Sharing a little rehab fail and seeking guidance - thanks in advance!

I picked up a red version of my favorite wallet (I currently carry this one in navy!) months ago. It was still stiff and felt barely used. I’m more careful now about what I dunk and what I don’t for small leather items...but at the time, on an impulse I threw the red wallet into the sink with some other items and started scrubbing. It bled a lot, but the bigger concern was the discoloring around the kisslock frame as it dried :-/

I’ve dunked kisslock items before and never had this problem - so first question, have others seen staining like this before?

I have red acrylic paint that’s probably a close-enough match if I decide to paint over the stains. But with the amount of action a wallet sees, I’m not sure this will be the best idea to make her pretty again. See the last picture where I painted red over a small section as a test.

Second question - What would you all do? Paint over the stains? Dye the red some darker color all over? Something else?

I would definitely dye it a darker colour. I mean at this point, what do you have to lose? Sorry this happened

I would dye it to a color similiar to the stain or black. I think if the leather color is uneven, dye to a different color( other than black or very dark shades) the uneveness will still show. Here is my 2 dyed court: first bag is a very stained former British Tan dyed to Burgundy, second bag is a very faded Navy dyed with Navy ( but the navy dye color is brighter than coach Navy color). Both used Feibing's pro dye.

They turned out great! @shannastory since you already have the same wallet in navy, maybe you can dye the red one a deep burgundy or mahogany?

Aw I’m so sad to see this  dyeing it a dark colour is probably your best option at this point. Black or navy, Fiebings Pro Dye all the way as per @LunaSilver’s recommendation. Good luck!

Sorry to see this happened, I am curious to know if you used vinegar during the dunk? It just came to my thoughts the stain might be caused by chemical reaction of iron (kisslock inside ) and acid, that is how some leather workers make their diy black dye: vinegar and iron, and baking soda to nuturalize the mixture when ready.

I doubt this will work, but you have nothing to lose. Try using zit cream on the stained areas. Leave it on a few days and put out in the sun if possible. If it happens to lighten it, then you could possibly stick with a red dye. Also, if you really want to dye it red, you might be able to use a light color first on the stained parts so the darkness won't show through when you dye the whole thing.

I have a question for all of you knowledgeable rehabbers. I am in the middle of my own shoe polished/painted mess of a bag. I have never done one of these before so not sure of the next step.
I bought a spectator city bag and had it authenticated here, but it's had lots of work done on it. Little did I know it had also had shoe polish or paint applied. Not sure which. It was shiny and stiffer and had a waxy feel to it, so I used CPR to try and soften it up. I saw some black color come off on the cloth. So I used guardsman leather cleaner, more color on the cloth. I moved up to acetone and lots more color on the cloth.
I figured the bag was trash anyway so I had nowhere to go but up and gave it a good once over with acetone. Sorry I was in a rehab zone and didn't get photos!
Then I dunked it. This is where it gets weird- it turned whitish and slimy in the water. I scrubbed with a microfiber cloth and the water was black. I thought I got all the shoe polish off. Rinsed twice.
Let it dry overnight and put CPR on it twice. I woke up to a still wet bag and still shiny. I got photos of this stage-

Another round of acetone. Finally my question is- do I dunk again and start over or just let it keep drying and continue CPR?

If you have read this far I applaud you!! Thank you!!

That's a shame. I would cry!
I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Thanks, me too :( And...I did, haha. It happened months ago - I was originally going to give this wallet to my wonderful sister-in-law for Christmas before this little debacle. I’ve been working up the courage to post here asking for advice!

But also - I’m a little scared to dunk other kisslock items now, especially light-colored ones. Based on responses so far, I’m really glad others haven’t had this happen!

Cool idea, thanks. I’ll likely try this one first, cause I do like the red...and man I feel guilty for messing up such a nice old red gal!

Thanks so much everyone.

@LunaSilver wow good call. I’m 95% sure I didn’t include vinegar in the bath with this wallet, I’ve only started doing that super recently when I was working my stinkiest bag yet. January maybe? That said...what is time nowadays anyway?? So it’s possible. I definitely had the wallet in the bath with other larger items though - any chance something else from a full-size Coach bag, or my standard dishwashing detergent might have caused a reaction like this? Thanks also for the photos of your lovely dye jobs, you give me hope this might turn out alright.

I’m likely going to try to bleach the stains first, and re-dye red as @whateve suggested. If that doesn’t work, I’ll go darker. I do love burgundy, haha.

Hi guys!

So I recently got a courier pouch, and I was planning on dunking it since it's not smelling great.
However I noticed there's cardboard or something in the flap part, and I was wondering if anybody knows if it's safe to dunk with that part in?

Thanks!

Edit: I went back about a thousand years into this topic and found other people that dunked it with no issues so I just went for it.
It went great!
However the water turned a weird shade of purple pink, and I'm pretty sure my bag is black.
I noticed it had like a purple-y look in the sun though, so is it possible that it's just excess dye or grossness from being old and worn?
I don't think it's painted black since the inner pocket is also black, but the suede part has a very slight purple shade on it too!
Can anyone shed some light on this?

I don’t think CPR’s gonna cut it. It looks like a lot of the dye has come off from the acetone & scrubbing. If I were in your position, Id probably resort to leather dye at this point to even out the leather & make the black look less faded. Other opinions welcome. Wish I could be of more help

eta: out of curiosity, is it a pre 94 city? Acetone made my black court uneven when I removed whatever it was coated in but the colour loss isn’t that bad. My bag is a 2002. I find pre 94 bags are a bit of a challenge to rehab unless they’re already in good condition

Yes it's 90-93 City Spectator bag. I don't mind a bag that is ageing elegantly, just didn't like it when she looked like she had a plastic face on lol! She's only 30 after all! We'll see how she turns out!
