The color could change drastically when the bag has been washed and then conditioned (vs. just the conditioning). The leather becomes more absorbent and soaks in much more moisturizer than dry leather. Dunking usually makes colors deeper and more vibrant, and if I'm dealing with a bag that hasn't been conditioned for a long time, even if it's in good shape, I normally start with washing it.

Hi, catthecurious! Thanks! I’m all over the map with “To wash or not to wash?”. [emoji6] Some I do, others I don’t & still others I decide to after having them for awhile. I like the way my sage bag currently looks but am so interested in how the color might respond to washing. It would be exciting if it were possible to get closer to the original.

I don't hesitate to dunk if the bag is unlined and vintage.

Hi, @Belicious!

I was looking back through older posts & found your photo of your sage bags. They look lovely!

If you washed them, how did that affect their color? I was just asking about this in my last post here because I’m wondering if it would be worth considering washing the one I have. I’m thinking my sage color may have changed too much over the years & washing may not bring it back.
I have washed them. I wash them all! And the color of the dinky bag in particular didn't change in terms of the flap being more faded than the rest. I really like to darken any fading with an application of Obenauf's. Looks horrible at first then often enough the color comes back in more evenly in faded spots.

Thanks! I’ll post if I take the plunge with it! [emoji6]

I remember you posting that you bought the bag for it. Do you remember if you had an idea how you wanted to use it?
I bought the bag, I thought it would make a nice summerish kind of grap n go weekend bag.
I found the flower. It's in the bag of all my extra hangtags. I should try to figure out if it goes with any of my bags. It is kind of small so probably should be on a small bag.

BTW, I may have the same bag - or at least a similar style. I bought the Gramercy Top Handle Satchel 7002 made in Italy in 1999 and had it authenticated here on TPF. I paid $50 for it and it is still neglected and waiting for attention in my rehab pile!

It's a lovely bag. I found a listing for it on the Wayback Machine in Black and Wheat but I haven't found anything for the dark red color.

Forgot to add maybe there's something not very obvious that makes your dark red satchel need a rehab, but it looks amazing in the picture. Do you mind my asking how heavy is it (a pound? more?) and whether it has the same kind of chamois lining as your black shoulder Gramercy purse?

It's really dirty inside. I actually started the rehab last night after taking about the bag. Yes, it has the same kind of chamois lining as my other gramercy bag but the flap is also lined with the same kind of leather used on the outside of the bag.

Can you give me a ballpark estimate how heavy is it, Kate? I'm trying to figure out whether I can carry one on my shoulder, and since I don't have any Italian bags, there's nothing to compare to.
Sometimes those talks can give you a good boost, lol! I think I'll start a long-planned project today since I was finally able to do something about my severely cracked fingers that prevented me from doing that sort of work.
