Documenting Chanel CC markings through time

It seems that the 2009-ish era was when Chanel decided not to guild the gold hardware in real gold any longer. So if you have a bag in the 12 series, it may be possible to have the hallmark and it may be possible not to have it. The hallmark really just signifies if the gold hardware is plated with real gold.
With the outrageous increases in price, you would think Chanel would return to using real gold, but such is life. And we continue to buy the bags regardless.

Hi TPFers, I searched hard for articles that will help me identify the meaning of this mark. Has anyone came across this type of hallmark? This is a series #1 purse and I'm curious what the symbol means. :)

^^ i believe that is the hallmark of the gold plater. I cannot discern what it is. Chanel seems to have many vendors that do this service on the CC gold locks which is why there are many different hallmarks. Hermes ghw also has markings on their buckle plate.

Just like how your jeweler will sign the rings or bracelets he or she designs for you...chanel CC's are likely signed by a specific plater or vendor. We just cannot tell which companies do this because their logos are obscure.

(I got my answer to my previous question from this thread when my post was moved to this thread so my previous post does not need answering :P )

However, I have another question about the CC hardware in the front. I have two Caviar jumbos with me, one with Gold HW and another with Silver. The CC for the Gold is flat while the Silver one is rounded. Here are two photos to show what I mean by flat vs rounded. Can anyone shed some light as to why there is a difference? Is it the year they were made in? I know the Silver HW is the 2009 version, I am not sure about the Gold but it was just purchased from the boutique in London.

If anyone knows the answer please share! Thanks :)

I realize this question is old but I have been wondering the same thing.

I just bought a 2009 caviar jumbo and it had the flat CCs (silver). Is there any reason some bags have the flat CCs and others have rounded ones?

Hello, there are 3 different kind of stamps that You can find on vintage Chanel bags! Like in pics added in this post and can be on the C on the left or on the right either on the top or the bottom and this indicates country of manufacture, France or Italy! This stamp has been used only on vintage bags with gold hardware, and should indicates that hardware were gold plated: in modern bags these kind of marks are no more used .... In vintage there must be a stamp when it's a twist lock or Turlock but when it is just a logo or a pendant it possible you won't find it and it's good too

okay,. i just checked, here are the markings I have for my 3 Chanels:

(1) Pink Classic Caviar Gold HW (10", $1595 from NM) has a "W" or "M" symbol on the upper left CC symbol

(2) Black Classic Caviar Gold HW (10'', $1595 from Saks) has a "square-like" symbol

(3) Black Classic Caviar JUMBO Gold HW ($1695 from NM) has 3 stroke marking as showed in echo_23's picture, EXCEPT my 3-stroke is located at the bottom right of the CC symbol.

Could someone please shed light on this topic ? I will post the pic as soon as the battery is done charging :)

Dear pink piano,

I'm looking at a Chanel jumbo black caviar series 1237xxxx and it has the same three lines marking at the bottom of right. Therefore wanna check with you is your production number around 123xxxxx ish ?

Can I ask what they use now to make the gold hardware? All my gold hardwares pieces have the "W" or "M" on the C. I haven't purchased a gold hardware piece in recent years. Do they no longer mark them?
