Hi, I’m new to vintage coach purses and purchased this bag on eBay. Overall it’s in decent condition with the exception of two things:
1) possible oil? stain in front.
2) handle is quite faded.

With a deep cleaning and condition, do u think the above will improve? Any suggestions?

Seller is willing to give me a partial refund for the issues. I didn’t pay too much ($29 including shipping) so I don’t know how much to ask.

Thanks!

Obenauf oil will darken the leather. I posted a bag in this thread today; I used the oil to create a contrast trim, you can see how much difference it made. But you have no control over how dark it will turn, your handle may end up darker than the rest of the bag.

You might be able to use a baking soda paste to lighten the oil stain. I've never gotten this to work for me but others have. It's weird the handle lightened that much.

Also the oil spot may just come out with dawn. Scrub a little straight on and let it sit for 5 minutes then give it a bath. The handle may also darken with a wash.

The faded handle puzzles me. I wonder if it was exposed to sun too long. The rest of the bag looks fine though. The handle is a completely different color. My daughter says it looks green.

I’m not sure what to do. If I should keep or return to seller.

That's weird. Maybe the handle was switched/replaced at some point. I would probably return it if you can't live with it being like that. It should've been disclosed in the listing because you can't tell much difference looking at your photos.. Also if the oil marks weren't mentioned and weren't visible that's 2 reasons to return. However if you bought it knowing it had some imperfections it's not fair to return it.

Station bags are pretty much dime a dozen on ebay so you'll come across one in better condition easily. It is a great style!

I just saw your post on your rehab. What exactly did you do? A full bath, condition then Obenauf oil? I saw that you had a stain in front too. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the bag?

The faded handle and stain were not disclosed on the listing. Actually, it was listed as VGUC and Excellent vintage condition. The seller took pictures indoors so the faded handle was not visible. But when i take it outside or under bright light, it's very noticeable. My daughter even said, "the handle looks green and bag is navy blue." You may be right... perhaps the handle was replaced at one point.

But i'm afraid i'll be stuck paying for return shipping if i try to return.

A bath with the dish washing soap. I scrubbed the stain with a tooth brush. It’s still there, but much less visible. I then conditioned the bag with Leather Therapy and glued up the torn piping.

I only used Obenauf oil on the trim (with a Q-tip) - that darkening is the difference that Obenauf oil makes, although it will lighten up a bit, takes a couple of weeks to get to the final color. I then applied Black Rock to the whole bag.

I paid $18 for my bag, but I did not have to pay any shipping. Also, this store is very cheap by the local standards, I hope they don’t change their pricing.

If it is not as described, the seller has to pay the shipping.
