Hello, it's somewhat off topic, but does anyone here have an experience rehabbing a Cashin for Meyers bag? Looks very similar to Coach - thick leather, unlined, turnlocks, kisslock purse on the back, the whole thing. I am thinking of giving it a bath and wondering how the leather will react to that. I've already read Katev's saga of her success with the burgundy bag, so I am wondering if there are more stories, happy or otherwise. Thanks a lot!

I have already shared my (limited) Cashin for Meyers advice with the OP, but I wanted to mention that there are quite a few CFM sketches in the UCLA Bonnie Cashin Archives. If you go to the link below and seach for "Meyers" it will bring up a number of options. It would be exciting if you could find a copy of Bonnie's original design for your bag in the archives. I found 2 sketches with notes for my CFM bag! I have attached a brochure from the archives about the CFM collection.

I did not find the exact sketch for my bag, but I found a sketch for something very similar - maybe it was one of the steps in development. My bag has a longer flap and two turnlock holes on each side of the strap instead of three. This is the coin purse on the back.

I think that you are correct, congratulations, that's a beautiful bag! That seems very likely, we have occasionally seen early prototypes of coach bags included in fashion events that are a little different when they finally get into production.

I attempted a rehab on one a couple of years ago. The leather wasn't nearly as nice as Coach's leather, and it was thin on some parts of the bag. I didn't feel like a bath and conditioning helped it much. The leather didn't really improve all that much. In fact, it may have made it worse. The bath also made the Cashin for Meyers logo practically disappear. I don't think I would dunk it if I had it to do over.

My Cashin for Meyers bag was dirty, creased, and smelled bad - like mildew - so I had to wash it, but I also had an issue with the logo. It was faint before I washed it and it got even fainter after a bath. I was glad that I had gotten pictures of it first.

Thank you for saving me from myself! I have one I was considering dunking but worried about the stamp disappearing.

My dilemma is that the bag is clean, but it really stinks. I tried storing it in a ziploc bag with baking soda, storing it in a freezer, airing it - nothing helped. Any other ideas are welcome.
It's got creases too at the bottom, but I think that's a design flaw (sorry, Ms. Cashin) - the coin purse has hard skeleton that doesn't go all the way down, so it pushes on unlined leather.

Does it smell like cigarette smoke?

No, it's that moldy smell of someone's basement. The thing is, I have a horrible sense of smell, can't tell whether someone is a smoker or not. And I can smell this bag standing next to it - can't imagine how it feels to a normal person.

When you aired it out, did you leave it in the sun? Sunlight has been my best weapon against that dank smell. Other people have had good luck with activated charcoal so you might try searching that (I haven't tried it yet) Beautiful bag - hope you find something that works!

I had a bag that smelled of perfume and I put aquarium charcoal in small open jars, with everything in a plastic bin. It took over a month for the smell to fade away. I should have returned the bag, but it was a charcoal Willis in otherwise perfect condition.

I've posted (probably way too many times) about O d o r z o u t and how awesome it is at removing smells from any surface. I have to space the letters out because this app "autocorrects" to some weird symbol if I don't. That stuff removed heavy, heavy smoke odor from a rent house that had been thoroughly cleaned, painted (ceilings and all), and professional deodorized to no avail. We sprinkled that stuff around and put the fans on it and overnight the smoke smell was 100% better. You MUST use the fan with it as that activates the mineral.

You can search this thread for previous posts or Google for reviews. I highly recommend, personally! :)

Unfortunately it hasn't worked for me.

I second what Ravvie99 said sunlight and outdoors has worked best for me to. Good luck.
