Confusion Over Etienne Aigner

There is a lot of snobbery posted here regarding Aigner products, I suspect by some younger ladies. Popularity and price do not necessarily equate to quality, and this is something that one learns as you age. Aigner makes quality handbags regardless of price. I have collected handbags for nearly 40 years and own pretty much own every high-end brand, including several Hermès Kelly and Birkin handbags. (I mention Hermès simply as an example of the must have/dream bags by many.) I also own many less expensive brands including Aigner and Dooney & Burke - which also is a well-made, inexpensive handbag. Aigner Munich in particular has some beautiful bags, and I still occasionally purchase Aigner bags in the USA. There are many brands that make quality handbags that you are probably not even even familiar with. Don't let snobbery/popularity/price prevent you from purchasing a handbag that you love.

So I have just come across an Aigner bag that has an interior brass plate that says “Aigner”. This would indicate that this bag came from Germany. However, down in the lining seam is a tiny tag that says made in china. Are some of the Munich bags made in China? I read an article in this thread that says 30-40% of the Munich bags are still made in Italy, but it doesn’t say where the rest are made. Anybody know?

They are all gorgeous. Too bad the present company in the U.S. doesn‘t make them like this. You can sometimes find the Aigner bags made in Munich on Poshmark, and there are lots of them on the Luxury Closet website.

One of my most beloved handbags is this Aigner purse given to me by my MIL. She is German so it could very well be Aigner Munich. She'd had it so long she couldn't remember when she got it. Presumably sometime from 1960s-1980s. It certainly shows its age but it is just so unusual and I treasure it. She also has a few vintage Hermes scarves (that I can only pray some day I will inherit!) with the original boxes. She routinely wears them and they look fantastic, though they are probably at least 30 years old or more.
This bag definitely came from Aigner Munich. High end quality.

Thank you!
Hope more people post their Aigners to this thread. It's exciting to see vintage Aigners that aren't already in search engine image results.

The Aigner story reminds me of what has happened to Coach. I wish I still had my classic made in the USA Coach bag from decades past. It was beautifully constructed from top quality materials. Another very good German brand was GoldPfeil. They went into receivership in 2008; interestingly, a Japanese company bought them and still makes them to the same standards in small quantities for the Japanese market. https://www.le-prairies.com/hpgen/HPB/entries/30.html If I'm ever in Tokyo, I must pay a visit to their Ginza store.
