Soooo.....how does one go about rehabbing a Dakota? The suede is lovely and clean but the bag itself is squished. How would I re-shape a structured bag that I can't dunk? I'm about to start searching this thread but figured I'd ask first in case anyone wanted to share their experiences.

I really like this bag! It's bigger than I thought it would be and it's sturdy and rugged and heavy and I love it already. I just need to figure out how to clean it up.

ETA: I received my made in Italy Willis too and it's just a normal, lovely, mahogany Willis. Nothing special. I still prefer Costa Rican leather. I was thinking a made in Italy bag might feel different but it doesn't.
Why not dunk Dakota? I dunked one and it responded to the rehab beautifully. I think I posted it here.

I think I dunked more than one too.
I thought you couldn't dunk pig suede? I dug through some old posts last night before asking and it seemed most people had avoided dunking. I still had several pages to go through when I decided to ask. Well this is good news!! I'm glad to hear I can dunk away.

Have you searched katev’s posts? She has rehabbed/cleaned an extensive variety of bags!

I went through a few pages but I haven't seen anything yet where someone has dunked a Dakota (or pig suede). I hope to have more time this evening to search through old posts. I'm looking forward to getting this bag cleaned up so I can carry it. It's so different from any other bag that I have.

I have never rehabbed a Dakota, but I have dunked quite a few bags that were considered "delicate" but they really needed baths so they got them, and so far I've had pretty good luck. The thread below includes a green Glenwood Sheridan that I dunked and I think that its construction is somewhat similar to the Dakota but it has a cloth lining.

The second bag in the same thread is made with Lamb Nappa leather and was considered delicate but it was so filthy that I finally ran it through the washer and it came out great.

I think that the only pig suede bag I've ever rehabbed was an Italian genuine lizard framed clutch that is lined with pig suede. I didn't have to dunk that bag because it was received in good condition, all I did was brush the lining and it looked nice, see the link below:

But my general rule of thumb is that if I don't feel comfortable carrying the bag because it isn't as clean as I'd like - then I may as well take the chance and dunk it.

Good luck, let us know what you decide to do!

Here is my Dakota post dunk. The black textured leather took the dunk wonderfully. There is a pig suede pocket inside which looks a bit smudged (I think it was off white or very light gray originally), but it did not look too good to begin with, so OK with me.

Gramercys have pig suede lining and I believe you have rehabbed some of those.

Thanks to all of you on this thread I have caught the vintage bug!

Here's my FIRST bag, authenticated by TPF's whatev (thank you!) prior to purchasing!!! It arrived this week and my first exciting/terrifying experience with dunking, removing mould, reshaping and conditioning commenced!

Here she is the day she arrived... in much better shape than I was expecting. Included is a photo of my cat who immediately claimed Abbie's discarded box!
