My Shopping Bag tote, pre-reg # and Carrier, 1990-ish, both have a very soft, almost velvety feel to the surface of the leather, with no gleam, so to speak. In fact, I an holding off on using conditioner on the Shopping bag. I did condition the flap somewhat of the Carrier, and the leather looks great, but lost some of the velvety feel. Which I believe may be a combo of the hide, age and in the Carrier’s case wear. The SB was minimally used and well stored.
I looked at the listing of your bag and Creed pic. I don’t believe it’s suede. Just very thirsty! And I think it will be gorgeous after conditioning … other opinions are welcome.
That's a very good description, velvety and no gleam. In my admittedly limited experience with suede, you can rub your finger on it and it changes the way it looks. You can make a lighter streak by running your finger on it. And reverse the movement and it goes back to the original color. This bag is doing that!

A pretty straightforward rehab today, with only one area of concern. The creed on this janice was pretty light, so I needed to be careful if I dunked it. It was squashed and dry and I felt like it needed the dunk. I did a very short dunk, about 8 minutes, and kept the creed side up out of the water and just splashed water up on that side to minimize water absorption by the creed.

The reason I was asking about this bag is that I want to handle the rehab in the right way. I've come down on the side of it's not suede. But it is very soft and velvety feeling. I think I'll rehab it in my regular way with the leather cpr. Sharing some more photos. That backside leather of the inner pocket must be some of those natural scars they talk about. That cow was abused.

Yeah, that's not suede, just THIRSTY. Are you dunking it? I've rehabbed one of those once. Turned out beautifully... Until my f#@!ing cat scratched it. But that's life, eh?

Hi, knowledgable peeps. I got this bag today, and I think it's SUEDE on the outside. I didn't know that from the seller's pictures or description. I sort of remember (not well) a recent discussion about a "rough out" bag. That's more rare, right? If it is suede, you wouldn't dunk it like a regular vintage bag, or would you? This has already been authenticated on the authenticate forum and placed in mid-70's. Pre-serial number. I LOVE this bag, and I got a good deal on it. ETA: The suede is on the front and back, but not the sides or bottom.

Beautiful bag! What a great find!

It looks beautiful! I’m actually working on the same color/ style purse right now. I hope it turns out as nicely.
Thank you! If I could get this bag back to life, without a clue as to what I’m doing, I’m sure yours will be great! I have another tough one I’m working on and every time I look at it I think, “I wish you could tell me what happened to you”

Hello rehabbers!

Looking for some advice here. I picked up this City bag at the goodwill. The bag is from 1997 and the structural integrity is amazing - very little sign of usage - zero scratches etc.

Here’s the problem with the bag. There are signs of mildew from a long time ago. There is zero moldy smell.

I’m hoping a soapy vinegar soak will take care of any residual infection and a gentle scrub will remove the old mildew stains. Any advice on this process will be gratefully accepted.

There is another issue - the turnlock has vertigre so I think I need to remove it to properly remediate. I’ve never removed hardware before so I’m a bit nervous. Also not sure when to do it. Should I remove the turnlock and soak/clean the bag without it? Or should soak/clean the bag with the turnlock in place? What’s my order of operations here? Am I overthinking this?

Thanx in advance for your thoughts.

Take off the hardware first. Get the bag into a vinegar bath ASAP, just in case that mold is still active.
