I have a lot of older bags. I have noticed that the hardware color can vary slightly from bag to bag. Sometimes it's a brilliant yellow gold and sometimes it's a softer color.

I am getting more confused now...
So... ANY hallmark..no matter the design...means they are 24k gold plated? While modern bags WITHOUT the hallmark means it is a gold/alloy mix plating?
By gold plating, are we only referring to the flap bags or any bags with the CC turnlock?? What about the vintage GSTs that don't have a turnlock? I am also assuming the new GST do not have 24k gold plating, but instead have the gold alloy mix plating? Thank you so much!!!
None of the bags have pure gold plating. They all have an alloy mix containing gold. The hall marked bags had an alloy containing 24 carat gold. Don't know what the content is with the new ones. The older ones also had an alloy containing gold, but the marking was not standardised until sometime in the 1970's to early 1980s.
All metal plating is laid over another metal base. This is why the plating wears down over time and different metals react differently to plating and some wear down faster than others.
Thanks so much! Hmm... So if they are all alloy... Why is the topic of hallmarking of such great concern then? Is it a purely aesthetic issue or do the vintage hardware really last longer in color? Thank you!
Well. Personally, I like the hall marks, but only to the extent that they are interesting because there are several different patterns of hallmark.
However, I like my vintage bags with no hallmark just as much. So at some point in the future, people will look back and say, "Oh, these bags had a small hallmark on the CCs for about 25 years - then it disappeared again. I wonder why....?" eventually, it will just be a date indicator... hallmark equals bag from late 1970s to early 2000s.
Ok - Tho I've read through all the pages and have seen some pics of chanel's with the hallmark on the top left C - I haven't been able to figure out if this is indicative of a certain productions year, model etc...I"m looking into buying a used caviar jumbo with ghw and it has the mark on the left... I've MOSTLY seen the mark on the right so I'm just wondering if its a fake?
