Well here is my challenge! Can I restore this BT Plaza (large) to its former glory? A black Plaza I purchased in great condition is rooting it on! I will say, the BT has that amazingly smooshy leather. Maybe that made it easier to be completely squashed flat, and I mean flat. The softness of the leather and size of the front slip pocket are encouring to consider removing both pieces of the turnlock to clean :yes:View attachment 4519037
I hear that! Getting down inside a compact pouch to remove the turnlock was quite the test of my patience. I was more than happy to take it off the casino I’m working on. :)

Well, my update is that I did not remove the hardware after all. I thought a super small B&D screw driver would slide somewhat ready under the prongs to loosen them enough to flip up. Wrong! The mini screw driver was sliding all over. Since I was feeling a complete lack of patience for this task, and did not want to gouge my hand or the leather, I decided to go with jewelry cleaning wipes and a little elbow grease. It did the passable minimum. Bag dunked and draining in the sink.
In the meanwhile, I’ll search up all the clever ideas people have posted about removing turn locks for the next time. I know I have a pair of work gloves somewhere, too.

I used this exacto blade off the handle to get into the bag and the plastic one once I got it up a little with the exacto. I used the search feature on here to see what others had used and didn’t find much other than the exacto idea. It works great, you just need to be super careful about scratching and the blades dull pretty quick.
I just found your post on a search. Thanks for showing what you used to get under a prong in order to lift it! I’ll keep this in mind for the future.
ETA, poster @Spilledink used cuticle nippers to grab the prongs to lift them. I have them and will give them a try.

My new everyday purse! I just finished her. Accidentally over polished the turnlock, but I’m happy. The seller had applied doc martens wonder balsam and she was still dry when I got her so I purchased some myself. And wow!! I love this stuff!! All the shine and none of the buffing!? What!? Lol
Anyway, I don’t think this crescent was ever really used. She has little to no wear and only had a lot of vertigris around the lock.
I’ll have to take a picture of her in the sun tomorrow. She’s Navy ish and stunning!!

I just realized this is the bag I'm working on even the same color! I hope mine looks as good as yours when I'm done. The color is so gorgeous!

Ok. My lack of patience won and I took the plunge (literally) even down to taking the hardware off. It was disgusting! I used a tiny screwdriver to lift the tabs enough to get a table knife under and then only lifted enough to be able to get the pieces off. Totally worth it! I used a toothpick and q-tips to clean all of the hardware.

She's currently on the vinegar and water soak. The soapy water dunk went fine. Seems like some of the smell is gone. Anyone ever had the water be a pinkish color from a blue bag after soaking? I was surprised it didn't look brown.

Here's before and afters on some of the hardware. It was hard to stop the glare off of them lol

Would you use the vinegar with a red bag? The inside of my new Murphy bag is a little worn and dirty but I tend to be gentle with red bags because I have had mixed results in the past.

I have used Vinegar on Red Bags with good results. Some tend to bleed color more than others so wear rubber gloves. I had red hands for a few days after one that i forgot to put on gloves till it was too late.:confused1:
It is a beautiful bag cant wait to see her after the dunk.

So I’m on eBay last night before bed and this listing pops up as just been listed. I look at the buy it now price and do a double take. Less than 40 bucks for a vintage post pouch! I jumped at the chance to see one of these beauty’s in person. So excited! Looks like it’s in amazing shape. The guy sells video games usually and I’m not sure he knew what he had. In any case I’ll have it by the weekend! Here’s hoping I don’t have to dunk.
I have one question. Has anyone run into issues dunking models with dowels in them. Murphy, Willis, post? Does it bother them at all?

I have dunked four Willises there has bin no issue with the dowels.

Hello ladies, I would appreciate your input and TIA.
I have these two bags, that I believe would benefit from the dunking although they are not that bad.
One is a Binocular Bag Spectator and the other a Duffle Sac.
My concern with the first is the stiff top flap, I don't know what is inside, but would it be affected by the bath?
On the second I am wondering why on one side the leather is smooth and on the other "wrinkled". Would the bath take the wrinkles away or is the leather like that?

I rehabbed a red binocular bag and it was fine. For the second bag I don't think it will smooth out. I think the leather used is just different but can't hurt to try dunking.

Question - would you wash a red Taft bag that isn't dry or dirty, but just smushed? I just received my new-to-me Taft and she looks a little flat. The sides are bent in. Would washing and conditioning help give more shape to the bag?

Yes if you want the shape back. When you stuff the bag after a bath it will dry in the shape you stuff it. You probably don't even need to use any soap if it's not dirty at all. Just soak in water for 15 min. Stuff and dry and condition.
