So I dunked my companion bag today (9300) and to say Im upset is an understatement. After pulling it out of the dunk, I noticed the edges were peeling off. I looked closer and a previous owner (won’t accuse the seller as she could have purchased the bag from a thrift store and not known) had painted the edges with a black rubbery material similar to resolene but not the right texture. Also the dunk uncovered a nail polish stain on the front.
Would you guys peel the rubbery stuff off and try to condition the edges and try to fix the nail polish stain or should I open a return case? I paid $116 with duties and shipping thinking I was getting a made in nyc bag with no fading on the corners. Now, under the rubbery coating, I can see there is fading and the stain so I feel like its not worth what I paid. Not really sure what to do...

Ugh, I'm so sorry. Could you maybe post a photo of the area that rubbery stuff peeled away from and of how bad the fading around the corners is? I'm afraid that once you've dunked the bag, returning it is going to be tough. Especially since listings typically don't say 'untouched bag just waiting to be submerged in soapy water' but rather assume that you want to wear the bag as is.

I paid with paypal and it was through Ebay. I messaged the seller to see what she has to say about it, but yea, I have a feeling the return is gonna be a hassle. I don’t think Ebay will care that I dunked the bag or not because these are big flaws not disclosed. Im pretty sure I won’t get my duties and shipping back since I used the global shipping program which means even if the seller accepted the return, its only gonna be a partial refund :( I attached a picture of one of the edges, the others are wet so I can’t tell yet if they will come out faded or not:

Looks to me as if someone has just painted the piping to hide wear on the bag. If its only there and not the edge coating on the strap then I think dunking and CPRing Renapur?Blackrocks will get those edges looking better.
Just my novice opinion.

I think this sort of fading could come around with just conditioning. I know myself, I would try to get the rubbery stuff off at all costs, but it looks like it could be a PITA. If it's easy to remove I'd remove and see what conditioner can do. If it turns into a mess of rubbery shreds, I'd try the refund.
I'd be super bummed too, sorry that happened.

The more I peel, the stickier its getting! This is such a disaster. Im gonna try to peel it all off and used a wet cloth to remove the “sticky film” on the edges. Im so disappointed lol, I wanted a companion bag for a long time. Fingers crossed that I can fix this:sad:

They look good.
Im still trying to find fabric paint here in NZ...none in town and the Spotlight stores dont seem to have it to buy online or in shop. Will have to keep looking or buy from overseas
Mine came from Walmart and was $1.25 after tax. Amazon has it too I think, if they ship where you are. This was my first time using it and it seemed to work out ok. No more holes at the very least.

I agree with the others, it is some sort of paint (puffy paint or edge coating used as paint). It should come off and doing another dunk and condition should fix the corners. I don’t think ebay will refund you since you washed it. Doesn’t hurt to try, but maybe not say you discovered the black stuff after washing it, just say you saw it after careful inspection. There was nail polish or something on my Winnie, I knew it was there, and gently massaging the area during washing got rid of it.

The seller said she never sealed the edges and I believe her. I think whoever or wherever she bought it from might have done the sloppy job. Its coming off but it will definitely need another dunk as its become very sticky. Also, to make matters worse, the bag wreaks of fish now!! The odour is whatever, I have my deodorizing methods but that nail polish stain refuses to budge. I even scrubbed it gently with a toothbrush. I don’t wanna strip the bag’s colour or else Id use something stronger to remove it. Im not gonna bother returning it now because I found out the seller will have to pay the return cost back and I feel bad about making someone pay International shipping fees. Im really hoping this bag turns out ok though

Ebay does care that you dunked the bag. You've altered it, it can no longer be returned.
