Mine is still damp but I'm not sure the smell will be gone fully. I did soapy water for 30-45 min then vinegar water for about an hour and a clear water soak for about hour. I had some interruptions... Any chance a second dunking will help or is it basically one and done? :crybaby:

I got a vintage coach wallet that smelled soooooo bad (seller didn't mention it in the listing). I dunked it in soap and then vinegar, and the smell was still horrific. I decided to go through with CPR and Blackrocks, and set it aside. A couple weeks later, I picked it up and the smell was gone! I'm sure a purse will take a bit longer than a wallet, but I think you just need to give it some time.

Found it. Sacsmagnifiques used to post here, as tetondeb I believe. She uses Medi-choice Biological Odor Spray. Google her website there is a page of products she uses. She says she sprays her bag thoroughly then soaks it and sprays it while drying. I would definitely give this a try.

Just wanted to let you know that I had a very stinky Courier once that reeked of smoke. I could still smell the smoke odor after the vinegar soak. I changed the water and did the soak again with another cup of vinegar. Sometimes you need two baths to get rid of the smell. Just depends on how strong the smell is I guess.

Since we are talking about smelly bags! I recently purchased a city bag and after dunking it still smelled musty so I decided to put it through the gentle cycle in my washing machine, it doesn’t have the center pole agitator and no spin cycle. It survived fine! It still has a little of the smell so I’m just letting it sit with the charcoal deodorizers I’ve mentioned. It seems to be getting a little better. I’m just going to let it be for a while and eventually try some baking soda. If the smell never goes away no big loss it was cheap but I’ll probably just donate then.

On the plus side it made me realize I don’t really care for the style, cute but not for me!

I think that a couple of thin applications of BlackRocks and buffing might restore the color of that bag beautifully. I would try that before resorting to dyes and paints. When it is all done you might need to touch up the piping on the corners with something - but maybe not. Even if it ends up not quite as dark as the inside, it may look gorgeous.
Hey again! I posted a pic a couple of pages back of mine after blackrock and I’m still not seeing any blue undertones in the leather. I’m in town rn where I have access to leather care stuff. What’s my next option? :(

I'm finally done with my Pony Express bag! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, I just think I would have put a coat of oil on first. The suede on the inside is pretty dry in some areas. Here are some before and afters.View attachment 4520577View attachment 4520579View attachment 4520580View attachment 4520587View attachment 4520588View attachment 4520589
Wow looks amazing! How did you get the stains out? Did they just disappear in the bath or did you have to treat with anything?

Well here is my challenge! Can I restore this BT Plaza (large) to its former glory? A black Plaza I purchased in great condition is rooting it on! I will say, the BT has that amazingly smooshy leather. Maybe that made it easier to be completely squashed flat, and I mean flat. The softness of the leather and size of the front slip pocket are encouring to consider removing both pieces of the turnlock to clean :yes:View attachment 4519037
Nice to see a bag stand on its own again, especially since it has such a broad base! just put another app of CPR on, still drying.

Yes, it does look as though the bag got discolored from the sun. I haven’t dealt with anything like that. Maybe others have suggestions .

Aww! Well thanks anyway :( I really wanted to have a deep dark blue bag. I’ll probably end up dyeing it. Before I go order fiebings, has anyone ever dunked their vintage coaches into something like RIT dye? Is there something like that for leather? It seems like something you can soak it in would work better on these unlined full grain leathers?

So the type of soap or amount of vinegar doesn't matter? I don't understand why it didn't work. Or am I just being impatient?
I had a bag so full of smoke that I eventually took extreme measures by spritzing it inside and out with a bottle of 50/50 white vinegar water until the bag was saturated and letting it air dry outside, 3 times. I ended up washing it twice because I discovered ink. So I also poured vinegar inside after the first wash. It worked. I believe the fresh air, like others mentioned, was the key, but the vinegar accelerated the process. The combination of the vinegar evaporating in the fresh air seemed to take the odor out with it as it evaporated. Before the vinegar spray, I had it outside unless it was raining and alternated bags of zeolite rocks (odor absorbers) and charcoal pouches. I just didn't want to wait months or a year to see if it would work. My accelerated process took about 2 weeks. It is important to note this was my one rehab; so proceed with caution.
