Looking for some sage advice regarding a Logan I received yesterday.

The seller did not mention or picture an ink stain on the side of the bag, only one on the back; nor did she mention all of the ink/pen marks on the interior of the bag. The spot on the back I wasn’t too worried about because it wouldn’t be very visible when worn, but the spot on the side is.

Interior ink stains:

Every piece of hardware also has verdigris, even the D rings.

Needless to say the bag is in worse condition than I originally thought. For $45 (spent $60 total with tax and shipping), is it worth rehabbing? The verdigris is obviously manageable, but I know ink can really cause some trouble.

Only you can decide if it is worth it. I think with the market the way it is now, even with the ink stains, you got a good price. I doubt you'll be able to clean off either of those ink stains, but I would try bleaching them out so they don't spread. I wouldn't worry about the inside ink much. As long as there aren't any blobs, they aren't going to spread. You could always do a little sanding on the inside suede. That is a bag that is screaming to have the hardware removed for cleaning.

This is the response I was hoping for! Thank you.

Ink stains are something I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid on BT bags until now. But Logans are less common and I do really like the patina this bag has, so I think I’ll try to work with the ink stains and do my best to rehab this bag!

It would be really satisfying if you took before and afters of that hardware!

Were the marks visible before you dunked or did they just show up after? With my red bag I had some spots that were there before I dunked and some that showed up after. I took a dripping wet paper towel with dawn soap and wiped over the areas with the marks and another dripping wet with paper with just water to go over the areas to remove the soapy residue. I kept doing that until the areas were pretty saturated with water and let them dry. They dried in about an hour or two and the spots that appeared after my first dunk went away completely but the spots that were there before the dunk remained but they have lightened. You could probably also try redunking it entirely, but it’ll take a long time to dry fully and I definitely know that anxiety of waiting to see if the spots are gone after a dunk:frown: hope this helps and good luck!

Honestly I don't remember. I should have taken photos probably. I want to say they were not there before. I feel I would have noticed. But also, I may have thought I could get them out with a wash. Either way, I will definitely try to use your method. I really feel like it just needs to be scrubbed again. Everywhere else is fine. It's not mold and it's not ink or wine. I feel like maybe some water or soap residue got stuck there.

FYI; When I first started rehabbing, I had difficulty removing the D rings in my Willis and scratched the brass a bit. I eventually found the perfect tool to remove the D rings for cleaning. In my late dad's tools there was a Craftsman 1/8 flat head screwdriver. Works like a dream! If the D rings are the same sized D rings as those on the Willis, you may wish to try this. Just a suggestion. Looking forward to seeing your Logan rehabbed!

I agree with @whateve, it is a Logan bag, it is harder to find than City, Station, Willis, Court etc, pretty good price even with ink stains. I think some members here used acrylic paint to cover up ink stain before, maybe you can search the forum and find those postings.

The patina on that bag has so much potential, it reminds me of my City bag.

Working on this Stewardess bag, which is about as close to perfect condition already as I’ve seen. I thought the family of CPR items that arrived along with the Leather CPR was cute. A little color came out in the dunking, which I remember happening with virtually every dunking I’ve tried. I didn’t remove any hardware and don’t see any verdigris. The seller had another Stewardess listed last time I checked, so if you are looking for one, check my posts in the Authenticate thread and submit the listing for authentication.

just wanted to give a shout out for some polishing squares that I believe I heard about on Sacs Magnifiques. I found these online on Amazon, called pro-polish polishing pads. They are dry foamy squares impregnated with some kind of cleaner. In the photo, the upper row is untreated and the lower row of grommets has been gently polished. The change is even more striking IRL.

ETA: question on Blackrock. Is it OK that a little bit of color has lifted onto the paper towels I used to wipe off the excess? I dabbed it on the finished side of the leather a section at a time, just a touch every inch or so, spread it around with my fingers, then wiped the excess with a paper towel and let it sink in while I went over the whole bag, which took about 30 minutes, then used a horsehair brush back and forth gently. It feels a little sticky still and I actually prefer the smooth feel it had after the last coat of Leather CPR. I have forgotten these details of rehabbing though I did try Blackrock before.

Yeah - colour does come off. I wait for it to stop being sticky before I buff w/ a super stiff brush. I like it extremely shiny.

eta takes mine a few hours to a day to stop being tacky

Could you specify the correct pro-polish product on Amazon? I am having trouble finding it, thanks!

Here you go: 20 Pro-Polish Polishing Pads https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B3Y5K4I?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I don’t recall the video specifying a particular brand, but this one seemed well-rated and I found the product to be pretty user friendly yesterday. Please let us know what you think if you try it. You are such an experienced person with vintage bag rehabs. I would like to know if you approve of this product!

Thanks! I still have a stash of Cape Cod cloths but I may try these. I am always looking for ways to make it easier to polish metal!
