I have a question for you seasoned rehabbers. I have dunked an old coach classic bag with good results. Is it also safe to dunk a newer bag, around 2002? It has the c's lining. I wasn't sure if everything will dry with a fabric lining over the leather.

Forgot to mention, the bag is red. Does that cause any issues?

Thanks in advance!

I wash everything, Coach and non-Coach, vintage and contemporary. Can you pull the lining out? If so you can hang it up by the lining until it stops dripping then stuff it with towels to re-shape. If not, it will dry eventually with towels inside, probably quicker than unlined because the leather is thinner. It shouldn't bleed. Vintage red bags do, a lot, but one from 2002 should be OK. Don't have the water too hot.

Thanks you so much. I have learned a lot from this thread.

I've washed some lined bags. Sometimes the creeds swell up and become harder to read. I use a hairdryer on them after the bath, rather than waiting for them to dry naturally; otherwise sometimes they become difficult to read. After the bag, keep the lining pulled out until it is mostly dry, then put it back in and stuff the bag to the shape you want. It is possible that the lining might end up pink tinted if you can't pull it out.

Thank you, good to know about the creed. I believe I can pull the lining out.

I just bought a Sonoma nubuc which is 1) bent out of shape from storage and 2)noticeably faded in an uneven sort of way so needs redyeing.

First - to re-shape, is it safe to dunk, wash?

Second - to redye -anyone succeed in DIY? or got good results sending it to be professionally re-dyed? If I do it myself, it's probably going to be done darker and probably not on this bag. I'll be testing a few brands of specifically suede dyes, dab on and sprays.

In dunking or re-dyeing I'm trying to not ruin the nubuck texture. And hopefully get an even result.

I have dunked number of Sonoma Nubuc bags with good results and used dye to touch up small areas. I believe whateve has used RIT dye with good outcomes.

I think I would use RIT. I've used Fiebings suede dye once on a suede, not a nubuc, bag. It looked perfect until I brushed the suede. Then it seemed like it brushed right off. I used the entire bottle, giving it three coats, and it happened after every coat, even when I let it dry for a week before brushing. So I switched to painting it with RIT dye, which worked much better. You can either dunk or paint it on. I don't know which method will give you more even results.

I bought a Sonoma that had a very uneven color like someone had spilled something on it that partially bleached it. I returned it; I didn't want to attempt rehabbing it.

I may have to get y'all's help later on. Just noticed a little while ago that my NYC British Tan Madison satchel that I bought in mint condition somehow got something black on one side. No idea what it is. There are also some white speckles at the bottom. Clueless as to how they got there.

Guess I'll have to do some rehabbing whether I want to or not! :nogood:

This is my 2nd bag of the 6 rehabs I am working on. Denim Blue suede and leather Soho #1421 bought off Ebay for $17.05 plus S&H. It needed to be cleaned, had some tarnish on hardware, and was missing hang tag (which Coach nicely replaced with matching metal one). If there is anything else you think I need to fix please let me know. :D

Hi, I just bought this same bag from Ebay and it's filthy. Could you detail what you did to clean it up so well? It's beautiful!

I would be very worried that it is mold. Does it smell?

No. It's been in my closet since the end of November when I switched out to my Copley. I wiped it down last night with a damp cloth and got the white speckles off. There are a couple of sizable black marks left, one on the side and one on the bottom. They look kinda like smudge streaking across a bit ... maybe an inch long?

You haven't done anything to the bag to get it dirty and you live in a humid environment, so mold was the first thing to come to mind. One time I washed a bag, then we had a power failure. It was the middle of the summer with 100+ temperatures. I left the bag stuffed with a towel and we stayed at a hotel for the night. When I returned the following day, the bag was covered with mold.
hi, has anyone wash grainy leather? if so, how did it came out? and what did you use to clean etc? thanks!!!
I don't know what you mean by grainy leather. Do you mean pebbled? Do you mean the current cross-grain?

I don't notice a smell aside from the normal leather smell. If it is mold, how do you remove it?

ETA: I just bought this tres cute handmade Paris-themed bag charm to go on it cos the bag's so plain (the hangtag is missing). I think it'll look fab against the British Tan. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Macaron-Eif...599?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d315df3a7
