Took it to Coach today and they sent it in for repair. Think happy thoughts

I hate to say this - beautiful bag, btw, but I had a Legacy Ali sent in about 4 years ago, similar issue, although what happened with mine is that the part of the turnlock that spins broke off, not the entire thing. I sent it in, and got it back with a letter and a coupon (which was very nice of them, as it was an old bag at that time). I don't think they have the hardware. What I did (again, the base of my turnlock was still there), was very carefully open up the lining on the pocket with a seam ripper and then thread a toggle button (black and wood because there was no way I was matching the finish on the hardware) through on a leather cord, that was selected to fit the whole on the flap. It worked, and I just put in Velcro in the lining where I had opened it up - I figured that eventually that button might fail as well, if the leather cord was worn through. It worked fine, and was the best that could be done. You could probably do something similar, but through the holes left by the turnlock? Or find one of the smaller bags that has the same size turnlock and harvest it?

Bummer!

I want to dunk just the lining of a Sonoma bag. It's not particularly dirty that I can see...I just want to freshen it up before gifting to my friend.

What detergent/soap would you recommend? TIA

I usually just use dish soap, the same as I would for a normal dunk. It needs to be rinsed thoroughly. If you want something easier, you could just use a mild spray cleaner that doesn't need to be rinsed.

Argh. I'm embarrassed to admit this but I was buffing my station bag in between coats of conditioner with a nail brush. I wasn't paying attention and some of the color came off so now there is a small almost bald patch. Does this mean the leather was too dry and needed more conditioner or was I just buffing too much or too hard? Going forward I'm only going to buff using a soft cloth between the brush and the bag.

My mom saw my to-do pile of bags and she really likes the City bag so it's gone up the priority list. This will be the the third or fourth bag she's filched from me. :laugh:The bag is in really good condition except it really needs to be reshaped and needs a little conditioner. Is the only way to reshape it after dunking the bag as it dries? If so, can I dunk it without soap? I'm worried about the soap drying out the leather since it is already close to where I want it to be.

Also, I know this is the Coach thread, but there isn't a thread for Herve Chapelier. Does anyone know how to repair a ripped bag? A thief stuck a knife in my bag so now there is a giant hole. Since the colors are limited and seasonal, the bag is pretty much irreplaceable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :ty:

I think buffing with a nail brush was a bad idea! It would remove color from any bag, whether or not it was dry.

You can dunk without soap. I haven't had a problem with soap drying out the leather when I dunk. I make sure I rinse really well. Maybe it's a problem with the soap you are using. I usually use an off-brand of dish soap.

Post pictures of your ripped bag and we might be able to help. Have you tried taking it to a leather repair shop? The expertise of leather repair shops varies greatly but once in a while you can find a great one.

Thank you Whateve. I don't have any spray cleaner, no rinse required so a dunk will be pretty easy. I hope.

I meant to ask what cleaner/conditioner would you recommend for pebbled leather? There's just a few tiny spots I'd like to try and remove before shipping. It's this bag you authenticated for me. I have Leather CPR and Blackrock. Maybe I'll just try a bit of dawn on a microfiber towel and dab at the spots. Then conditioner just to make it look uber new.

And let me tell you, it's a big hunk of a bag. It's going to cost me a fortune mailing it from SW Tx to upper MI.

I like to use Blackrocks for pebbled leather. Just make sure to buff it so you don't get any residue in the valleys. Blackrocks is also a cleaner so you might not need to clean those spots separately. If they don't come off with conditioner, it is likely they won't come off at all. You could try dawn. Otherwise, you could try to hide them with paint but only if you can get a perfect match and use a light touch.

Thanks for the response whateve. Oh no!! I did a board search for what to buff with and someone said to use a nail brush! I think I will stay away from brushes completely then. I was originally using a soft worn shirt. Should I go back to that or use a towel?

The ripped bag is a nylon bag, and looks like this:

I will post a picture when I can. Thanks for your help in advance!

Sounds good. The small spots are hardly noticeable anyway so I'm not going as far as using paint. That's one thing I've yet to try.

As always, thanks for your help.

A soft shirt or towel is fine. I often use paper towels, especially with Blackrocks. At the end, I'll use a brush with soft bristles. The one I have is horsehair and was made for shoes.

I think you must have misread the nail brush suggestion. Many of us use a nail brush for suede or nubuck.

I have no idea how to fix a nylon bag where it wouldn't show. My best suggestion is to use iron-on material. They make iron-on interfacing you could cut to size. If you can slip it inside the rip, then iron over it, it would probably be the least noticeable.

You're welcome! I'm sure your friend will love it.

I doubt they will fix it with their new repair policy. They might not even accept it since it is over a year old. In the past, hardware was guaranteed for life, but they still needed to have the part in stock in order to fix it.

I just wanted to add a comment regarding the new repair policy.

I don't know if I just happened to be in contact with a Coach CS Rep having a bad day, or actually this is happening.

I requested a hang tag in January and got it after about a month, OK no complains.
I requested another in May, that never got to me and I later was told that it was shipped to the wrong address and another would be sent. This one never got to me either, so when I asked knowing the limit is 3, and I still wouldn't be over with the one they re sent because of their mistake, I was told that replacement hang tags are supplied only for bags purchased on Coach stores or Coach.com and that proof of purchase would be required in the future if I request more, because of the demand for tags intended to be used to resale their items.

Just passing the info along.

That's a shame. Ebay changed their rules allowing the sale of hangtags, so the resellers must have flocked to the stores demanding hangtags.

I need your expert advice ladies.

A friend found this Parker Kisslock at a Thrift store, how this poor bag (in a color I really like), could be helped?

Looks like the color has rubbed off in some places, leaving the color red instead. Other than that there are no issues with the bag, only a bit of cleaning inside. Any advice? I was thinking using the acrylic paint with conditioner, but it won't be easy to match the color and apply only to the spots and not the areas next to them, many of them....

TIA

I didn't know that Ebay changed the rule about the hang tags, I always have seen them, reported them and were never removed, so I stopped.

Yes, that's a shame because there are many Vintage Coach lovers, that would like to find a tag to have the complete look for their bags, so now for Vintage it will be impossible unless you pay perhaps in some cases, just as much for the tag to a seller in Ebay, I have seen some outrageous prices at times.

I would use Leather Refinisher. You might have to get a couple colors and mix them. The sample bottles would be enough. Dab it on on the places where it is needed. It covers better than paint and has a better sheen.
