Well here is my challenge! Can I restore this BT Plaza (large) to its former glory? A black Plaza I purchased in great condition is rooting it on! I will say, the BT has that amazingly smooshy leather. Maybe that made it easier to be completely squashed flat, and I mean flat. The softness of the leather and size of the front slip pocket are encouring to consider removing both pieces of the turnlock to clean :yes:View attachment 4519037
Update, it is standing up nicely, nice and rounded with just a bit of a pooch in front. Classic Plaza.
With the air conditioning on, and the leather just hanging onto water like a sponge, I decided to wait until tonight to start some CPR. And the brass turn lock has a nice shine to it. The jewelry wipes I had cleaned it up 90 %, which fits the character of the bag just fine.
And the jewelry wipes create a bit of residue on the leather around the turnlock ( next time I’ll protect the leather), so better to that before dunking, as it will wash off.

So I’m on eBay last night before bed and this listing pops up as just been listed. I look at the buy it now price and do a double take. Less than 40 bucks for a vintage post pouch! I jumped at the chance to see one of these beauty’s in person. So excited! Looks like it’s in amazing shape. The guy sells video games usually and I’m not sure he knew what he had. In any case I’ll have it by the weekend! Here’s hoping I don’t have to dunk.
I have one question. Has anyone run into issues dunking models with dowels in them. Murphy, Willis, post? Does it bother them at all?
I love it when men sell Coach. That’s how I got my Sling for $30 bucks shipped.

This looks like a gorgeous color. Did you find out if it's mold? I can't wait to see it when you're done!
Thanks and the color is so pretty! I think it was mold, I poured vinegar on it and it kind of dissolved instantly. After letting it sit in the sun I dunked it and I’m working on getting a few coats of CPR on it. It’s not as soft as pre dunk so I hope the suppleness comes back but on the plus side the color stayed vibrant and didn’t darken much after the dunk!

Mine is still damp but I'm not sure the smell will be gone fully. I did soapy water for 30-45 min then vinegar water for about an hour and a clear water soak for about hour. I had some interruptions... Any chance a second dunking will help or is it basically one and done? :crybaby:

A second dunk probably won't do much for the odor. Apply conditioner and then it needs to dry, outdoors if possible, or indoors with a fan on it, for a few days or longer.

So the type of soap or amount of vinegar doesn't matter? I don't understand why it didn't work. Or am I just being impatient?

I find odors get weaker as they dry. I think the water evaporates the smell away. It may not be gone completely once dry but conditioning and setting outside (if not humid) will help. There have been a few here who have attacked odors over a few weeks by putting them in sealed bags with baking soda and other products. It may take a bit but don’t give up!

Ok guys here she is all clean, dry, conditioned, and blackrocked. Very supple and dark, but still has brown undertones with not even a hint of blue. I realize that this is supposed to be an almost black type of navy, but the inside suede and the leather pocket definitely have a blue undertone to them that I’m just not seeing on the outside. The outside is definitely dark brownish. I’m wondering if she was stored in the sun by the previous owner or what happened! Yall, I really wanted a navy Willis and I really want to love this bag  I asked my fiancé what color this bag was and he said mahogany:sad: Is it time to do something a little more aggressive?

I wouldn’t give up all hope. Time and leaving a box of baking soda in a bag helped a few bags of mine that still had light odors. I will post some things I have used for general odors around the house later after work. I am also trying find the name of this medical supply product deodorizer that I know a former poster here with a nursing background. I have worked in a clinical setting and I can vouch for it. It was ordered through McKesson Medical supplies.

Smelleze has been mentioned. I haven't tried it myself but it might be worth a try (if nothing else works):

I rehabbed a red binocular bag and it was fine. For the second bag I don't think it will smooth out. I think the leather used is just different but can't hurt to try dunking.

Thank you, I didn't know if the red leather was different "batch" or had streched out somehow. I remember now seeing bags that had slight texture on one side or bottom... but not so pronounced.

View attachment 4520355 Trying to decide if I should go for this one— what are the chances of getting rid of the old pen marks across the front?
I am Ms Grinch when it comes to ink marks. Chances of removing them are zero to none in my experience. The best you can hope for is minimizing their appearance by lots of conditioning and buffing.
