Wow! Thank you so much for this! Do you know how long they made the Slim Satchel? I thought the last iteration was in the late 80s, but of course, I could certainly be wrong. And that doesn't mean the colors didn't change between the early and late 80s too.

I love to geek out over all things vintage Coach. Lol. Thanks for helping me do just that!
You're welcome. I don't remember ever seeing a slim satchel with a style number in the creed but I have seen a slim satchel compact (9425) made in 1995 so it is possible. If yours has a made in the United States creed with a unique serial number, it could have been made up to 1994.

People have. The leather is different, thinner, than on purses. Personally I haven't had good luck in dunking but some people have. I feel the leather is so thin that it doesn't plump up from a dunk like it does on a purse, and the card slots and pockets get rumpled. It is hard to get everything flat and smooth again if you dunk. I would clean and condition. I had problems with one wallet that ended up showing a swirly pattern from the conditioner application. I never could get that to go away but it did fade some so it wasn't as noticeable.
Thank you for the feedback! I will try to clean and condition without dunking/soaking.

I do remember seeing the Slim Satchel offered as a catalog exclusive at some point in the 90’s, which would suggest it wasn’t made continuously. If you have the patience to scroll through the catalog photos in the Reference Library sub forum, that should help give you an idea of when continuous production ended.
Hi everyone, I miss being here regularly to chat but I usually do a little reading here every few night to see what peops here are up to! I will only have time to do a little maintenance on a few bags. My BT Carrier Brief has been in use for a few weeks so it needs a little TLC and I need to rotate it out. I have been calling it my Jumbo Pony haha. The leather on it is fabulous.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a jewelry dip? What brand do you use? This keychain looks so much better!
It has a little tray in a jar of liquid. And you set your jewelry in there. Soak it for a bit scrub it (brush included) and rinse it. Sparkly. I use it for rings, necklaces, etc. They sell it on Amazon. :)

Please help. A friend bought a bag on eBay. I think she said it’s a Taft (I haven’t seen it). She has dunked it and said as it’s drying she is noticing a sting almost perfume smell. She thinks maybe the woman fabreezed the bag. i have been lucky to not have to deal with smelly bags so I don’t know what to tell her. What is the best way to get odor out of a bag?

ETA - I did a search here and it looks like charcoal is the popular choice for bad smelling bags.

I got a black Dinky not too long ago in a fairly good shape while I was out thrifting. It was $35 behind a bunch of bags. So much for trying to curate my collection of vintage Coach purses, that's just not happening at this rate. This is my fourth rehab and the first Coach bag with a hangtag that I own!

I didn't think I'd already post about another rehab, I think it may be the last one for the year... that said, I've been finding a lot of Coach bags at different thrift stores lately, but the prices were sometimes too high for the condition they are in so I don't always get them (especially if I am not that interested in the style).

This is under harsh and white dining room light (before and after).

I'm not going to post all the photos since it's pretty boring, but one thing I noticed is that the leather was more textured than my other bags; my Scooter and my Pocket Purse specifically are smoother. The back of the Dinky is smoother as well. I think a few hours after a bath, I started to apply Leather CPR--about 6 coats because I wasn't sure how many it needed and how many layers would help with the texture. I also applied 2 coats of Blackrock.

There was some blue glittery spots on the back that I thought was nail polish so I tried to scrape it off, but they actually came off right after a warm bath.

The hardware was pretty rough, it had rust and a lot of verdigris. Removing the hardware is always my least favorite part because I always find it difficult to put it back. I've cleaned it with Bar Keeper's Friend since that's what I have, and I polished it with a polishing cloth.

Here it is in a more natural light (south facing). I've been using it a bit when I want something very light (I can only fit my iPhone 14 Pro max, my card holder and my keys). I quite like it, though I think my Pocket Purse is still my favorite out of all the bags I own.

Is it an NYC Dinky? I have restored a couple; the leather can be textured since it's analine dyed natural hide. I love the texture on it! I just restored one that had lots of grain. They're beautiful, aren't they? Nice restoration, btw! Looks great. :)

Oh that’s interesting! I don’t know if it was, the cred only states it is made in the US.

I do love how the leather can look different on the bags depending on where/when it was made, on top of “having lived”—it gives the bags character.

Thank you. I typically am looking for those bargain thrift vintage, unlined bags and am not spending a lot of money on them but would still hate to ruin one. I have only dunked one lined bag and it is a Madewell bag that I think came out really well. I found the bag on the floor at Goodwill filled with a pringles can and moldy mini doughnuts (I didn’t look to see what else was in there). It had a price tag on it so it wasn’t someone’s lost bag. No way I wasn’t giving that bag a good cleaning! I’m planning on keeping it for now but wonder if it’s like selling a house where there’s been a murder, do you have to disclose things like moldy doughnuts when you resell?
I noticed on some groups, it was a really big deal to know everything someone has done to a bag. Whether it’s been touched up in any way. These bags have lived a whole life before it reaches someone, it’s almost unrealistic to know everything it’s been through. From working in sales, I would say under promise and over deliver. Ask buyers to zoom into photos as they add to the description of the bag and please feel free to ask for more photos/questions before buying. Also with size, sometimes I add a can of Coke for comparison because I can visualise it better. But you’re always going to have people who make a fuss because they want some money back.

I’m too excited not to share. I’m so happy I finally stopped lurking and actually created a login. I feel like I finally found my people.

I did a little mini-rehab on this Lula’s Legacy bag and I need to tell someone (anyone) who will appreciate the final outcome.

There is this weirdly separated buckle strap area though… any recommendations on how to fix? I was thinking leather glue and tiny binder clips.

Even little puffy buckle holder weirdness aside - I LOVE HER!

Excellent advice. I like the "under promise and over deliver" especially.

I used a sock filled with used coffee grounds, tied in a pillowcase with a smelly bag and left to sit for a really long time. :)
