Hi Doc,

I just purchase a Evelyne online it’s in need of TLC. I got some saddle soap but not sure if it can be used on Hermes bags. Should I just condition it? The last photo is after I conditioned it which I think looks so much better but I want to get the spots out if possible.

Hi there ,
Very cool natural/fauve barenia Evie with patina !

If you have spots and stains on an unfinished leather rarely can they be removed …. Even with cleaning .

By conditioning before attempting to clean then essentially the dirt and stains are then below the conditioner you have applied.

But your bag looks better , and the patina is cool. So good on you

Hopefully the spots are not a deal breakerr.

Take heart in that , many barenia lovers will know and even find your bag’s patina “desirable” spots and all.

Hello there ,
Wow great project and very cool bag. Couple of questions is this leather deeply cracked and possibly flaking ?
Do you intend to get the hardware replaced ?
If yes to the later I’d take it to H and ask about replacing the turn lock first …before doing treatments.

I’ll check back …

Hi doc,

Thank you so much for the reply!

I don’t think I will be having the turn lock replaced as I want to keep the original, antique hardware.

Yes, the leather is flaking. I have attached some close up images as well as one of the interior where you can see the preserved leather (appears to be a version of vache natural to me). The corners are cracking away as well, but because I intend to just use as display, it’s not of too much concern.

Thanks again and let me know if you need any more details.

Even for display you may want to condition it .
I’d use a light creamy lotion type conditioner first sparingly first . And then repeat after letting it rest for a day . And then repeat again . I would avoid heavy waxy or thick oily or oily type conditioner at this point .
I hope this helps ?
You are welcome to co tact me though pm.

Hello dear Docride,
I’m considering buying this birkin touch from a friend, but noticed these darkening on the the exotic leather. Is this normal and can it be cleaned somehow? Thank you so much in advance! IMG_9706.jpeg

I’d love to see close ups
Could be normal
Either way I would not anticipate it’s a cleaning solution option .
Just saying
I’ll wait for additional photos

Oh, thank you so much for answering. I decided not to get it, something bothered me about this bag, I don’t know why, but I have doubts about it’s authenticity, I can’t put my finger on why..

Dear doc,

I just bought this bag from Collector Square but they sent me additional photos prior to shipping that are giving me pause. This will be my first Kelly, a vintage K32 retourne in black box calf! ($8k at Collector Square). However, I'm concerned about the cracking I see on the left sangle. Will this get much worse? I don't want to have to send it to the spa immediately and I would rather just wear it, but I'm nervous that if I have to open and close the bag constantly, the sangles will wear out very quickly. In your expert opinion, do you think the sangles will break/split quickly? Should I cancel and keep looking for a better bag/a better deal? Thank you!!!

Hi Docride! I saw the other recent post about a smooth barenia Evelyn, and I also have a vintage beauty that I love & use hard. I’m just wondering if there’s a way for me to darken it to even out the tone on the front of the bag (one on the side and the area at the top). I also wonder if it looks dry to you. I’m pretty sure the spots/discoloration are from me overcleaning it with saddle soap in the past & then the areas soaked up extra conditioner. I have always used Woly perfect gel to condition in the past. I just ordered Lexol wipes and was thinking to give the whole bag a quick wipe to clean, and then try Saphir greasy cream to try to darken it and blend the spots a bit. The Woly gel hasn’t really helped to darken or blend the areas. I’m also staying away from saddle soap because I think I use too much pressure. I attached photos in different lighting as some lighting accentuates the spots. Thanks for any advice you can offer! IMG_5830.jpeg

I have a B35 Clemence that has gotten water damage. You can see a line where the damage is all around and there was mold on the bottom. I was able to clean off most of the mold but it smells of mold still and no matter how much I clean:condition the water mark will not come off.

My insurance said to send it to H for a quote, is this fixable and does anyone have any ideas what the cost would be?

Dear all, dear docride, I have also posted this in the Ode de peau porc thread before I came across this one and I am not able delete it properly, so please, Mods, delete it there, if you think it is better that way.

A question from my side, I am very much needing to tap into your knowledge for help: I have seen a beautiful porc Kelly, beautiful supple leather, - but there are discolouration: the area where the light reached the leather is much lighter than the closed parts. Apparently it had been stored with closed flap, as the areas covered by flag and sangels are darker than the rest. Any idea, if this difference could fade away with exposure to sunlight? Or is there any other way to remove it/ blend it in? I do not want to re-colour the bag, the colour is what I love about it.

The bag is from 1992 and otherwise in a very beautiful condition and I would get it in a minute if I had a chance to getting it into a more even colour pattern again.

The bag has been to H Spa in 2018 for minor touch ups, according to the bill.

Thank you for your advice!
