Designer Brands You Will Never Buy

I did not say I personally find them "trashy." I said that to show that other members on this forum say more offensive things than what I said and that there was no reason to say that I was being "disrespectful" when there were far more worse things said about the brand like calling a brand "trashy." And I've noticed that people tend to incorporate style with personality all the time. If a person finds something as part of their outfit "trashy" then chances are they will find the person "trashy" as well. It's almost like how people call women "s**ts" when they wear revealing clothing.

I feel pity because I think the customers are being used. They are forced into thinking they are buying quality designers when it is actually something that was probably made in a sweatshop in China so that MK can make a few extra bucks. It is overpriced for what they are and it is a rip-off of other brands. MK totally copied LV, Bal, Valentino, Prada, etc. The bags lack not only quality but also originality.

But that is just my opinion on why I don't like the brand. For those that enjoy the brand then that is fine. I just wanted to post my opinion.
I quite appreciate the fact that I can purchase a saffiano double zip tote from MK for about $300 bucks. In terms of style, I don't think that someone looking to purchase a bag in that style...like Tory Burch's double zip tote... should only be able to purchase it if they can afford the $2500 Prada version. I could afford the Prada; however, paying off my student loans seems like a more pertinent need.

If interested... an article on the production of luxury goods....

OMG I read that article. I heard Chanel did this. Sadly, I found out right after I saved up and bought my first Chanel bag. Never went back again.

I totally understand the feeling that certain items (student loans, mortgages, cars) have become more of a need than handbags! I guess it's growing up, but when I lived with my parents, before I was married, I could justify buying more bags, but now even though there are a lot of bags I want and can purchase financially, it's not a priority to me!

I have a lot of coworkers who could definitely afford 3k bags but don't think it's worth it and will instead pay for a new bathroom, vacation, or their kids education! To those people, a coach or a mk is enough of a splurge. I think that sometimes I forget that some people are not as in to bags as us purseforum people are!

Tory Burch... because I have personally found the quality to be awful
Michael Kors...I feel like no one is making an effort over there to design, just copy copy
Chanel...for that price I'll gladly head to Dior :smile1:

So I am kind of "meh" on designers as brand names -- logos in general seem like a bad idea to me! So I will never purchase a Coach, LV, Burberry, or Gucci logo print bag. Never. Obviously, most ladies on the forum disagree... I own Coach and Burberry in less "obvious" styles highlighting the leather. But if the primary color is their print I feel like I'm an advertisement for their brand vs they made an accessory I like, you know? Classic, recognizable styles - Chanel flap, Hermes Birkin/Kelly - are different, somehow.

I don't like much modern Balenciaga (from a style perspective) or Rebecca Minkoff and Dooney/Burke contrast stitching and zippers. It's a weird complaint but -- they seem so industrial. I absolutely love Kate Spade and Tory Burch styles for fun bags at prices that are conceivably affordable by normal people (eg not like $5k LVs or limited $30k Hermes!) but I've experienced both of their quality to be very sketchy given the price.

MK is dull, sure. I don't think I'll ever buy one; I'd rather get an unknown/new designer by far (and there are plenty of awesome contemporary designer in the 250-600 price range!!). But I have to admit, as a professional woman I found their fake Prada "Jet Set" tote was THE best choice for a laptop, accessories, and lunch... my coworker owned and loved hers, while I went with a $500 Kate Spade bag instead; mine was wrecked in our constant travel while her cheaper bag stood polished and professional for years. Carrying a Prada saffiano to work is too showy because it's a Prada; another coworker got tons of flak for her vintage LV which was probably $400 but screamed "I like LV!"

So, judge not. My mother - who could afford a dozen Birkins - carries her Jet Set tote with joy and pride every day, leaving pricier handbags to rot in her closet... it looks good, works well, doesn't scratch, and she doesn't mind if it does, as she'd just shrug and buy another. There's something very honest and lovely about that.

This struck a chord with me. That is how my family is too. Most of them. Not into things and live well below their means. And dont care much for things. I cant believe i am saying it on a Purseblogs forum, but reading this makes me want to go back to my roots. Thank you for sharing.

I dont currently own either but I'd take MK over Prada any day, when it comes to the saffiano totes. Prada made a gorgeous plain leather smaller hobo with silver hardware a few years ago, which at the time was too much for me to spend, and now all they make are those over structured, too-plain, too-expensive top-handle totes. There's nothing special about them that I can tell, except the flipping logo. So in effect I'd be paying $2000 for a little metal plate? The MK one is good leather, roomy, durable, and I could actually put it to some practical use rather than obsessing that I just spent 2K+ on something that I have to protect from scratches and dust.
Judging someone's social status/income/style by the brand of the bag they carry is a slippery slope to wrong. One of my favorite people works in private equity/investment banking. She could afford Chanel and LV and whatnot, and carries a simple MK bag around. Some people are not into it enough to bother. Says nothing about who they are as a person.

As a student who could only look at premium designer brands and hope to buy them one day, I had these grandiose ideas about all the bags I was going to collect in my closet. Now after years of studies that included med school, I am able to afford all the bags I could ever want, with one pay check. But I have seen so much loss and suffering that I feel guilty spending 10k on a bag when my patients cannot spend $10 for a meal. Therefore, I stick to locally crafted mid priced brands. Years ago I needed a luxury handbag for confidence, now that comes Fro within

I think it's very nice you have nice bags, Yoshi! When I was 17 I had a WOODEN pocketbook, and my crafty mother decoupaged DANDELIONS all over it! I still have that wooden pocketbook, and when I see it, it makes me laugh. Oh, Mother!

...Yes I am...and your point is? I'm immature because I'm 17? Okay you can think that. That is fine.

What happened to "age is just a number" ???

I mainly dislike Tory Burch, Kate Spade, and ...Coach for the most part, because honestly coach has been overdone, I think they ruined themselves with so many factory stores. .....I'd really like to know what kind of job I could have had at 17 to own a Celine.......and A DIOR AND CHANEL!!!! But yet here I am at 27 and all I can afford is MK....But I digress....
