It's not a perfect solution but it helps IMO. I spray all my leather, suede, fabric, straw, etc. bags with:
Apple Brand Garde Rain & Stain Water Repellent
You can buy it on Amazon and other sites, see the link below.

During warm weather I take the bag outside to spray it. I give each bag 2 applications with a little time in between and after to dry. In the winter, I spray bags in the bathroom with the exhaust fan running.

The only bags that I don't spray with Rain Garde are patent leather. If the bag has patent leather trim I use a damp cloth with water to wipe off the trim after I have finished spraying.

Thank you. Those are some scary 1 and 2 star reviews though. Hmmm.

I took me a long time to start using the Apple Rain Garde on my bags because I was worried about spraying some stuff on my beloved bags.

The first time that I bought a can it sat in my cabinet for awhile because I hesitated to use it, but then I got a job that required me to take the commuter train into the city in all kinds of weather. I still wanted to carry my beloved bags but I was worried about weather damage and dirt so I took the plunge and started using the Apple Garde with bags that I had concerns about getting dirty or water damaged.

I've never had any problems and I think that it has actually helped in a few situations, but you should ask others here on PF for their opinions, too.

Here's an older post of mine about how Apple Rain Garde actually saved a favorite bag from disaster:

I am just not sure I want to put it on suede. I read it makes soft suede stiffer and adds a sheen.

Rehab Reveal Time!

Dear Coach Rehabbers, I have been very lazy about rehabbing for quite some time - but that hasn't stopped me from picking up a few rehab bargains when I have been out and about! Sadly, my rehab pile has grown rather that getting smaller.

I have been lurking and staying away from Purse Forum for a bit to help me to control my urge to buy bags and also trying to avoid resale shops and garage sales, but last Friday I had an errand at our local hospital and as I was walking to the parking lot I remembered that there was a resale shop on the hospital grounds. I have picked up a few bags there in the past. Sometimes they are a little pricey but I have found something nice a few times.

I decided to "just take a look!" and was pleased to see that they were having a "13% off Sale" for Friday the 13th. They had some nice bags on display including a black Willis for $30 (plus a 13% discount) but I really fell for a bag that I had never seen before. It was marked $45 but it was $39 after the discount, and it came in the original dustbag and with a cute Tattersall pattern Coach box, so I figured that they added value. Also, I've never had a bag in this exact color so that was another attraction.

I was eager to buy it and happy to do the rehab as soon as Beenburned confirmed that the bag was genuine.

I decided to rehab another bag and a wristlet at the same time but I am not quite ready to reveal them yet.

Here are a few teaser pics of my new beauty to tempt your imaginations! I will give you a few hints. According to the creed patch and the Wayback Machine, the bag was made in 2007 and released in 2008 and it originally cost over $400, any guesses?

Do you know if this helps prevent wear on the handles, and can you condition over it as needed or do you need to use cleaner to remove it first? Thank you! I've seen so many pictures of bags with the color rubbed off on the handles and some with the handles starting to shred. I know some have suggested this is due to hand sanitizer/lotion so maybe this will help.

For handles, I would use Blackrock leather n Rich. It makes a protective coating, so the dirt sits on the conditioner, not on the bag, and cleans right off. You have to keep doing it periodically.

Here are the before photos. The bag had been used but had also been well-cared for. It was soiled and very dry and there were finger nail scratches on the leather and a few ink marks on the lining.

I washed the bag in the sink with Dawn and scrubbed it with a soft brush and the ink marks came out of the lining pretty easily. I stuffed it to dry but the biggest problem was that the bag was so dry! The strap and other parts of it were drying so fast that I was afraid the leather would crack. I put on 2 applications of leather therapy oil during drying. I gave it 2 applications of Blackrocks after it was dry and then buffed with a soft brush.

Thank you! I almost got that after reading your posts here about it. So far I just got Leather CPR to test out on a slightly dry bag. I have been hesitating to condition bags since I don't know if they need it or not, but this one does and hopefully it will be good for it.
