Hey doc! I've been meaning to post and give you a big shout out for the amazing job you did restoring my B30 in miel croc!! I was disheartened when I won this item in an auction, and realized that it had third party work done to it and needed additional work, and so grateful to you for helping me restore this bag! You made the process easy and painless. I am very pleased with the results, thank you!! :hugs:

When I wiped the back of the bag today some sticky residue started appearing and the skin started peeling off. Does this mean the bag had been treated? I’ve never seen this happening to box before.

Thanks!

Hi Doc, Sorry if this is repeating a question, but I started going through this thread and couldn't find the information I was looking for. I bought a brand new black box birkin and am wondering what products I should buy to maintain it. In particular, I'd like to make sure that it's protected against accidental spills, getting caught in the rain etc. Also, what are the best products to use to help with those inevitable scratches etc it will incur?

Hello! I contacted you on eBay regarding upkeep/cleaning/buffing our scratches on my Hermes Constance 24 black box Kelly. Can you give me some pointers? Much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi I don’t see any major scratches in your photos so I’ll assume you have only light scratches you are concerned with ?
Once scratched the surface is no longer perfectly smooth, and since this is no longer a living animals skin it will not be healed as in an organic process , which I sure you all know.
So many times people think because the bag has been spaed the scratches are gone or removed ; this is not a truth.
With spa cleaning , conditioning and perhaps a neutral polish the pigments in the leather often move to the lightened areas of the scratch thereby making it look less noticeable.
With box calf’s highly desirable patina one does not have a surface free from scratches but rather many many fine scratches and movement of pigment into said light scratches and then buffed to a lovely sheen/shine which also plays to the eye in a most delightful way ….
So , while the first scratches maybe distressing a nice clean and conditioning followed by a proper hand buffing will make your box calf look better in the interim period until you are at the full Monty patina that most of we the box calf affectionados rejoice in .
I have a list of tested products in a thread in the Hernes reference section.
Also I have You tubes showing the process of home spa of box calf . Please note you can try a home spa at your own risk …,

All the best doc

Hi there
A

Almost looks like you don’t have stitches there …like they might have gotten rubbed away .But if it’s got stitches still but they’re covered up by some paint or filler . Probably the color work can be removed. (many but not all types of color work products can be removed fairly easily ) .
I hope this helps ?
All the best
Doc
Hi Doc, sorry for the late reply. After closer inspections yes there are no stitches. Do you think this is fixable? I asked an ex Hermes artisan and she said it is not possible to sew that area. If its not fixable fo you think it will compromise the usability of the bag?

Also the leather tab holding the handles looks like it has a very small tear. Since it is Ardennes leather I'm not sure if its still available to replace. Do you know about wether Ardennes leather is still available? Thank you so much for your help!

Because I am not examining the bag in person I can’t answer with precision.
But generally if you have tears and cracks this is an indication that the leather ihas become dry and weakened enough to get torn and cracked . So , how long you can carry it without issues ? That’s not a question I can answer with any sort of accuracy.
Is Ardennes leather still in the stock room at Hermes put aside for repairs ? I don’t have this answer either.
I would ask H how much repairs might run …and ask yourself this question
Is it worth repairing one part of a bag that is weakened and irreparable in some other area ?

Sorry I wasn’t of more help .
Very best of luck
Doc

Hi Doc,

I just purchase a Evelyne online it’s in need of TLC. I got some saddle soap but not sure if it can be used on Hermes bags. Should I just condition it? The last photo is after I conditioned it which I think looks so much better but I want to get the spots out if possible.

Hi Doc,

I am long time reader, first time asker!

I recently purchased this antique (pre 1945 date codes!) HAC 50 in toile and Vache Natural. While I love the worn patina and see the ware as history, I want to stabilize the very dry, cracking leather so that I can use it occasionally. What do you recommend to breathe some life back into this leather?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you! IMG_8338.jpeg

Hello there ,
Wow great project and very cool bag. Couple of questions is this leather deeply cracked and possibly flaking ?
Do you intend to get the hardware replaced ?
If yes to the later I’d take it to H and ask about replacing the turn lock first …before doing treatments.

I’ll check back …
All the best doc
