sooo my red purse that has spots turning black on it - i think i’ve figured it out !
my hone has hard water - and i used unfiltered tap water to dunk my bag !!!
this is the info i found -
The constituents of hard water when it comes into contact with wet leather will react to the tannins in the leather and will eventually result in the leather turning black. The minerals contained in hard water can also cause the leather cleaner you use to clean your leather to build up soap residue.

anyone else run into this issue and figure it out the hard way like me ??
How interesting, and sad! There used to be someone active in this thread who lived in Florida. She collected rain water for her rehabs. I never gave a thought to why until now.

I guess the effects aren't reversible?

Hard water usually contains high volume of magnesium and calcium, maybe iron too. Not sure about the first 2, but iron will react with acid ( tannins is acidic), old school leather workers put rusted iron into white vinegar container to make their own black leather dye. But it take time for the mixture to become usable as dye.
Not sure why some bag will develop dark spots, some won’t.
Another thing need to watch out is leather covered metal kisslock frame, it is usually made of steel, if you dunk it with vinegar, the leather around enclosed kisslock May turned black in the process of drying.
Someone a long time ago used that method to dye their bag. It didn't come out well.

It will work on raw veg tanned leather, that has not conditioned or oiled with anything. Not so much on already oiled or waxed bag leather. There are much better dye choices for that.
I was curious and tossed a handful rusted nails into a half jug full white vinegar 4 months ago, today I dipped a veg tanned leather strip into that solution for about 5 seconds, it dyed the leather jet black. It is actually quite nice, just rinsed off the extra solution, dried it with a paper towel, almost no colour rub off even the leather was still wet .

Just for comparison, I dipped a piece chrome tanned leather that is very oil / wax infused by tannery ( it has a feel similar to very supple glove tanned leather, but has color coating on the leather surface), the color didn’t change at all include suede side, only get wet.
So maybe only work on extreme dry leather with no oil or wax in it.

Quite a few of us have had spots turn up after dunking and I wonder if this is why? Thank you so much for sharing this information! :flowers:

Very cool indeed! Thank you for sharing your experiment! It's so wonderful to have you, and your wealth of knowledge, back with us!!! :flowers:

I decided to go the more experimental route because I’ve already dyed a bag unsuccessfully that I have sworn off dyeing a bag ever again if I can help it. So this time, because my bottle green Court had mold stains that came out after the dunk, I decided to paint the bag instead. I used Angelus exclusively for this project. Angelus leather paint in violet and matte finisher to seal it. I am super happy with the ease of use. It dried super fast after each application, like around 10 minutes per panel. I thinned the paint down with 92 proof alcohol (vodka basically), no real measure, just a few drops at a time until I got the consistency I wanted.

Btw, I also tried Rit dye for 24 hours but did nothing to the bag, except made the inside zip pocket and the inside seams that weren’t dyed properly purple. The leather itself didn’t even budge. So I left some of the interiors unpainted.

Here it is, sans Renapur. I’m still deciding whether or not to Renapur for the waterproof aspect. All told, I spent about $15 on this bag.

It came out great! I can't believe you got such a bright purple over black. I'm using Angelus purple, which doesn't look much darker than your violet over a dark green, and the color is coming out super dark. I've already put on two coats. I didn't thin it though. What is the purpose of thinning it with alcohol? These are water based paints, right? Do you think the alcohol sped the drying process?

I'm not surprised the RIT did nothing to a dark bag.

I thought I’d get a lighter purple or a redder? Purple so I got violet because I thought the Angelus purple was a lot more blue IRL. I already got too many blue bags lol that’s the truth

I’m not sure but I think Angelus is alcohol-based? I wanted to get their 2-thin but it was out of stock in the store when I went, so did some googling and thought why not just thin it like acrylic paints? Some artists thin their acrylics with a mixture of distilled water and ethyl alcohol, too. When I thinned it down, I found it less streaky. It’s like whitewashing so I did several coats until I got the colour I wanted.

We have family visiting so all our extra space is in use...and the kitchen is running full swing. Is it OK to feel sad that I can't do my next bag project? I had to stash two almost-finished bags on a cabinet to make space on the kitchen counter :P

I have been pretty lucky with the projects thus far that the bags were in really good shape to good shape before I started on them.

My dining room table is always covered with my projects.
