That looks like a good challenge but I bet it will rehab beautifully. I’ll be interested to see it when it’s done! I just found one that looks to be the same style but in camel (I think) and I am just getting ready to dig in. I am very new at this whole bag rehab thing I’ve learned a lot from everyone here but I know I can will only learn by doing. I’ve tried some things that I’m too ashamed to share here . Someone more experienced would have gotten a better result but I’ve found these bags to be pretty forgiving.

Look forward to seeing your end product.

And don't be afraid to show us all your results. We have all had failures...I now call it Character building for the bag....and I've had a few.

Hello! Does anyone know how to remove this discoloration on brass hardware? It's not sticky. I've tried Brasso and jewelry polishing cloths to no avail. Thank you!

I’ve been using barkeepers friend and jewelry polishing pads which was ok but not quite there so today I used goof off with a q-tip and then a nail buffer and it really seemed to get the last of it off and made it shine.

I shared some photos of this bag already. It is my first really challenging bag. The before is actually after it had been dunked the first time. We’ve been through quite a journey this bag and I but I think I’m finally happy with how it turned out.

It looks beautiful! I’m actually working on the same color/ style purse right now. I hope it turns out as nicely.

Hi, knowledgable peeps. I got this bag today, and I think it's SUEDE on the outside. I didn't know that from the seller's pictures or description. I sort of remember (not well) a recent discussion about a "rough out" bag. That's more rare, right? If it is suede, you wouldn't dunk it like a regular vintage bag, or would you? This has already been authenticated on the authenticate forum and placed in mid-70's. Pre-serial number. I LOVE this bag, and I got a good deal on it. ETA: The suede is on the front and back, but not the sides or bottom.

If it is suede on the outside, then it should be smooth leather on the inside. I have this bag. It is pre-creed and has a paper clip type zipper pull attachment. You can rehab just like any bag but you would only put conditioner on the smooth leather. The suede can be brushed with a suede brush, a nail brush, or a fine sanding block. It looks like someone tried to lighten up the handles already.

Do you mind sharing how much you paid?

Coach spelled it "Ruff-Out."

It's suede on the inside, too. Maybe I'm wrong and it's not suede exterior? Not sure. My husband felt the bag exterior and said: suede. When I move my finger over the surface, it makes different highlights (if I'm describing that right). I paid $100. ETA: and yes, on the paper clip type zipper pull. The bag came with a brown dust bag (also not in the description) so I think it has been well protected. I can take more photos!

Early Coach suede is pretty coarse, equivalent to the suede interiors of unlined bags. It can get worn down so much that it becomes almost smooth again, even becoming shiny in parts. The inside on a ruff-out would be smooth leather. It could have been smooth leather at one time and got so worn out that the finish was worn out enough that it would feel like suede, and have a nap that you could move with your finger. I accidentally did that once to a bag with aggressive cleaning.

Does it feel like suede everywhere, including on the sides of the bag?

In your picture it doesn't look as coarse as my bag, but then mine has been brushed. I think it is amazing that the brass on yours and mine looks so good.

I think I'm going bonkers. The sides and bottom are definitely NOT suede. The inside is definitely NOT smooth leather. The back panel...I don't know. But the front panel, so soft. It's not a coarse feel, it's really soft. A completely different feel than the other parts of the bag. I've handled a lot of vintage coach and I've never felt leather like this. (It's nice, whatever it is!)

Tomorrow I'm going to carry it out into the sunlight and take a bunch of photos.

My Shopping Bag tote, pre-reg # and Carrier, 1990-ish, both have a very soft, almost velvety feel to the surface of the leather, with no gleam, so to speak. In fact, I an holding off on using conditioner on the Shopping bag. I did condition the flap somewhat of the Carrier, and the leather looks great, but lost some of the velvety feel. Which I believe may be a combo of the hide, age and in the Carrier’s case wear. The SB was minimally used and well stored.
I looked at the listing of your bag and Creed pic. I don’t believe it’s suede. Just very thirsty! And I think it will be gorgeous after conditioning … other opinions are welcome.
