an email from buyer saying she wants to return the item that is final sale because its not as described. I was shocked this person is saying this. Well as you know with selling authentic designer bags over 500.00 you ship the item to the ebay authentication center in Nevada. Which I did and they check your item to make sure it is authentic and item is as described. So when the buyer pulled this "item not as described bs" Ebay denied her request to return the item and I was relieved because I truly believe the buyer got buyers remorse and that is the only reason why she wanted to return the item. I even reached out to the buyer and said, did you read the description? The bag is exactly as described and it is authentic. She said she is not questioning the authenticity but it doesn't seem like the same bag in the listing. Again, buyers remorse is what she has. So in the end for me I think it was a good thing my bag was sent over to Authentication Center first rather than the old way of selling where as you ship directly to buyer once you get paid. Happy it worked out for me!

You mentioned " I was surprised how much ebay took from my profit." Can you explain what percentage ebay took? Did they take extra profit for using their Authentication services? Is this your first time selling with ebay? I am thinking of offloading some purses on ebay and still skiddish about it. I'm glad to hear the Authentication team denied the return as it was authentic and described in the correct manner.

I was a top-rated seller on eBay for a few years and I still hate selling there. It's been discussed on TPF before, but consignment may be easier for you.

Ebay's fee on the handbag category is 15%. (Until it changes, there's no additional charge for those items that are part of the Authenticity Guaranteed program.) The 15% FVF is calculated on the total of the buyer's payment, which includes item price, sales tax, shipping and any other fees the seller may have opted into, i.e., promoted listings, etc.

The Poshmark 20% is looking more reasonable since they don't charge the fee on tax or shipping, the seller doesn't have to pay for shipping, and if there is a return, it won't cost the seller anything.

Thank you.. That's helpful to me..
I was aware of eBay's fees, I've sold there off & on for years but have been considering listing on PM. It sounds like the fees will average out to about the same.

I resisted listing on PM for a long time but now it is my favorite selling site. I love not having to figure out what the shipping is going to cost ahead of time.

Looking for some thoughts and advice about a likely Item Not Received claim coming my way through eBay.

I posted a $600 item by Express International Post from Australia to Israel on 17 January. At some point I noted that there hadn't been a tracking update since 20 January when it was scanned at a midway transit point - which I wasn't happy about - but I knew the buyer would get in touch if there was a problem... which she did, asking on Feb 1, "do you know where it is?".
Note there is something of a language barrier but she has OK English as she sent several messages prior to purchasing.
I apologised for the problem right away and have made contact with her (all through eBay of course) a number of times since then, using Google Translate on some of the messages I've sent to her in addition to English, but she doesn't reply.
For example, I've asked her to check if anyone else at her address might have accepted the delivery, or a neighbour, but no response.
In fact she's never responded to anything in my messages, but has simply sent me the "do you know where it is?" message on three occasions.

I've been doing my best to find out what's going on and I lodged an official enquiry on 3 February. Israel Post (or their contractors) took over the parcel on 20 January at the transit point and no updates since that time.
I've spoken to Australia Post International three times and their advice is that the parcel can't go missing and that it's been delivered. I've asked for evidence of this and they can't give me any :whut:

On 17 February the buyer can make an INR claim, which the tracking supports. I don't have any reason to doubt that she's telling the truth except that I have to consider all possibilities. On about the same date I can instigate an investigation through Australia Post and Israel Post, which I plan to do. Aus Post has basically read me the riot act, warning me about mail fraud! I have nothing to hide and would like some compensation for the missing item if possible.

Until now Australia Post International Express has been fantastic no matter where I've shipped. I've had a few nervous moments and delays with the standard service but Express has been 100% reliable. Always a first time I guess.

If anyone has bothered to read this far and has some words of advice for me, thank you !!

I can empathize. I use USPS and for the most part, everything goes smoothly - until it doesn't. And that's so stressful!

Unfortunately, as far as ebay is concerned, if there's no tracking showing delivery, you will have to issue a refund by the end of the timeframe they give you to respond to the INR case (if and when she opens it).

I don't know whether Aus Post has a missing mail search ability as does USPS when tracking stops. If so, I've found that opening that type of search (with USPS) will often shake the item loose from wherever it was stuck.

Also, when missing mail searches are opened (at least in USPS), they can use GPS to find where the last location of the item was and they'll check with that location's supervisor/postmaster. Maybe Aus Post does something similar.

If they (Aus Post) know it was delivered, they should be willing and able to give you some type of documentation and possibly be able to identify the address to which it was delivered.

I don't know whether you might also have the ability to recall the package (if they can find it) and have it returned to you.

Good luck. It sure sours your experience when crap like this happens and it's totally out of your control.

Thanks BeenBurned. Yes, it's totally, frustratingly, out of my control.
I'm resigned to issuing the refund due to the buyer, no problem. I'm very disappointed that she hasn't received the item and has had a bad experience buying from me.

Unfortunately missing mail search won't accept the foreign address for me to start a search.

Israel Post haven't provided tracking (if they took over the parcel as Aus Post claims) and Australia Post haven't been open or transparent. I can't investigate directly through Israel Post due to the language barrier.

I was advised by Aus Post that the international issue and joint responsibility of the two postal services means that Australia Post has no authority to issue any tracking information without Israel Post first providing that information. Because Israel Post haven't done any scanning or provided any tracking updates since their acceptance of the parcel and made it public for me, the buyer and for eBay, Australia Post can't give me any documented proof

Express International Post is a very secure, premium service in theory with regular tracking updates so whatever happened here shouldn't have happened. The buyer paid for standard post but I upgraded (paid $65!) for speed and secure delivery.
Unless all the postal documentation came off the package I believe it will be located when I start the investigation. Fingers crossed anyway because I've lost a lot of confidence in the mail system.

If the package is insured, you should be able to file a claim and collect for the loss. Sometimes you have to be a PITA and push for the refund but since there's no proof of delivery and tracking does show that it was loss while in postal possession, it should be covered.

I wish you the best.

Hello All,
I posted on pg 653 what happened with a designer bag I sold on January 1st. Long story short, buyer got buyers remorse and contacted ebay for a return because she felt item not as described. eBay refused the return request. Remember the handbag is authentic and exactly like I described in the listing. The bag got mailed to the ebay authentication center and they confirmed its authentic and item is exactly as described.
Now its Feb 14th, and I get an email from ebay stating this buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on Jan 1st. She is disputing the charge directly with their payment institution. She is requesting I return the funds due to item not as described.
I cannot believe this woman not only waited 44 days, and has the handbag and is still insisting a refund. Ebay states in the email to respond by Feb 19th which I will. Has anyone here had this experience before? This is really pissing me off! I have never experienced such a frustrating situation like this before. I just can't believe people do this and have time to play games like this. Needless to say I will challenge the dispute. I really hope they don't take her side.

Do NOT contact ebay through their contact links. Those CS people are outsourced help and don't have the power to do much more than tell you what you want to hear.

First and most important, respond to the chargeback with a brief and factual reply stating that the item was authenticated and found to be as described through the "authenticity guaranteed" program. Explain that ebay closed the dispute in your favor since you have a no return policy and item was found to be as described.

What you should do next is contact ebay through either one or both their Facebook or Twitter pages. Those sites are manned by real ebay employees who have the power and ability to access your account and see what's going on.

Don't post publicly. Send a message through their PM. They'll verify your identity and help you.

I don't use Twitter but did have occasion to use the messaging through FB and got my problem resolved within hours.
