I don't know for sure; it might smell. If it is moldy, you'll need to kill the mold before you dunk or you'll be making it worse. You can wipe it down with alcohol or vinegar. If you have any sunshine where you are, setting it in the sun helps.

Thanks whateve.

I'm going to contact the seller because I also found similar gray spots covering other areas of the bag, not just one area. They're really faint, but they look like the beginning of mold to me. The bag does not smell though.

If the bag was cheap, I would not have minded dealing with the spots to see if I can take care of them, but at $150, I expected the bag to be in a better condition with normal wear, slight scuffs, etc. I've bought way cheaper bags-- and I've seen some of the posts at the vintage coach bag that others have too-- that look great.

The beauty of the Eco-flo is if it wear off, it just fades away after many months of wear ( years if you switch bags constantly) as if it never was there, thereby not leaving half worn spots like other coatings do.

Hey Farmer Cyndy - Just wanted to thank you for suggesting Super Shene, worked great on that worn Sonoma strap - (see post 10326 for full story - sorry, just could NOT figure out how to quote both you and catbird9 at the same time!)

I totally understand your decision, but FYI:

Is this a leather bag?

It might be "bloom" from natural oils in the leather. It can be buffed out.

I just received a vintage (early 80s) leather bag and it had a faint grayish-white film on parts of it. After handling and conditioning the bag, it is gone.

Here's what it looks like (from the linked article above):

Hhhmm I don't think that is it because the bag I received has small, light gray spots/dots all over the bottom and I noticed more, but fainter spots, in some other areas of the bag.

Help! Hoping to get help on a dooney florentine wallet, which is vaccheta leather. Seller didn't disclose the sticker residue!!! First pic is an apple shaped sticker on the leather, 2nd pic is some sticker on the vinyl lining. Been reading that an eraser or even the magic eraser might be worth a try. Hesitant to put oil on the vachetta leather to remove the sticker--worried that it would stain. What would you try first? Is there an order on the methods suggested? Should I try an eraser before ivory and toothbrush? how would you tackle the vinyl differently than the leather? Hi everyone!

I have a Patricia I am working on, and there are a couple of mystery stains that aren't coming out. This picture is after a Dawn dunk, some direct Dawn and a toothbrush, and 2 coats of CPR (my first time using it, and it's incredible BTW). It doesn't look quite this dark in real life, but I used flash so you could see it better.

Any recommendations? I thought about using a magic eraser, but if the Dawn didn't work, I'm not sure what the magic eraser will do.

I would start with a basic leather conditioner like apple. Probably won't darken the leather after it soaks in but if it does it will only be slight. I'd do the whole leather section to make sure it's even if it does darken.

Here's what I'd try, in order:

1. Conditioner
2. Rub gently with fingertips, scrape very lightly with fingernail
3. Soft art gum eraser (magic eraser? I'd worry it might harm the finish)
4. Ivory scrub if needed

Good luck!

I think it looks great! I would be hesitant to use the magic eraser. Maybe try it first on a place that doesn't show and watch how the leather/color reacts.

For the vinyl lining I'd use goof off. For the vachetta, I'd use vinegar, applied with a magic eraser.

You need to use Blackrocks. It will make it less noticeable. With most rehabs, you can't get it looking new. If it still bothers you, you can try retouching it with paint or leather dye but it is almost impossible to cover a dark mark and make it look exactly like the other leather.
