It is a musty smell; more like the old-storage smell rather than wet basement. Curious, however, what treatment have you been using?
Thanks!
There are several options for just musty "old basement." You could put it in an enclosed container with a little container of baking soda, activated charcoal and/or epsom salts. Choose one or a combination and wait at least a week.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to do more than that. I can let you know what to do then, but it's a little pricey and I haven't done it myself yet. (I just got instructions on how to do it this weekend and have the products on the way.)

The wear on the bag itself is going to be a pain like Two.Time said. If you add paint to conditioner, you have to match the paint very closely or it'll show. (Try a pea size amount of paint to about a teaspoon of conditioner and mix it together.)

Thanks again for your help!
On further "smell test" I think it is actually moth balls! I've done some research on that and have a few options to try: storing with dryer sheets; activated charcoal; apparently heat and air are successful. Unfortunately it is winter with 30 degree temps out and snow/rain here in MD so setting the bag out on a warm, sunny day isn't an option!

Oh, moth balls? That's no big deal. Dunk it in some soapy water to get started. Then just rinse and stuff it with paper towels or towels you don't care about to help reshape it. Then condition it (I personally like Leather CPR which can be found in Marshalls with the home cleaning supplies for about $7.)

I understand the issues with weather too--I'm close to Baltimore myself and hate this weather but at least we're not in New York or Boston! Putting it outside works SO well but this time of year it's not worth even thinking about. Other times of the year it works amazingly well. I put a fuzzy moldy bag outside and it took maybe a day or so for it to be killed off.

Will do that, thanks again!

Finally got up the nerve to try the zit cream on a Coach. I don't have very much invested in it. This is a Bleeker Tatersall Hobo:

Here is that red ink that I am working on, this is after three sunbaths (not on a Coach):

So another trip outside.

Has anyone tried this yet with any results?

Do the stained ink spots stay white from the bleach or do they stay the color of the leather? Do they go away? I got an apple green duffle sac, the color is beautful but unfortunately it's got inkstains on the outside. I still haven't figured out how inkstains get on the outside of a bag, lol

The zit cream contains bleaching agents?

Yes, it contains benzoyl peroxide. The one I use is 10%. I wouldn't recommend using it on colors without testing on an inside spot. I have had success using it on white and cream colored leathers with blue ball point and black marker inks. I apply it with a wooden toothpick so I can get really skinny lines.

I have applied it to patent leather. I took a couple of pictures. I will show it next.

My first rehab and I need rescue. After I gathered conditioners, cleaners, brushes, etc.. and reading pages and pages in this thread, I thought I was ready, sure right! I just made a stupid mistake

I gave my bag (leather) a bath with warm water and a bit of Dawn, and "clever me" put a heavy mug on it to keep it down, so now I got it out and I have an indentation in the shape of a ring in the middle of it, where there was nothing before. I stuffed it real good but the mark is not going anywhere. What do I do? Do I put in in water again before it dries out?

Please HELP!

Yes, I would put it back in warm water, maybe close to the hot side if it is something that won't fade.

I agree with whateve. While its in the water, massage the indented area. Hopefully it will smooth it out.

We should start a "Dumb Things Not to Do When Rehabbing" thread. I'm sure we have all made some silly mistakes as part of the learning process. I know I have. :smash:

Post #1: Do not drop undiluted OxyClean powder on wet vachetta.

Post # 2 Do not overstuff with towels while it is drying.

When I first started rehabbing, I had a vintage new york thin bag and it was flatter than a pancake. I dunked and stuffed it to death. When it dried, it was deformed and it looked like an overstuffed sausage, I tried redunking and not putting so many microfiber towels but it never got back the way it was supposed to look like. I gave it to my cousin, who loves it lol
