Guys my Winnie is already here! It's in great shape but really needs a dunk, do you agree? Because it's a dowel bag, it makes me nervous. Do I do anything different dunking a bag with a dowel? Also it smells like smoke. Does that come out with a dunk or would it eventually fade off if i decide not to dunk? I was thinking I might not dunk any more bags but this one might necessitate it. Also any one know what the white spots might be? I figure it would wipe off. View attachment 4678043 View attachment 4678044 View attachment 4678045 View attachment 4678046

Don't worry about the dowel, I have dunked four Willis a Murphy and a Post Pouch all have dowels and none of them came to harm from being dunked.

Alright I will go ahead and dunk-n-stuff with a little vinegar. I do think it is going to be necessary because the leather is so soft that the dowel is flopping forward. Hopefully a dunk will stiffen enough to hold it up. I went ahead and released funds to the seller and I hung it outside. I'll check it in a while and see if the smoke smell is coming off. It had already dissipated some just since unboxing it. Also I had some Renapur arrive today so this will be a good test for that product.

You might want to add some baking soda in the bag as you’re airing it out. I sprinkle generously in all pockets. I’ve done this before and had luck. Just dump out the loose soda when you’re ready to dunk. No need to vacuum. Just make sure to rinse well.

It's a permanent marker so it isn't going to come off unless there is a special cleaner made for permanent marker. Even if there is, it is likely it will remove the leather dye as well. The best thing you can do is find some acrylic paint that matches and touch it up.
Does this mean it won't bleed if dunked? My new find, the daypack, has sharpie on the inside and I was afraid if I dunked it without some preliminary work it would bleed.

I don't know for sure. You can test it by rubbing it with some alcohol or warm water. I can't ever remember sharpie bleeding. It looks like someone may have scribbled sharpie over something else, may be a name, and that could have been written in ballpoint.

I used acetone on it and some was removed but not much. I put a waterproof bandage over the spot as a precaution when I dunked it. It didn't bleed through.

Alright my, is it camel? is it yellow? daypack. Here is the before, and then after the dunk, scrub, and vinegar rinse. It's stuffed to be shaped and hopefully it dries quickly so I can start conditioning. I added the hangtag to show why it's my conflicted bag, the hangtag and parts of it look yellow when it was dry, but wet it is taking on camel. Who knows!

I think it is yellow. Are you sure it is authentic?

I don't claim to be an expert but it feels and looks real to me. I'll post picks with creed in the authenticate forum too though.

ETA: I didn't dunk the hangtag which is why the extreme color difference. It was dry, the bag was wet.

Omg! Renapur is hands down a miracle worker! I bought it last week after the big discussion here. I had purchased a very sad Willis for $10. It was beat up, the piping looked like it might have been worn through and it had a plastic replacement strap-things I didn’t care about since I only wanted it’s hardware. Well...after a bath, 3 coats of CPR, removal and polish if all hardware, and a final magical coat of Renapur I now have a beautiful and usable Willis! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the amazing rehabbers here who always share their photos and recommendations.
The transformation is magical. Wow..

Love the way your Willis came out, that was the final nuge I needed to get of my butt and finally order Renapur.

My coach factory gold chain arrived today so I’m calling my Gramercy 7006 rehab just about finished. There are still some small scratches on the back that I want to try using fabric puff paint on but that’ll be later on. Also, two of the corner dents aren’t completely gone but much improved.

I dunked with dish soap and tepid water for 10 minutes total including gentle scrubbing mainly on the inside and rinse. I stuffed with towels and reshaped and let dry. It took a long time to completely dry, can’t remember... maybe 4 days? Afterwards, I conditioned with a tiny bit of Bick 4 leather conditoner. It actually wasn’t a very involved rehab but it’s much improved and I’m happy.

Some before and after pics:

Thanks to @katev for the chain idea as a replacement- I managed to grab one on sale too:

She mentioned that the hardware is a brushed gold whereas the chain is shiny but I think it still goes together well enough for me!! I can’t wait to use the bag!!
