Confusion Over Etienne Aigner

My mother had this bag in the top of her closet, don't think I ever saw her use it. It is marked Etienne Aigner, 9851 Bordo. Can anyone tell me when it was made, original pricing, anything that would help me decide what to do with it. Thanks so much! I'm thinking it is from the '80's, but I can't tell you anything else. If you like it carry it. Check Ebay, maybe you can find something similar there with more info.

Nice color u have there. I personally have 2 cybill and 1 mini cybill, and other Aigner bags my latest one bought it on sale made in Italy (always choose made in Italy since made in China one is not to my appeal) but the magnet turns out not so good yes the bag using magnet to close the cover. I gotta agree with u i could have buy a Hèrmes or Channel bag but those two brands are super expensive, have lots of the fake items (not yet find fake cybill so far), and the models are boring. Well mom loves Aigner, Fendi, Ferragamo, and Dior since she was young but her most favorite is Aigner and i think it's on the gene since i also love Aigner. Have fun with cybill ladies. Ps: when u check the price of the handbags from Aignermunich's web lower price means made in China and Spain while more expensive almost €300++ means the bag is made in Italy like cybill and Carla, etc.

Yeah, the confusion regarding 'Aigner' is understandable - it *is* confusing. I remember them being hugely popular (and fairly expensive) back in the 80's. Then, evidently, they started going downhill to the point where I've seen 'Etienne Aigner' purses made with fake leather. But (please correct me if I'm wrong) evidently they're trying to revitalize the brand. They closed down for a couple of years (back in 2011, 2012 or so) to revamp and are now back with bags priced to compete with other contemporary designers (Coach, etc.) Some of them look really, really nice but I haven't personally bought any yet.

And then there's 'AignerMunich' which evidently had some connection with 'Etienne Aigner' back at some point but is now a completely separate company based with Europe with very nice - and totally different - bags. I wish I'd known of them last time I was in Berlin - I could have picked one up.

The Aigner Munich are very high end. I looked at their website, but they don't ship to the US. The bags were gorgeous.

About 2-3 yrs ago a big push was made to reach the higher end market. I do know they opened a shop in NYC, but have yet to see any of the bags in person. It's very hard to judge quality through emails. I think they want to compete with Coach in the US.

I understand what you mean but i never know that Aigner Munich closed down since my aunt bought one in Singapore in 2013. Then my sister bought Judy Garland from Aigner US in 2012 and it was also in good quality but where was it made from i didn't know since the made from was not available, my sister fonding of Coach and Kate Spade but I found a disappointment when bought a Kate Spade bag with bamboo handle because the bag is heavy and the bolt for the bamboo handle often loose free even though Kate Spade's store had fixed it, the store took almost a month just to order the gold plated bolt but it will loose free again, for Coach the name is not yet on par with Aigner but teenagers especially young workers that I know love to buy the bags.

I got Aigner handbag as gift. As they usually are not daily use the first time I used it skin all over is peeling off. It was suppose to be high quality leather but this piece is not usable. The skin is peeling and one can't use this at all. I tried to contact the customer service about it but the CSR did not acknowledge the situation. She instead told me that they just took over the company and trying to clean the mess. She mentioned that she can't do anything about it. Her disconcern of customer's spending was negligible. I use to love the brand and was excited when I was gifted that but now I really would never buy or recommend any one as the company does not care about their customers.

Hope it's okay to post this here. I have an Etienne Aigner purse that I think it is vintage, but I'd love to get an idea of how old it is. I'm guessing it's from the '70s or maybe '80s, because it's got a magnetic snap, and I think those weren't invented until the '70s, right? Anyway, the leather's like butter and I love the lucite (?) bar thing. Would love to get opinions about age and any other info (style name, if there was one) and maybe original cost. I'm uploading a photo (fingers crossed).etienneaignerblackleather3.jpg

I am thinking 80's because of the style of the A on the mirror. Plus that was when they started to branch out into other colored leather. No idea about price, but the leather looks absolutely yummy.

Thanks for your response. The leather IS yummy. So soft and supple. I instantly fell in the love with the bag when I saw that lucite (?) bar thingy. My husband pointed out that it matches the color of the mirror frame, LOL. I didn't notice because I was too busy swooning over that lucite piece. Any idea where the bag might have been made? There are no tags sewn into it at all. I'm uploading a photo (sorry for the blur) of the logo thingy (emblem?) that's on the strap in case that's a clue to where the bag was made.

I wish I knew more and could help you out. Maybe it was made in Italy because of the quality of the leather? No idea. I would look on Ebay for similar bags and they may give you a clue.

There's definitely a difference in the bags/brands. Etienne Aigner USA and Aigner Munich (Germany) are two completely different entities. The US brand is "inspired" by the brand that actually started in Germany, though Etienne Aigner debuted his initial piece(s) in NY. However...Aigner Munich luxury goods are, well, more luxurious and made in Italy. I actually visited an Aigner store in Munich and purchased a bag this year. It was close to $700. If you ask them the difference in the German stores, they'll gladly explain the delineation. One more very important thing to assist in the distinction, check the signature "A"/horseshoe on the brand. The indentation in the US-based brand is IN the curve of the logo. The indentation in the German luxury brand is UNDER the curve of the logo. Also, my German bag came with an authentication card. Check this link for more clarity: https://www.aignermunich.com/aigner-world/company. Hope this helps!
I'm living in Germany and I've seen some really nice Etienne Aigner bags. I asked the SA where they make their bags and she said in Italy. When I googled the brand there's an American website that sells Etienne Aigner's bags for around 100-200 us $ while in Germany their bags cost around 500-1500 €. Now does anyone know why they have different price and different look? The German Etienne Aigner handbags look luxurious and it is a luxury brand here while in the US websites (including Zappos), the bags are made in China and they look cheap? Does someone have an explanation about it?

I do love how they're not afraid to experiment with their bags, yet offer lines that are classic and put together as well. There's a bit of everything for everyone.

It's a shame, I think they are missing out on a lot of potential buyers, but I don't know how much is involved into expanding into overseas territory. Perhaps they have a good thing going on just staying in Europe. I live in Canada so it's a no-go for me as well.

I spoke with a friend who visited Germany and she said the Aigner store is with all the high end designer stores, like Chloe and Celine. They are trying to revamp their image in the US, but I have yet to see anything I want to buy.

One of my most beloved handbags is this Aigner purse given to me by my MIL. She is German so it could very well be Aigner Munich. She'd had it so long she couldn't remember when she got it. Presumably sometime from 1960s-1980s. It certainly shows its age but it is just so unusual and I treasure it. She also has a few vintage Hermes scarves (that I can only pray some day I will inherit!) with the original boxes. She routinely wears them and they look fantastic, though they are probably at least 30 years old or more.
