Anyone ever successfully dunked burnished leather? I found this Hampton hobo, and the leather is in good shape but really dirty. I mean REALLY dirty, like dirt comes off on your hands while handling. You can't really tell from the photo, but I would be more comfortable dunking. Any suggestions?

I clean mine with white vinegar on a soft cloth. If that doesn't get it clean enough for you to feel comfortable carrying it, dunking could be a last resort.

Yes. I dunked a burnished legacy ergo. It came out beautiful.

I once dunked a Girlie Tweed Hobo that had burnished leather trim and it came out fine.

Thank you for everyone's responses so far. One of the challenges of removal will be that you can't see it when it gets wet.

Just note the worst areas before you dump it in the bath and try and concentrate your efforts in those spots. If necessary, you can wash again.

You can also tie it up in a pillowcase (or a net laundry bag) and run it through the washer with woolite; that helped the briefcase I rehabbed.

I’ve had a little success removing the shoe polish with acetone (nail polish remover). I’ve never bathed a polished bag so I can’t give any advice to that. But I would dunk after acetone removal and treat accordingly. You can search this thread for key words or phrases up above, and my best advice would be to start reading! You got this! ;)

I dunked 2 Bleeker large flap with burnished leather, both came out fine and clean.

I got this station bag in a thredup rescue box. I am not sure if I caused this discoloration. I washed it in woolite and applied Marten’s miracle balm before it dried, I used a hair drier to make it easier to wipe it off. It almost looks like a prior owner may have applied shoe polish, or my use of the hair drier may have removed some of the color unevenly. I obviously have no Idea what I am doing. The darker picture was when it was still wet.
I have been using acetone. Seems to be shoe polish. This could take years.
