Hello,

I picked up a dark brown Coach Waverly Soho for $ 1 at a thrift store a while back. It was dirty, with color loss, misshapen, but I thought it might be a good rehab for me.

I dunked it a couple of weeks ago (my first time dunking) and used leather CPR on it twice. One thing I noticed is that it has become stiffer, the leather is not as soft as it was before I dunked it.

Is it possible, because I am new, I rushed through the process, and didn't rinse enough?

Or did the leather just become stiffer due to being washed?

I am just wondering if I should re-rinse the bag thoroughly?

I want to dye it because it has so much color loss. Thanks.

It is likely it got stiffer because you didn't rinse it well enough. You would probably have to bathe it over again to remove the conditioner you put on in order to also get rid of the soap residue.

Did you have it authenticated? The leather on fakes isn't as soft.

If it were mine, after washing it again, I would use a heavy duty moisturizer, like Leather Honey or mink oil, and let it soak in overnight.

I would avoid dyeing it if at all possible. Dyes make the leather stiffer. Blackrocks will make it look much better. Don't rush the rehab. Often it takes several types of products to get optimum results.

The bags I dunk all get stiffer, but then with use they seem to soften again. The point of dunking a bag is a) to clean it but also b) to reshape it by stuffing it with towels, etc. When you buy a new Coach or other leather bag, it usually has a certain stiffness that mellows. At least, that is my experience. I would appreciate other perspectives because I have been wondering the same thing.

These two bags were neither that dirty or damaged, so the before-and-after is not stark.

Ok, don't shoot me for asking this...

Have any of you put a leather bag in the washing machine?

I ask because I have a larger sized bag that is not very "sturdy" I guess. The leather isn't thick and heavy. It's pretty dirty on the inside and out and I thought maybe a trip through the wash would be easier than washing it in the sink. Thoughts?

My mom has a front loader with a gentle cycle and my in-laws gentle cycle on their washer is well...pretty gentle.

Also FWIW, the bag is already distressed looking so I don't really mind if it gets more distressed.

What bag is it? Pictures?

I do it all the time, with bags that would surprise you. I have a front loader and I usually put the bag in a pillow case and wash with a bunch of towels to help cushion it. If possible I remove the straps or other removable hardware and either put it in a separate pillowcase or wash it by hand, just one less thing to scratch the leather. I've been happy with the results but there are definitely lots of bags that I would only hand wash!

It's a tano but it's pointless to ask in that section because it's pretty dead...

The inside is dirtier than the outside. I can probably turn it inside out to help cushion some of the hardware. I might have a pillowcase big enough (it's a pretty big bag...LOL) or I could use some towels.

I read that people dry their leather too. IMO that's insane.

I've turned them inside out also, depends on the bag and the location of the dirt. I have no idea how tano leather will hold up but if it's a distressed look maybe it will just add to the "character". ;)

If you decide to do it post before & after pix-it's always interesting to see how they come out!

I wouldn't do it to glove tanned because it would get more scratched. I've done it with pebbled leather Coach. Be careful; many manufacturers use glue that melts and stains when you wash a bag. I had this happen to me on a Fossil. It came out much worse than it went in.

Hi, not sure where to post this, but this thread looks more active than the borough clubhouse so maybe someone can help. Is the bottom of the oxblood edgepaint borough normal to be darker at the seams? Are they all like that or is this a flaw? Google image seems to show only a few and they are like that, but I just want to be sure. The seller noted it, but I don't think she knew how to describe, only that she didn't want a return because of it.
