Oh no! Thanks for sharing about your mistake! I used toothpaste once on a zipper after reading a tip here but only a tiny bit and rinsed it off before I started the dunk. Now I know not to leave it in the water and be diligent about rinsing it off if I were to do that again! Sorry for that ordeal and hope your Chester turns out ok!
Thanks! You did great listening to your intuition. I remember thinking 'hm, maybe I should rinse that off before dunking' but then went 'nah, it's gonna be fine'. I'm kicking myself! Fingers crossed. No gray so far.

I just counted the bags in my “ purchased” record with eBay since September and am embarrassed to admit to 20. All of them are still with my SIL in Massachusetts and will have to remain there until the US/Canada border reopens!
Of course, I have also recently discovered a lust for older Filofax planners, also still in Massachusetts. At least they take up less space than Coach bags!
Do you use the Filofax planners, or just collect them? I like the super mini size. They are so cute!

I have used one since the 90’s and then bought a new one late last year ( to keep different info) and was horrified at the new “leather” version. It was a bit like the difference between vintage Coach and current Coach. That started my new compulsion. At this point I have acquired (but have not yet seen) several personal and compact size versions. I am dying to see the compacts that will double as wallets.

Hi all:

Happy Monday!

Was cleaning out my closets and discovered this gem among my pile of long forgotten STUFF. As you can see from the pictures, the leather is dry ... May I ask the experts here what do I need/should do to give this bag another extended life? Does it require some color or maybe some condition (moisturize) will do? I looked through my DH's shoe kit and found these stuff (last pic) - can I use any of these? ALL advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, stay well and stay safe.
Cheers

Very happy to be finally posting a complete rehab! At the beginning of February, I felt lucky to find a NYC Letter Brief, very worn, but no crazy stains (thank you previous owner for minding your pens!!!) for just over $70 shipped. I wanted a bag that I could rotate with my BT Bancroft.
I figured since there was so much wear/color loss on the piping I could touch it up with Saphir recolorant I have used before, so that wasn't a concern.
Here are the before pics: Letter Brief before back.jpg Letter Brief before front.jpg

So after my usual routine kitchen sink wash of 20 minutes in warm water and 1/2 ounce of Lexol Cleaner and a light toothbrush scrub, 20 minutes warm water rinse with a cup of vinegar, 3-4 apps of CPR with buffing in between, a little polish up of the hardware with a generic jewelry cloth and an app of Renapur (sparingly applied and let it sit overnight before buffing), here it is!!!

It stands nicely on it's own, thanks to a small can of tomato paste in the bottom while it was drying. The CPR brought back the color on the piping. I was amazed, I still am. And the Renapur just kicked it up a notch and really helped the strap. I had decided recently since I was on my dregs of Blackrock to order Renapur since it appeared to give others great results. Thanks to those who did share results, I am not disappointed. It's felt like the benefits of Blackrock kicked up a bit, with no tackiness. The leather is actually smooshy!
In fact, so many of my bags need a little spiff up and conditioning from regular use, I definitely plan to see what Renapur does for them.

I think I would wipe it down with damp cloth to remove any surface dirt. Then apply the Cadillac Lotion first and see what it looks like from there. Definitely not the Obenauf's. The Lexol is very thin. I'm not overwhelmed with Coach's products. The Blackrock is a finisher for a full on restoration. It could be used, but see what an app or two of the Cadillac does. Others will chime in.
eta, nice closet find!

OH boy, I have a mistake to share! I think I can answer my own earlier question about Blue Merle Chester. I dunked her again, briefly and just in clear water, and the mottled grey came right back once it started drying a little. The areas also felt weirdly cardboardy and dull.
Guys, I used toothpaste to clean the zipper and trusted that the huge tub full of water would dilute the foam from that enough to not hurt the leather. DON'T EVER DO THIS. The toothpaste foam settled right into the leather and seemed to feel very at home there.
I feel like a total idiot. Ugh.

Well, I dunked her again, extra hot and with my super cheap, super harsh dish soap (I usually use wool detergent). I sponged her down with what felt like buckets of soap and agitated her in the bath like a madwoman to mimick what a washing machine would do. I then changed the water, did another round of soapy agitation and finally rinsed her. She easily spent an hour submerged in very soapy, hottish water. I did this something like 11 hours ago and she still looks black now. If the toothpaste resurfaces, she's going in the machine. Lesson learned!

I am the one to blame. I used toothpaste on hardwares with success and shared the tips here. Sorry. I used on brass turnlocks and zippers, then rinse it off with running tab water and toothbrush very well, it didn't go into the water for bag soaking, that's probably why I never noticed any problems. Thanks for sharing this.
ETA: actually just remembered I used straight toothpaste on leather once, trying to remove a tough stain mark, it didn't work, but didn't left behind chalky residues either.

I've seen the super cute wallet combination. All brands of planners have poorer leather than vintage. Once in awhile you can find vintage leather planners that have never been used. Some of the older Franklin Quest stuff is as nice as vintage Coach.
