Sometimes buyers don't realize how much shipping actually costs! Since I live near the coast, it costs me a lot more to ship to the opposite coast than someone living in the middle of the country. If I can't cram it into a small enough box, I can run into the oversized package charge. I've had shipping costs go up over $40 if the package is considered oversized.
I've only sold 2 bags so far and both times I had to pay a couple dollars out of pocket for shipping even though I selected the option to allow eBay to calculate the actual shipping cost. Both times I sent the bags in small boxes, one was a flat rate USPS box and the other was a small box about the same size. Fortunately I was able to use boxes I already had on hand but next time I'll have to buy a box too. I have many more bags to sell and I'm considering upping the shipping charges just a little bit. I was also surprised to see eBay charge me taxes on a bag I sold. I thought only buyers paid taxes.

Thank you for the Legacy color versus Bleeker color information *taking notes*
Shout out to @Catbird9 for tossing Walnut into the mix! With documentation.
The walnut has much softer leather than the british tan. I also have this bag in green and black and I bought one for my mom in black. The black is also very soft but the walnut is almost velvety soft. Unfortunately it scuffs so easily, but it's beautiful!

That makes me almost afraid to go fish my Legacy Garcia out of the mailbox this morning, got her for a super price plus 20% off coupon and free shipping, I'm starting to feel sorry for that seller.
Morgan up your shipping now that you know what the real price is adjust it, also if you get the flat rate boxes from the post office they are usually free of charge.I have gotten bags in padded envelopes as long as the bag isn't damaged that doesn't bother me one bit.One bag came in a box you could have added 3 more bags to it with room to spare I did ask myself "what was that seller thinking".

As an international buyer, the most important parts of the listing are actually the photos and description of the bag’s condition, imo. I am willing (and have done so in the past) to pay slightly more to buy a well listed bag, despite the shipping charges. So don’t go out of pocket for that.

And I agree about the padded envelop too! Received a number of bags that way with no issue. I actually prefer the padded envelops over boxes.

My green or currant Willis, I can't remember which, came in a huge box and the purse was unprotected and unwrapped with only a handful of packing peanuts in the box. It was banging around in there the whole trip to my house. No real damage and nothing a dunk and slather couldn't fix though. But I wonder now of the cost of shipping that huge box.

Of course one wants the best bag for there money, if a bag is poorly listed, only a couple of blurry photos missing creed ect. I don't even bother.I do concider myself lucky to live here with such reasonable shipping rates.
I used to send wood that I sourced here in the States to a crafter in New Zealand then we would work out design and other things he would craft and then send the finished product to me.We both came out ahead it safed hugely on shippin cost.

There are free boxes from the post office. Not just flat rate. The others you have to order, but they are free, and they deliver them to your house. https://store.usps.com/store/result...lnx4jZyz4qdpZ7d0v8vZ1dqlux5?_requestid=186057
The sizes I use most are 12 x 12 x 8 and 12 1/8 x 13 3/8 x 2 3/4.
I save every box that I get a delivery in. Now that I have Amazon prime, I'm getting more boxes I can use.

Ebay doesn't charge you taxes. They charge the buyer taxes. It is added onto the money that processes through paypal. Paypal takes their fee on the entire amount, including the taxes, which you have no control over, then deducts the taxes back out and sends it to ebay. So you pay paypal fees on taxes, but not ebay fees. You are also paying Ebay and paypal fees on your shipping charge, so about 13%. You have to add that into your shipping charges, just to break even. If you charge $10 for shipping, you only really get $8.70 of that.

I don't pre-calculate how much it would cost me to ship as there are too many variables, so I just charge an estimated amount and hope I'm close. I always charge a flat rate amount as I don't trust ebay's calculator. I try to make it reasonable even if it might cost me more, because I think buyers balk at shipping prices that aren't in line with the cost of the item. For example, if I'm selling an item for $30, anything over $10 or $12 in shipping will seem excessive to buyers. The cheapest priority package, not counting a flat rate envelope, is over $10 for me, and that is only if it is under 2 pounds. Most purses packed up are around 3 pounds, so it usually costs $14 or so for me unless I can fit it in a flat rate box, which is almost as much.

I don't save any money putting a bag in an envelope vs a box. It is the weight of the item that determines the shipping cost, unless the box is larger than USPS considers to be a standard size. The weight is rounded up to the nearest full pound, so if you have a box that weighs just over 2 pounds, you have to pay for 3 pounds. I use newspaper to stuff around the wrapped item so it won't move around in the box, as long as it doesn't push it up into the next weight category.

I think some sellers work at a company where they can use their company's shipping department so they aren't paying the shipping costs.

You're right, of course! I just went back and looked at the PayPal summary of my last sale and sure enough, eBay added the taxes then PayPal subtracted them and their fees. I only saw the subtraction and then got pissy about it. Oops. Well that's a little less annoying. And thanks for the tip on free boxes!!

So true!

There are a few cases where I can save money using a padded envelope vs a box. The weight of the box will sometimes tip the scale into the next weight level (from 2 to 3 lbs, for example). In that case I'd use a padded envelope.

As someone who has just started selling on eBay, I've also discovered that printing a label through eBay can be a little cheaper, even for Priority Mail. I sent a medium flat rate box yesterday that would usually cost me around $14, but I used an eBay label so it cost around $12. A lot of people buy shipping from Pirate Ship, which offers discounted shipping as well. I haven't tried them yet.

I did also use eBay's Global Shipping Program for the first time yesterday and so far it seems simple enough. The item was breakable so hopefully it makes it to the buyer intact!
