Has anyone used oxyclean successfully on a white bag? I just got a Ivory or bone fletcher that is filthy and am curious if it would work. The bag was a steal so I don’t mind experimenting if someone wants to give me the green light.

Sorry for spamming with three messages in a row, but here are the final before-and-after's of my '80s/'90s vintage Compact Pouch. It took 5 coats of CPR and it was still soaking it in quickly on the last coat; I didn't do a coat of Blackrocks on this bag because I was worried it would darken it, but those of you who have used it on British Tan (which I believe this bag is?) would you recommend I try it on this bag regardless?

I posted pics on Monday of a British tan compact pouch I did with cpr and blackrock. A couple coats of blackrock if I’m remembering properly. I apologize that I’m still unsure how to do the fancy quotes and tags yet on this forum or else I would have put a link. :)

So I am now the proud owner of this Large Plaza! That is squashed flat  I was looking at listings (very) late a few night ago and came across this with MAO. The next morning I offered almost 1/2 the asking price, and was immediately accepted. Looking forward to dunking on Saturday. There is a little verdigris around the female turnlock piece so I will muster the ambition to remove it and thoroughly clean it. It will be an interesting complement to my black Plaza.

I've used oxy, it works ok but reeeeelly drys out the leather so definitely use alot of conditioner afterwards. I've also used a little...bleach...:wtf: not recommended because again it's very drying.

I have to agree with @Busykitty -- removing is really the only way to get it fully clean underneath; I tried picking at it with a toothpick and a q-tip and I'm sure that would have been fine on the surface, but once I removed the hardware (which IS a pain in the butt and I sliced my finger at one point) I saw all the gunk underneath.

Here's what I was dealing with before I removed the hardware:

This is what was underneath. UGH. There's no way I could have gotten to it without removing it:

Oh wow! That's  OK. I'll probably give it a shot. What about the grommets on the strap? Do those come off easily? I'm nervous about being able to get the hardware back on.

Looks like it will rehab nicely :)

I picked up a burgundy convertible clutch! It’s the most beautiful color and I really like the size of it, it feels very Lady like. Sadly I found what I think is mold on the underside of the flip out pocket. Boo. I’ll be searching through the thread to find some remedies. I’m assuming I should pretreat before dunking.

So a little update...

The stain on the back is still there but significantly lighter. Maybe it'll be better once I condition or end up dunking it. It's not a deal breaker for me since it's light and on the back of the bag.

I ended up spraying the inside with straight vinegar (bad move?) and moved it to hanging outside during the day and in the house at night. I realized the garage gets too warm. I think the smell is a little better but I don't know. It's not even close to being usable. I thought I would give it another day to make sure it's fully dry then put the odor remover things back in and put it back in a bag. I was thinking about ordering some of the charcoal odor removers that were recommended. Or should I just bite the bullet and dunk the darn thing? I know this process can take time but don't want to be wasting time on something that isn't going to work either. Not that anything is a guarantee.

That color looks gorgeous!

No, you can't remove those. Just clean them as best you can with q-tips, toothpicks and paper towels.

I agree with others that removing the turnlock is really the only way to completely clean the verdigris. I also understand your hesitancy. They can be a bit challenging to remove and reinstall. There's nothing wrong with cleaning the turnlock as best you can without removing it.

Yes, definitely treat the spots with straight vinegar before dunking, and I'd use vinegar in the bath and rinse too.

Your bag is a Basic Bag, also called a Zippered Clutch.

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for storing the rehabbing supplies (leather conditioner, metal polish, etc.). Do you have a specific box, etc. you particularly like? I'm really disorganized and would like to find a solution!
I find a good old Rubbermaid bucket helps. I have been working on decluttering and organizing in general and I pick up different inexpensive plastic or metal bins of different sizes for storage solutions. I have the unused ones nested so as I become inspired to use one they are handy. As been mentioned, caddy’s are great too. Lol my sister asked if I could *work some magic* on a Tory Burch pebbled bag and a pair of leather shoes. I took Lexol Cleaner , CPR, a few other items over in an old Bleeker tote. The rehabber “doctor bag”.
