Good morning,
Any suggestions that I might get this big stain off. Do you think a bath will help?
No ideas what caused it, seller said it has been stored in cupboard for year.

Many thanks in advance ☺

I've had stains disappear after a bath, it's worth a try and happily it is on the back. Washing and conditioning sometimes help to minimize even persistent stains because it tends to even out the color a bit.

It appears to me the pipping need to be replaced, most pro cobbler should have proper leather and a good machine stitcher, it is a simple job for them, and won’t weaken the leather, at least not enough to make any difference. For the length of strap, hand stitching is a bit work and not necessary. I hand stitched the Casey back using the existing holes, because only partial stitching were removed, I was using the same pipping leather, it was easier since all the holes already lined up.

Just a follow up on the badly cracked piping issue. I took the bag and strap to my cobbler today. What a gem. He brought out bolts of leather and gave me options for replacement. I will reveal the final product when I get it back. You can't rush a master.

I thought this one point would interest rehabbers: based on the age of the bag, and products available more or less at the time it was new, he thought that the cracking may have been due to use of mink oil. If it were put onto the bag just once or twice, it will dry out the bag over the time and the cracks will result. Apparently it works best and preserves the leather only with repeated use. I don't know exactly what this means for rehabbing but I thought it was interesting.

ETA: I hadn't been to this cobbler since before the pandemic. It was interesting to see shelves of LV bags, Fendis, MCM and other vintage Coach there. He showed me a few pieces and told me what needed to be done for repair. I feel so fortunate that he is ten minutes from my house. Again, if you're in SE PA and looking for a magician, let me know.

I fill a small bowl with one part vinegar & one part water, throw the hardware in & after a few minutes I polish it with #0000 fine steel wool. I keep the hardware wet with the vinegar/water while Im polishing it. Then I rinse with hand soap & warm water. I used to use brasso but it’s awful in my opinion. It turns everything into a weird pale gold colour.

To maintain the shine, just quickly buff with a silver jewelry cloth before carrying the bag
thanks that is great info

A bag so nice, I bought it twice ;)

Purchased both of these in 2018. I got the one on the left first (for $74!!!!!:faint:). It was my first Winnie and I became obsessed! Only flaw was that the color was pretty worn around the piping. But then, not even a WEEK later, the second Winnie appeared!! This one was $135 but it was in MINT condition. (And I actually even hesitated buying it because of the price :roflmfao: <- 2021-me watching 2018-me concerned about Winnie prices).

I asked around to see if the more worn bag could be fixed, but everyone I spoke to said the color was hard to match, until I found a cobbler who said they could paint it.. but then the bag edges came back this weird iridescent greenish color  but my sister didn’t mind and she’s been the owner of the worn Winnie.

Fast forward to now when I actually know how to match periwinkle! Washed the bag (luckily that green stuff came off), painted the piping and now she looks completely new!

Now my sister’s bag looks great and mine is the scoliosis :giggle: I had never dunked my bag because it was in such good shape and I was so scared to ruin it. But now I think I should give it a dunk to help lift her spirits (and her dowel).

I think giving it a bath in Dawn dish soap and scrubbing it with a soft brush and then conditioning it are probably your best options. At least I would start with that and see how the bag responds. See below for before and after pics of the brown Slim Satchel 9425 that I rehabbed. It responded well to a simple bath and conditioning.

Also below are pics of a green Pocket Purse 9755 that I once rehabbed. The bag was in pretty good condition but it had a strong smell like perfume or incense. Again I just gave it a bath and conditioner and the smell disappeared and the bag came out well.

Good luck!

Wow, both of these bags came out gorgeous!!! ❤️ Thank you for the tips!!! I found out from the seller that she actually sprayed the bag with Febreze before shipping. Can you believe that? . I let the bag air in the garage overnight with a satchel of baking soda inside. That helped some with the smell. The bath took care of the rest. I also added vinegar to the water (thank you LadaZuri!).

I hate when seller tries to make the bag look or smell better. I had one seller shoe polish the whole bag right before shipping. I was so mad!
