Unfortunately the black sidepack was $50 which I think is just an okay price, not a steal. It has tons of verdigris around the hardware. I also have a larger sidepack in red which was more of a steal, can't remember if it was $20 or $30.

Unfortunately I just discovered the Devon I bought thinking was burgandy is just red and covered in paint. Just starting to strip it..scared what might be underneath!!!
Any red in good shape for $20 or $30 is a steal. But a larger Sidepack? Bingo!
I don't mind something a little beat up for cheap. Maybe I will get lucky at the flea market. But I won't be going there for a while.
A painted bag, ughh ...

This is my rehab of a vintage Coach that I purchased last week from a woman in my community, age 64 who told me she bought the bag new, at Coach in the Hamptons when she was a teen. I have never purchased a vintage bag in this bad of condition. I have about eight Coach bags now, I prefer the US made unlined leather, so I suppose, the Vintage styles. I had a feeling it was something special. I inquired about authenticity, and was told on the other Coach forum it was indeed the real thing. I have identified it as a Courier bag, I believe it is the large. The woman said she thinks it was 1975-76 when she bought it. So here are the before, during drying and after 6-7 coats of CPR. There is some damage to the leather on the top and strap, aging I believe, but, heck we all wrinkle with age. I bought her the Coach New York key chain to celebrate her new start in life. If anyone has any suggestions how to improve my rehab, I welcome them. Thanks
LOVE IT! Thank you so much for updating!

I don't think I ever caught up with you on this small Courier but, wow :panic: ! I saw that listing too and really thought about making an offer, but I really couldn't pull the trigger based on pics. I am just speechless, and lol jelly, about how fabulous it came out. And you have that camel Courier too! Wow.
There are two rust Couriers ... neither cheap. I'd really like to feel the leather before spending that much $$.
I am getting caught up with other things in life, so I can get on my rehabbing on, which I have woefully let slide.
You have no idea how much this post means to me. Thank you. So so much.

NOOOOOO! Oh, I hate that bait and switch. Been there.

I am sorry.

Absolutely stunning! Love it! How did you prep the bag for dye? How did you dye the strap with hardware still attached? It’s easy to remove bag hardware. Just curious. I have a camel bag I picked up for my sister and the handles are really stained from use. This might be a fun project to dye it.
Oh boy.. I am still learning on this project. What I do know is that the ivory/beige/chalk/white leathers absolutely refuse to dye nicely. It's been a journey over the past week. I actually had a temper tantrum like a two year old over a ivory soho bucket crossbody yesterday. Well, not quite a temper tantrum but I was quite frustrated.

The dye works beautifully on BT's. I haven't found an inexpensive tester in camel, putty, taupe, etc.

Anyway..
Deglazer is key. I use denatured alcohol. Any type of deglazer with Acetone will affect this dye adversely.
The bag must be wet before dipping into the dye
Dye to water to vinegar ratio must be precise. There's math involved if you want "complex" colors - like mixing the dye. It's a powder.

Thanks for all the details! I’m not there yet, but will look up all these posts when I am.

Actually it was my own fault.. I really need glasses! I bought it in person but I just didn't look closely enough at it. I was just excited to see it! The price was decent and I think I have mostly got the gunk off it. Its drying.I don't know if it was shoe polish or paint but it was really hard to get off as I could see it because it was a shade or 2 darker than the bag. It looked really a bit splotchy before the bath. Hopefully conditioner will even up the color.

Also I had to strip back shoe polish off the sidepack. Overall I have inhaled a lot of acetone today!

At least Acetone is organic!

Don’t laugh, I have discovered having face masks handy is great for housecleaning and a few random projects!

Thanks I will look in to Renapur, I have never used it before! I am often in awe of the wonderful rehabs I see posted here, I'm such a newbie. BTW, I texted J, the woman I got the bag from, and sent her the photos of her old bag. She was just thrilled she has a new home and a new beginning. Thanks for the advice.
I prefer BR. I had a meltdown at the airport on my way back from California because I wasn't allowed to bring a mega tub of it back to the UK and had to throw it away. I would rather pay up for it over using UK made Renapur LOL!
I use surgical masks for a variety chores now. Including, but not limited to, litter box cleaning, dicing onions, hand-polishing hardware with 0000 steel wool etc! Very useful!!!
Me too!
