Thanks for your reply Whateve! You give me hope :smile1:
Yes, my purse is just like the one in the link. I will go to a Dollar Store and find one of those cleaners to try first. The acrylic paint I guess will be last option. I have tried the paint on another bags (according to the instructions from this thread) with very good results, but I feel apprehensive with metallic, is not only to match the color, but the shine, etc...
Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area. I've never had anything with exactly this same leather. I have a sparkle leather Poppy but it's different. It's impossible to clean! The Groovy I was able to remove ink from was just regular crinkle patent.

Does anyone here have any experience rehabbing a bone/cream/ivory colored vintage bag? I recently got a bone (or cream or ivory, I'm not sure which the official color would be) convertible clutch that is in good condition, but somewhat dirty. I gave it a bath and some coats of Cadillac and Apple, but it's still a bit on the dingy side. I can tell because the hang tag and the panels beneath the front flap are still a few shades lighter than the flap and strap. I know borax has been suggested here before, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips on de-dingyfying (my new word) a lighter colored leather.

Also, while overall the bag is in good condition, the edges have a kind of yellowish tinge which I'm not sure if it is grime or just rub wear. I'd be much obliged for any suggestions!

I'm not expecting miracles, but I would like to do something to this piping to prevent it from getting worse. Too far gone for leather filler? The other side isn't quite as bad as this.

Bone, white, ivory is hard. You've probably done all you can, but it might be worth givng it a bath in borax.

I think so. You could just glue it down with leather cement and then paint over it. I'd salvage some piping from another bag and sew it over.

I have finally caught up with these threads! What wonderful information and I love the transformation pictures. I have a couple that aren't that dramatic, but I'm still proud of them. Here is a Court. It was in pretty good shape to begin with (it was filthy inside), I bathed it, conditioned it (Leather CPR), two rounds of Obenauf's LP and two of Blackrocks and lots of buffing.

Here is an old NYC swagger (I think). She still has some stains in her pockets that I could not scrub out, but is still much improved. This one is never going to be perfect. I have been carrying her to work this week. I with she was a tiny bit bigger, but overall I love this one.

well, after possibly accidentally pissing off someone on the authentication board, i come seeking more advise. has anyone ever dunked a gathered purse? i don't want to lose the 'gathers' haha. but i have a thing with needing to clean second hand items (OCD) so i hope someone knows if it's okay.

thanks all, i appreciate your help!

I don't think you pissed anyone off!

I don't think this is the same as the gathered leather on Madison Sophia. This looks more like an embossed pattern. I think heat might relax it. Recent Coach items don't seem to be dyed all the way through and any agitation might remove the color. I've never dunked anything like this and I wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't necessary. You can pull out the lining to clean it. You can wet it and use a mild detergent to scrub if necessary. Then I would clean the exterior with a mild spray cleaner. If you really have to dunk, use cool water and minimize agitation.

Looks great!

Holy cats. Have any of you read this forum?

I stumbled upon it while searching for piping repairs. Granted, he recommends all Leather Doctor products, which I know nothing about, but interesting nonetheless.

Wow! He obviously owns the patent! Very technical. There's a lot to trawl through there. Did you find your answer to the piping question? Does he make Leather Doctor Spray On Piping?

What I do for gathered and pleated bags is run water over them in the shower (the sink sprayer takes up a hand on my sink) just enough to clean out the cracks (I once had one with sand and dog hair in the cracks; eww) and dry them off quickly. Then I turn the lining inside out and wash it outside of the bag. I'm afraid to dunk them and let them sit in water.
