I don't know how much a bath would help with odor. Many people have reported that the smell doesn't go away completely from a bath.

I think you can get the same results without a bath. You can pull out the lining and wash that with soap and water. I'm not sure how deep the dye goes through the leather and the leather might lose some color in a bath. You can wipe it with alcohol; some people have used vanilla vodka with good results. You can leave it outside on your patio, out of the sun, for a week. I've gotten the best results by surrounding the bag with bath salts in a sealed plastic bag for a week or two. Others have used activated charcoal, like the kind for aquariums, or baking soda.

Thanks. I never thought of bath salts. I've removed smoke odor by filling the purse with dryer sheets and leaving it shut for about a year but I hate to wait that long. I will try the bath salts.

Hello,

I have a Coach Court bag in RED and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what leather conditioner will be okay to use on the bag? I've read promising reviews for Apple Care, Cadillac Shoe, Boot conditioner and Leather CPR, but the reviews were for darker colored (black, brown, navy, etc) leather bags. I'm worried about darkening the leather among other things.

Also, the bag does NOT warrant a wash, but what can I do to clean the leather on the (outside) bottom of the bag? What are your recommendations on cleaning the surface of the bag? Again, I'm hesitant for fear of destroying the bag because of its lighter leather.

For shining up the brass hardware, I assume Brasso is still the majority's go-to product?

I would love to hear your suggestions, ladies. Please and thank you.

I've rehabbed several red bags. It would help to know what era your court bag is from and how dirty it is. If a bag isn't spotless, I would give it a bath. Usually the color will improve from the rehydration of a bath, rather than fade. Keep in mind that Coach bags used to come with instructions for washing bags, so the leather was meant to be able to survive a bath.

In my opinion, there isn't a leather cleaner that will give the results of a bath. I've never found a leather cleaner that worked well. Many conditioners always clean, so I wouldn't waste my money buying a separate leather cleaner.

I would use my normal conditioners on a red bag; usually Leather CPR and Blackrocks. Blackrocks can darken some but it is temporary. I've never used Apple but it seems to me it is more of a maintenance conditioner, more suitable to keep new bags in new condition. I have Cadillac. I bought it specifically to use on lamb nappa. It darkened it.

Hello, Whateve! :)

The bag in question is actually from a winning on eBay that you helped me authenticate. Link to listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-COACH-C...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557. Correct me if I'm wrong, looking at the creed, this bag was made in 2001 (photo). The seller said the bag has never been used and upon inspecting the unfinished lining of the bag and the cleanliness inside, I would agree so. The bag has no odors, other than the smell of good 'ole leather. Overall, the bag doesn't appear to be dirty or soil-- which is why I was looking to give the surface of the bag a wipe down to just sanitize the bag..and not a full bath (especially for a bag that is "unused".)

There are streaks or splash of dark "stains" (for lack of a better word) of some sort on the bottom of the bag and other areas of the bag. I also noted some stickiness in certain area-- not sure what it is, maybe glue?.

The bag has never been conditioned. Maybe picking up a a bootle of the CPR Leather would do some good, particularly around the area where the top handle is? I'll attach photos of the latter and my other areas of concern on the bag. Please let me know what you think.

I'm having issues attaching more than one photo in a post. I'll have to upload one photo at a time. Sorry! Here is a photo of the "stains" on the bottom of the bag without flash..

Hello everyone. I have almost made it through the first thread and am on 250ish of this one. I have done some rehabs (forest green station, black/brown satchel, burgundy soft satchel, baxter satchel, and a red geometric). Today I am working on a black court, a pebbled black small tote and a tan NYC swagger (I think). I want to share my Red Geo Saga. I basically ruined her during rehab and ended up dyeing her burgundy. I'm happy with the results and thought I would share. She was pretty rough when I got her, but not too bad. Here are two pictures after I first soaked her. The black marks are a lot worse than before the bath/Leather CPR.

So I decided I would try dyeing her since I couldn't carry her as is. I got the bright idea to try to sand some of the spots since I was going to dye her anyway. This was a mistake. The dye did not take well to the sanded areas. I think I would have been better off not sanding, but live and learn. Here are two pictures after I sanded the bejesus out of her.

I bought burgundy and red Feibrings dye, but thought the red was too brassy, so I went with the burgundy. I used over half a bottle trying to get the color even. I think due to the sanding. Here are a couple of pictures after the dye.

I'm sorry if these pictures are giant and for the mess on my island. We are in the midst of trying to get our house ready to sale and have been painting etc. Ok. So I gave up on trying to cover the rough spots. I used some Obenauf's Oil because I figured the poor thing needed some help and had been through an ordeal. I then followed up with a couple of coats of Obenauf's wax. I had quite a lot of color loss. I sealed it with Feibring's resolene and put a couple more coats of blackrocks on her. I think she looks great. She is shiny. She looks better than in the pictures but here are a few pictures.

In my opinion, there are a lot of marks for a bag that is supposedly new. I think the seller was dishonest to not disclose them in the listing.

Personally, I would dunk the bag. If you've never dunked, I can see how you would be afraid of it, but I've washed several bags with the same leather and they came out fine. I have no idea what those stains are. They could be water stains, in which case I don't think there is any way to remove them other than with a bath. A bath would also get rid of the stickiness. A bag made in 2001 is likely to be fairly colorfast, but even if it isn't, I've never had a bag lose so much dye that it ended up faded. I've washed bags from the same plant and year.

As pretty as it is now, it would be even prettier with a bath. The leather will plump up, and the conditioner you use will hold that moisture into the leather. It's similar to how when you use moisturizer on your skin right after a shower when your skin is still damp, it works so much better. I would use 2 or 3 coats of Leather CPR, starting when the bag is nearly dry. I would recommend using Blackrocks as the last coat, as it would provide some stain and water protection.

I forgot to respond to your question about the brass. The brass is just plated and when it was new, it had a protective coating. If the brass is shiny, you should leave it alone. Any polishing you do will remove the protective coating.
