Hi Doc! I have a mystery I want to solve

I purchased this market bag from TRR as a cute vintage casual bag, and no damage was stated when I bought it - but when it arrived, it had these strange pinched, almost melted-looking areas in two spots on one side. I love the bag so I don't want to send it back, and having the marks isn't make or break, but I was wondering what they are and if they are even remotely fixable (I was speculating not!)

Thank you so much for any help!

Hi there,
Cool market bag .. looks like it might be water / and then heat damage ?
Is the leather stiff and hard in that area ? ( no jokes )
If so one needs to take care as that leather maybe brittle. If it was t spendy and you otherwise love the bag … I’d say condition it and see if it helps .
You are welcome to pm me for product suggestions.
All the best

Thank you oh so much! The leather is definitely hard-ish, but not brittle - I can put a lot of pressure on it, and it doesn't effect it! It was not expensive at all, and totally worth it to keep it for me! I will PM you, as I'd love some product suggestions (I don't think I'd ever spa this anyway!)

If it’s soft and not brittle that's great news! Enjoy your fabulous under the radar Hermes bag

Hi, Doc,
I've found a Plume 32 bag, in a pretty red (supposedly)Togo leather (??rouge garance or rouge grenat or rouge H...don't quite know and doesn't even matter...I love the color!). I have condition questions for which I've tried to communicate with the reseller, but they're not responding. May I ask you to look at a couple of photos of the bag and give me any of your thoughts as to whether you think that the bag corners have been repainted? and whether you see much tarnishing on the handle hardware. The listing photos aren't great and I've tried to enlarge them/zero in, but it's inclusive to me....making the images bigger just seems to blur them, to my eyesight. I'd love your thoughts about the bag's corners/overall general leather condition, and hardware state. My gut sense is that the corners have been painted or have had some sort of product applied...it looks like the pebbled leather grain which covers the overall bag has worn away on the corners, however, the color is there...I'm not sure that grain can be worn away, but color remain intact, hence my suspicion that repainting has been done. The corners also look shiney like some product has been applied.
Thank you for any insights!

Looking at this Birkin for possible repair. Do you think this can be fixed, are there threads on repair costs on this forum?

Hello there , this Kelly bag has fine cracks on the straps and on the body of the bag. The cracks on the straps and body of the bag may or may not cause immediate problems or hindrance in use. With conditioning it is possible but not guaranteed to extend the use period as is. However the replacement of the straps could be accomplished one gives pause as the body of the bag is in similar condition particularly the flap which is not an easy repair it would require the bag to be disassembled and a new panel made ( this may or may not be accepted for this service by Hermes. The over all cost for such services may well out cost any of the discount you may get in the bag’s purchase price. Additionally the bag if accepted for restoration would be away for many months.
In the case I would recommend either conditioning and using as is or take the money you might have used on repairs and the original amount and top up your Kelly bag fund to find a bag in better shape .
I hope this helps?

Hello there
What a beautiful plume bag ! Here’s what i see in these photos , few areas of discrete color loss on corners. My sense is this looks like possibly this is original condition with some wear. ( of course I could be mistaken ask for additional photos and share them with me …if you’d like me to be more precise. I do not see in these photos typical demarcation areas so often seen with less than excellent color work .
Tarnish can be cleaned off so not of a particular concern.
I hope this helps ?

Hi, docride,
Apologies for a delayed response! Thank you for taking a look at this rouge Plume bag. I appreciate everything you noticed. I'm definitely on the fence about this one. First of all, do I need the bag (what a ridiculous question)? :P Secondly, do I take the chance on it since the reseller doesn't seem to be interested in sending me more info. (??red flags)? They accept returns if I received the bag and there was some significant damage/wear, but then I'd have to go through the hassle of mailing back to them. Ugh!! Will "chew" on it some more. Easy way out is that when I go to look at the listing, it has sold! ;) Many thanks, again, for your expertise!!

Hi Doc

After looking for ages, I finally found my holy grail black box k28 sellier w palladium guilloche hardware. The bag was in excellent condition except the front flap had some scratches from the imprints of the stitches on the sangles (first pic)..

I used some saphir universal per your recommendation thread and now those scratches are gone BUT the entire front flap feels very dry and looks patchy under certain lights (2nd photo).. not obvious when not in direct light (last photo). any advice on anything I can do? I will take to H spa eventually but had wanted to use for a bit before I do that… Thanks so much!!!

Hi Doc!

Got this Kelly in today, and I'm in doubt about whether or not to return it... Mostly because the leather is pretty cracked on the flap. The handle is cracked too but nothing a twilly can't solve. The corners show wear too but nothing too severe.

Otoh, it was a good deal, it came complete with strap and clochette and keys. Handle seems to be attached to the bag still pretty solid - no rips anywhere. And I didn't want a bag that I would be too afraid to use so I don't mind a little wear and tear, yet I wouldn't want it to fall apart in half a year.

Could you give your opinion please? Is there anything I can do myself? (I'm in Europe.)

Also: any ideas on the name of this colour?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have!

When I wiped the back of the bag today some sticky residue started appearing and the skin started peeling off. Does this mean the bag had been treated? I’ve never seen this happening to box before.

Thanks!

Hi @docride, thank you very much for your precious help, as always. There is a toile Kelly I am looking at, it has some stains on the toile part, do you think can H spa (or another leather surgeon/professional) could fix it?
Many thanks

Hi There , Ive had success with cleaning toile… but each situation and stains can give a distinct set of issues. I’d check with H first. You might not be able to get it completely cleaned … I’ve heard that a trusted dry cleaner might be of help.
I hope this helps?
Hugs, doc
