I don't think it is that bad. Have you already used Blackrocks? That usually makes things like that less noticeable. Most of the time, we aren't striving for perfection. Some patina is okay. It would be difficult to dye just those two spots, and if you end up covering the entire bag with some kind of colorant the texture of the leather will be compromised.

You could try the paint trick: Mix a little matching paint with a lot of conditioner and then blend it in. It usually works well for worn edges; not so much for random spots, but it might help a little.

I have had great success with Blackrock on vintage Coach Sonoma black pebbled leather. Like whateve mentioned, it can make light spots and scratches almost unnoticeable.

I bought a black Sonoma a few months ago that ended up having many light spots and scrapes on the side of the bag (see seller's pic of spots - hard to see tho). I was tempted to return it as they were worse in person than the picture showed, but the bag was so beautiful I decided to try rehabbing.

I washed the bag & conditioned with leather therapy (for the worst spots I did add a tiny bit of black acrylic artist's paint to the conditioner and applied to spots only & feathered out around spots). They looked better but were still noticeable.

But after applying Blackrock, all spots disappeared. I can't even find where they are now.

Great stuff (and great forum)! Hope this helps.

My next 3 projects! All were authenticated yesterday. Two are vintage and one is about to be. I am especially excited to be rehabbing this little Compartment Bag, which I believe is the famous British Tan. Can anyone confirm that? Plus, the Watson is super cute and it is always a pleasure to rescue a Patty, which arguably is the most classic American handbag. Thanks.

Ooh, you'll have to let me know how things go on the Patricia...especially the wearing around the edges. I have a messenger bag in the same color that is practically mint but for a bit of wearing on the edges. Are you going to do the shoe cream mixed with conditioner thing?

(I also have a lighter colored Patricia with a couple of stains that I need to begin working on, but that's another story...)

I use Edgekote on edges. I don't have dark brown but I'm thinking that mixing black and tan might work.

Just chiming in here:

I've used the Fiebing's brown Edge Kote mixed with conditioner on worn areas like that. It's pretty dark alone, but diluting it with conditioner tones it down and seems to help it blend better. Used alone, it dries to a medium gloss finish and can be buffed to make it more shiny (I read that on the label).

I've used Meltonian shoe cream + conditioner too. It comes in many colors. The man at the local shoe and boot repair place, an old-school craftsperson type, said you don't have to match the color exactly --you'll never be able to anyway. Just pick one that's close, use light coats, and blend blend blend.

Can you post a pic of the suede under the flap?

I've been studying those early color swatches trying to decide if my little NYC Shoulder Purse is British Tan or Tabac. Your Compartment Bag looks closer to British Tan than my Shoulder Purse, which might be Tabac. (The usual disclaimers about different lighting and different monitors applies.)

Hi! I spent some time looking through the color swatches too, searched online & also compared some of my bags. BT is described as a rich golden tan with a slight red tint. Tabac underside looks brown to me.

A few of my bags for comparison:
front: British Tan
middle: I had thought Tabac but not sure.
back: Tabac

BB- Looking forward to seeing your after-rehab pics!

Maybe the middle one is Mocha. I'm pretty sure my Pattys (I have 2) are Mocha. I love the early Coach shades. They are very of their era (which for me were the years I was growing up). Very nostalgic and American Century.

Thanks! I was thinking I could try comparing that middle one again in better lighting. It's a United Airlines Stewardess bag & I've wondered if it came in limited colors that might help with figuring it out.

I love the early bags too. I smile imaging the life they've had. :)
