Would you dunk? This bag has light fading at the bottom corners and appears to be in great condition otherwise, much better than I had expected from the eBay listing.
I am soo the wrong person to ask that question. I tend to dunk everything first and ask questions later. I have even dunked with bleach ( no ill effects but they were beat up beginner rehab bags and since realized there are other ways to get rid of mildew). Now I am gaining a little wisdom. But I have seen others recommend dunking for an older or dry bag to have deeper penetration of conditioners allowed. I just bought a red bag I am waiting to be delivered and I may be asking the same question. And I did buy a NYC shoulder sac and a lightweight hobo in Feb both in very good condition. I ended up dunking them both, mostly so they would soak up the conditioners better for longer life.

I dunked a red watermelon tote recently, and I am so pleased with the results. The red color deepened and looks more even now, I would have no hesitation doing another red! IMG_1498254773.330867.jpgIMG_1498254785.113493.jpg IMG_1498254823.516860.jpgIMG_1498254834.684407.jpg

Love the term "beginner rehab bags". Thank you.

Well, we've recently been talking about how it can be difficult to rehab red bags and nubuck bags and I've just won an auction for a bag that is both red and nubuck! It's a Rhyder 33 Nubuck Satchel, Style No: 34018 DK RED from 2014, see the link below. I put in a modest bid on impulse in the last few seconds of the auction and I got it $79.01. But I just can't understand how anyone can treat a bag that originally cost $650 so carelessly, and hope that I will be able to rehab it!

Well, I received my Antique Nickel and Red Nubuck Rhyder 33 Satchel from Goodwill today. The bag is beautiful but dirty. The front and the inside are pretty clean but the bottom, back, and piping are spotted and stained and filthy. The pictures don't really show how dirty it really is. I was hoping that I could just surface clean it because nubuck is so tricky to work with, but I am going to have to dunk it.

Another reason to give it a bath it to try and reshape it because the bag is just one big red puddle! I have 2 other Rhyder satchels and they are structured and sit upright but this one just lays there like a rag doll!

This was an impulse buy. I already have 2 red hobo bags and one of my Rhyder satchels is a colorblock with dark orange nubuck and black pebbled leather - so I surely didn't need this bag. But I put in a modest bid and was surprised to win it - so now I have to try and clean it!

It is a pretty bag and I hope that I don't ruin it - any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Lol that's exactly what they where. I had decided at the end of last summer I wanted to seriously research how to deeply condition the handful of vintage bags I had. I had only used Lexol cleaner and conditioner from reading on a Coach board on ebay close to15 years ago. And maybe two years ago I stumbled on a few posts here on dunking a bag. But if you put Lexol conditioner on wet leather, it leaves a chalky residue. So I started googling as much as I could and by September I began exploring the Rehab thread in earnest by way of the Sacs Magnifiques you tube video. I went to a Rotary flea market and found two bags that had been badly water stained but otherwise intact for ten bucks a piece. Now here I am over 2 dozen bags later lol!

You're a more experienced rehabber than me, but I recently washed a nubuck bag. It was very dirty. Before I washed it I brushed it with a very stiff brush, a grout brush actually, and got a lot of dirt out. After washing and letting it dry somewhat, I put on a couple coats of Lexol. And that was it.

That sounds like a good plan, thanks for the tips! I don't have much experience with nubuck.
