Wow, she looks a lot better! She doesn't look like a dollar bag now!

I have found that multiple, light applications of paint work best. Did you try washing the bag first? That might have helped the stains on the leather. Nice job!

Thanks to everyone! Yeah, lighter on the paint probably would have been better, but I got heavy handed trying to work it into the twill fabric. The spot on the leather is likely the same glue that was everywhere else. I've tried to spot clean it and will keep trying.

Stay tuned for the next BIG rehab! And I do mean BIG - and messy - but with, so far, fabulous results. Not for the faint of heart (or nose) it's an "old fashioned" method of changing the color of leather - inside and out - called Vinegroon. I'll start some new posts with pics over the next couple of days. So far it's a work in progress, but I'm very optimistic.

Thanks again for everyone's knowledge and support. J

She looks great! I have had both good and bad luck with using paints, could you tell us about your process? Thanks!

My painting of the whole bag worked. In fact, when I sealed the strap, it deposited much needed color to the legacy where color had worn off. I did not seal the bag, I was too scared. I called Joann's the next day and a SA said it would work and keep for a while but that over time it would crack-she thinks. She was not 100% sure. So with that, I came home and wahsed the legacy, I washed all of the color off of the handles and the bag - I dunked it. When I was done dunking it, I noticed that even still some color did deposit where I needed it to - around the edges and piping! I coniditoned it and she is drying. The only reason I dunked her is because I am not keeping her - I am selling her. If I was going to keep her, I would have kept the paint on for experiment reasons. At first, the paint feels hard/matte but when you apply sealant and conditioner - it becomes sooo soft again. I would have wanted to see the real long outcome but again, not keeping her.

As for my Cashin, she is totally dry and I have decided to dye her. I have been in contact with a leather expert and he recommended this dye for her www.fiebing.com. When I called these guys, they explained the process to me and as soon as I get the dye, you guys will be a part of that process:
1) De-Glazing - aka stripping - a bath can do this but if you want to be precise, strip it $6.50
2) Dye - for her, I ordered orange and british tan - I wil be mixing the two $7.50
3) I was told to either dunk her in color or spray her with an airbrush gun or cheap spray gun

Note - dunking was not suggested by Fiebing, they say it deposits too much color and can bleed too much and takes long to dry. Additionally with gloved tanned leather, it streaks so this is why the spray is being suggested. Watch out for the lining also, so I will go with the spray gun method.

4) Top coat - Resolene - me leather expert doe not like this, he suggests Neat Lac

The Fiebing site has a drop down called "tips & tricks", their dye is so darned resonable (price) and they accept PayPal. Just sharing with you in case you're like me, getting ready to dye a bag.

Results forthcoming!

The average selling price for that bag in the past 90 days has been $36.50 so I guess the cost is relative to what you feel its worth. I'd probably not pay more than $40 just because it usually sells a bit cheaper than $60. That being said, I think it seems to already be in great basic shape and would clean up and condition very nicely. So, I guess, if you love it, go for it!! :D

Whoa...you have an "average selling price"...you guys have some very detailed information regarding these rehabs. Thanks very much. I'll think I'll wait for some better pricing.

These rehabs look like a lot of fun!

Haha...yes I use Terapeak to find what things are selling for since I do a lot of selling online.

I inherited a 12421 tote from my sister. It has a limgering perfume odor and some spits.

Since it is sateen in and out, do you all think it would be safe to wash it on the delicate cucle with some Woolite and tumble dry? Or air dry?

I don't know, sateen seems pretty delicate but I can't say because I've never tried to rehab a sateen bag. Maybe try hand-washing first? In the sink with warm water and Woolite, perhaps? Good luck!

Maybe a seamstress or a cobbler could repair the splits? If the splits aren't too bad, you could try using a tiny nail scissors to trim any obvious frayed threads. Then apply Fray Check to the edges to prevent further fraying. And then perhaps use a small amount of Fabric Glue (apply with a sturdy toothpick) to glue the splits down and secure them.

You can find Fray Check and Fabric Glue at Joann's or other fabric or hobby store. But I have never tried anything like this, it's just my idea of what I would probably attempt if I was rehabbing her.

Fray Check usually dries colorless but I have only used fabric glue on leather, not sateen. It is always a good idea to pick an obscure area of the bag and spot-test any products before using them in visible areas.

Pretty bag, I think it may be a "Katy tote" and I would love to have that namesake bag!

Well, I just scored a great buy at the Salvation Army store last night! For just $2.06 I got a genuine, small tan Bonnie Cashin designed bag! DemRam has authenticated it as a definite Coach Bonnie Cashin design! There is a picture of it in black in the 1960s timeline on the Bonnie Cashin Foundation site. It has a little metal Coach tab inside and the original striped lining!

The bag is in pretty good shape considering it is 50 years old, but it is dirty and musty-smelling and the biggest problem is that the leather/lining have started to slip out of the frame near the kisslock.

I have never attempted a rehab like this and would appreciate any advice. See pics at the links below! :yahoo:

You are so lucky Kate! I saw your post on the Authenicate this thread and wanted to congratulate you on such a wonderful find! What a cool little bag--can't wait to see what she looks like with a bit of tlc.

Here are the pictures. Thank you so much. Nothing happend to the lining

Beautiful bag, I hope you can save it! Sorry, I misread your post and thought that the lining was spotted.

All I can think of is to take the hangtag to Joann's fabrics or the hobby store and try and find a matching bottle of acryllic paint and an artist paintbrush to touch up the spots.

You can mix acrylics to get a match and you can easily wipe them off with water while they are still damp if you don't like the way it looks. Here is a post and pics about a bag that I rehabbed with acrylic paints, but it was a metallic leather bag. Good luck!

Hi all,
I'm at work right now so I can't post pics but I have a question (hope it should go in this thread). I won and received a Gramercy top handle purse from eBay. Love the bag and it's in good shape but I noticed that the underside of the turnlock plate has had a screw replaced. Instead of a flat head, it's a phillips head so if you use the turn lock, the phillips head screw will indent the leather. Has anyone had any success with JAX sending them a turnlock repair kit? or does anyone know where I can buy a flat head screw that I could use on the turnlock?

Also, on the underside of the flap, is a smudge in the leather making a white-ish color noticeable on the brown leather. It's not a super big deal to me since it's on the inside of the purse but does anyone know how I can get rid of this? I'll try my best to post pics later tonight if needed.

Thank you!
