hi ladies. I got this bag in a bundle auction and I thought I'd try my hand at rehabbing. The front stains looks like ink and hasn't budged with my toothbrush and Ivory soap scrubbing. Thinking about vinegar or giving it a dunk. Any suggestions?

Pretty bag! Ink won't budge. Any scrubbing is likely to lighten the area around the stain and make it more noticeable. Your best bet is paint mixed with conditioner to cover. You won't probably be able to cover them completely. Paint will work wonderfully on the corners and edges. The only paint I've found that covers ink is fabric puff paint, but it works better on pebbled leather when you can disguise the bump of paint as part of the pebbling.

Some outlets are freer with their hangtags than others. Years ago, they gave me quite a few. Then they started requiring me to bring in the bag that needed the hangtag. Then they stopped giving them out completely unless you had the bag and the receipt, showing you bought it there recently, because people were coming in and getting handfuls of them to sell on ebay.

Really?! People have to spoil a good thing?!

For those of you who have tried Rub n' Buff...will this make hardware with no brass color left gold again? Or is it just to spruce up scratched brass hardware? Thanks in advance!

I used it on a gold tone medallion snap on a wallet. At first it looked great, but it does not last. The scratches reappeared as the wallet was used. It's a temporary cosmetic fix.
P.S. DON'T get it on the leather!

That would be hard to do on the hardware? Does everyone just leave the bad metal on rehabs or just not buy pieces with bad metal showing?
Scratched hardware doesn't bother me much. For standard vintage turnlocks, it is easy to get a replacement, so I might change it out if it was particularly bad. I kind of like my vintage brass to look a little antiqued.

Thank you! Hmm, sounds like my options are pretty limited...whatever made the stains is really in there, dented the leather in ever so slightly. Would this type of leather respond well to a bath? If I can't help the ink without painting, I might just use this as an experiment to see how the rest of the bag cleans up.

I was thinking that too. I bought some sea sponges and thought I might be able to lightly disperse the paint. I'm hold now. Monday's are too exhausting for me to work on it tonight.

However, I did get the brown bag with the kisslock pouch today and she is taking a swim right now! The bag is in much better shape than the pictures showed. And I feel better about the $20 shipping since it arrived today!! Wow!

Hi Couturexec! I'm thinking about trying my first bag bath. What do you use in your bath? Is there a soap to water to vinegar ratio you found yo work best?

I think it might do alright in a bath. I think others have washed Dooneys before. You have to be careful with some brands because if they use glue, it can melt and stain the bag even more. That happened to me with a Fossil bag. A bath isn't likely to help with the stains at all. If it is ink, it will probably spread if it gets wet.

I just wanted to chime in on the convo regarding rub n buff. There are other products out there to help with metal that work with brass including one called vintaj they carry a line of colors and a sealer to seal in any color changes. I use it on brass jewelry....gets lots of skin contact and does not rub off. You can find it at Hobby Lobby or Amazon. There is also guilders paste as well.

I need to probably be a little pickier as I'm growing my collection and learning what styles I really like to use. I love the patina of the old bags I just wish the hardware was a bit brighter. I love the contrast. It's not a deal breaker though, I can certainly get over it! [emoji3]
