Hi, everyone. I think I've possibly damaged this purse beyond repair, so I thought I'd ask for advice here as a last resort. I bought this used leather Coach purse for $20 (at least I assume it's Coach...could be a knockoff...I know nothing about purses), and it had a small ink stain on the bottom corner. I now know that I should have left it alone (or at the very least done some research first), but instead, I made it about 100 times worse (made the stain spread and bleached out the color.) The stain is in the second photo. Any suggestions to make this usable, or is it a lost cause? Thanks a ton for any suggestions that you may have!

I think your only alternative at this point would be to try to cover it and see if it looks any better. You can buy acrylic paint at a craft store in a matching color. Mix it with conditioner (I like to use a thin one like Lexol for this) and paint in on. You can do several coats to build it up and see if it helps.

Wow, I know how you feel; ink stains are so frustrating! You can try covering it as suggested by coach 943 if you want to spend more time and money on painting, experimenting and learning. If it were my bag I would probably just decide to let it go and move on.

Thanks for the advice. I might give it a whirl.

The small acrylic paints are inexpensive, I would recommend getting a couple of colors, you may need to mix to get a perfect color match. The blue from the ink may also show in some spots so you may need a color with more red or yellow to cancel out the blue. A bit tricky, but apply thin layers and let dry in between moving the leather around as it drys.

Thanks. I actually remembered that my daughter has acrylic paints in her art set, so I mixed ochre, brown, and a little bit of white and black and got a pretty decent fix. Given the low location on the bag, someone would have to look very closely to spot it. Thanks again for the advice!

Hi ladies, any tips on the hardware and how to replace it? The bag I bought (Coach Court Bag)is in a great condition but the hardware shows pretty heavy signs of wear. The gold color is scratched so it's showing the metal underneath. I saw replacement turn locks on ebay but not sure how easy it would be to replace something like this. Has anyone tried?[/QUOTE-

The brass hardware on the bags usually has a coating on it, the coating gets scratched and makes it look like the brass has worn off. I use very very fine steel wool to remove the coating, and then some brass polish to finish. If you don't want to do that much work, just use some brass polish. I like Wenol for the brass because it has a toothpaste consistency, easy to control where it goes, and you only need a tiny dab.
Most brass can be made to look good as new this way.

Anyone try gilders paste/wax on thier bags to add dimension? They have metalics, but I was thinking of a slight recolor without dye. I've seen some people use rub n buff on leather shoes, and it gives a drastic metal finish, I'm looking for something more subtle to even out a blochy cream bag with some mold speckles.

Recent rehab -- navy Equestrian zip. Love that line -- the extra brass hardware is super cute and the leathers are very supple.

OM MY LORD!!!!!! i need some help ASAP please!!! With the site down for the last 2 days I have been a mess. I "won" 2 diff bags and they both showed up, one on tues and one today. They BOTH smell like ashtrays. The are from different locations and came in different boxes. They are both all leather bags with linings. The linings are not so bad but my god the leather is GROSS. What can I do. I do not know if they can be returned, so i need to know if its possible to get the smell out in case I can't return them. :(

It's totally possible to remove the smell! I came into ownership of a preowned Coach Hudson bag that wreaked of extremely strong cigarettes. I soaked her in a warm water, dawn, and white vinegar bath, followed by a plain clear water soak. There isn't a trace of odor left in my bag, and I'm sensitive to cig smell. It is totally gone! Do you think your linings will be safe and not bleed dye onto the leather or vice versa? And FYI, you absolutely can return them if you purchased on the bay. Message sellers first, and if they are uncooperative and the odor wasn't listed in the description, file a SNAD. They need to disclose smells in the listing.

Well...hahah that's what I did before anyone replied to my original message. Seriously it was smelling up my house and I just figured wth!!! I will probable need to soak it one more time. There was a little bleed off under the front flap where it touches the leather. But the interior lining did not take any dye...here is the water after a 2nd soak...it was worst the first time. I'm suprise the bag is still red.

Just picked up a couple of beauties at gw in need of some tlc. Just wanted to post a quick before pic of each bag. A navy City (flat as a pancake but soft as butter) and a black Court that needs some dye touch up around the edges

Nice finds! I envy you ladies who live near Goodwill stores that get bags like that! My local GW is a complete bust when it comes to vintage Coach. They did have a couple of fakes recently, displayed in the glass case up front with high price tags on them.
