do not start out with a white bag. very hard to rehab. especially if, like me, you didn't know what you were doing.

dying a bag is harder than you'd think. start by staying close to the bag's original color, if you can. (it's really like coloring your hair--if you're a newbie, stick close to what nature gave you...)

I'll second that one. In fact steer clear of white or bone bags altogether unless they have very few signs of wear.

Don't spray undiluted Soilove on a suede bag. (It bleached it!)

Don't sand a bag all over trying to get rid of stains

(You'll never get back the original texture)

Don't use too much paint and especially don't use too much paint that doesn't match

(You'll never be able to get it off to start over.)

Bonnie Cashin bag in progress. Looking better just out of the bath. Getting treated right now for lingering musty smell. Leather feels like cardboard though, even after conditioning with leather honey. Maybe another coat? Or two? (Before photo and drying after her bath. Color has greatly improved!)

Gorgeous colour! Do you have Obenauf's? It's great for really dry leather.

I have a Kristin graphic op art hobo. It was my first coach purse. The purse is in desperate need of a cleaning but I'm not sure how to clean it since it is a fabric purse with sequins. The satin lining could also use some cleaning as well. There are a few ink and makeup stains. The purse is dingy looking but it's my fave bag so I use it all the time. Any suggestions for cleaning the bag would be greatly appreciated

OO! Here's what Debi suggested to me for my musty Saddlery bag:
Brush the inside seams with bleach. Dunk, reshape, dry.
Get Leather Rejuvenator and apply according to the instructions (I found it listed as "Leatherique Rejuvenator" on Amazon.)
Wrap it in a plastic bag to allow the bag to absorb all the rejuvenator. (This helps with the dryness of the leather.)
Then apply Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner to help inhibit mold and mildew.
Unfortunately I haven't done this yet so I can't speak to how well it works, but I totally trust Debi's recommendation. The rejuvenator arrived today so I'm probably going to apply it soon. And the other downfall is the products are not cheap, but hopefully last awhile since I'm not planning on dealing with musty, moldy bags any more than I have to.

I think it looks great. Keep in mind that the leather is different than Coach leather.

Yes, I would put it back in warm water, maybe close to the hot side if it is something that won't fade.

Thank for the input ladies. I guess I am going to be hard case, gosh! I did dunk it and it looked better, then I should have come and read more of the DO NOT!
I overstuffed it, yep! Now is a mess and I guess I will have to give it another bath, but I am not giving up, no Sir no way!

(I read the rest of the Do not...)

Help! so I have this bag that has this pen mark and I know you can't get pen marks out of leather, but after talking to a few people they said that you can get old blue ink out of leather. So I tried that and it back fired. I now have a ring around the ink and it is a little discolored. I don't care about the ink now, I just want the ring gone and the light spot blended as good as it can. How do I do that? I was using alcohol when this happened. Here is a picture of what it was like yesterday. What do you think? I would prefer not to use dye if absolutely possible. This spot is underneath the flap so it doesn't show (except to me!) I tried wetting it with a Q tip and that made the second ring!! Please help!!

JaNan16 recommended zit cream here, so you could try that to see if it will fade the pen mark, though from what I've heard about weather in most of the US at the moment there's no sun to help the process.

After that, you'll need to dunk the bag and scrub a little around the stain to try to even it out then stuff and condition. Once you've done that you can assess it and see if you need some paint to cover the lightened area.

I am worried about dunking it because there are pen marks in other places and I don't want them to bleed. Do you think I should be ok? Ha the weather is horrible here! So cold! I guess I could always put it under a lamp or something! Please let me know!

If this is a really old bag, dyed through, you can use a tiny piece of nail file paper and sand off the ink line. Use the fine not the rough paper. A swipe of dye prep or spit will help even out the color. Then a little cleaner/conditioner and lots of buffing. Blackrocks or Obenaufs over the area and more buffing until the color blends. Will take more than one application and buffing to blend the color, over a week or two.

Got great results on a taupe basic bag and a putty portfolio.
