Ok, I think I've done it on flickr, here is the link, http://www.flickr.com/photos/76058330@N03/sets/72157629209021702/

The title in flick is "Bonnie Cashin Rehab". Thoughts please!

She looks 100% better after washing! I would let her dry some more before deciding what to do next. You could keep washing her and working on the stains but you risk fading that gorgeous color. I have washed a few bags 2 or 3 times, including treating spots with oxi-clean gel and giving them a trip through the washing machine! But I have never worked on a bright burnt orange bag so I don't know how it will react.

When I have a light-colored bag and I can't get the stubborn stains out, I usually intentionally darken the bag a little by using a conditioner that contains wax, like blackrocks, because that can make the stains less noticeable.

I have used paint to cover worn areas, but usually just the strap edging and or a bit on the corners, but it would be really hard to match that glorious color and finish.

Having the bag dyed is my last resort but it can give it a whole new life! Good luck!

Wow! She looks wonderful already-great job! I absolutely love the style, it's so unusual. Keep the pics coming.
Ladies,
My new lovely bag is drying so nicely and when I get home this evening, I'll take more pics through Flickr. I have done two things today:

1) Consulted with a leather expert who is sure that I can dye the bag myself, he said he'd love to but wouldn't take me money for something I can do. He is in the proces of finding me a color and I would just pay for the dye. He spoke about air brushing and another method, but after seeing the bag (unlined and glove tanned), he suggested a dunk.

2) Went to Joann Fabrics and found the exact and or very close color, called Sienna Red. If I decide to not dye her and just touch her up, I have the color and sealant.

I did what Katev said and took the hangtag with me. I'll follow-up! I hope you guys are as excited as I am about this bag-if not my posts can be annoying, but I LOVE LEARNING!!!

BTW - No luck finding Apple Conditioner at Burlington - any other stores and/or recommendations for me (also rehabbing a navy blue XL duffle-will share this soon).

Ladies, just starting lurking in this thread and I am amazed at some of the bags, good job. I have a questions, some vintage bags I have lost the leather smell do any of you know how to get the smell back? Sorry If the question has already been answered.

Leather CPR is a good conditioner - I actually like it a bit better than Apple because it doesn't have any odor. I have found it at Tuesday Morning stores and I have heard that it has also been found at Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

If you prefer apple I am sure that you can order it online

Check out this thread:

It includes mention of a company called Scentsy that offers a leather fragrance in various forms, but I haven't tried it, see below:

Your bag looks amazing! It's fabulous. I love hearing about it and would also love to see more pictures

Pure emu oil will simply moisturize the leather. If you want to finish the leather, using one with beeswax will seal it, too. Since leather the isn't finished, you can choose to use just the oil or to let the wax give it a protective layer. If you are using a formulated product, just double check that it is at least 50% oil. If wax is the first ingredient, it will act as more of a finish than a protective moisturizer and won't absorb as readily.

You can also use pure oil followed by an application of raw beeswax. Just soften it slightly and apply lightly. This will finish your vachetta, though (which is what we aim to do in the horse world). If you don't apply wax, it will leave it unfinished as it was intended and won't harm your bag.

The product (pure vs. formulated) is your choice, but if you're trying to keep your leather as close to original as possible, the 100% oil is the way to go!
I have one more question for you - if I use a wax product to finish my vachetta leather, will that stop it from getting water marks? Or will the wax 'trap' the water in the leather and make water marking worse? Sorry that I really have no clue about this type, or any type, of leather. I do appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge so freely. Thank you

The wax will repel water and make it easier to care for in the future. Be aware that wax can darken leather, but on the yellow, I believe it will only make the color richer. I don't mean to make it sound like it will turn brown or anything, but rather just give a honeyed glaze to it.

If you are going to finish it, be sure to use an all natural beeswax. You can literally soften it in your hands or very, very slightly in the microwave and just massage it on. You might also decide to use one of the emu oil and beeswax formulas that you found. This will have the same sealant effect. Just find one that is more oil than wax.

The look of wax-finished leathers is gorgeous, plus it really does make them more durable and easier to care for in the long run. You will be able to worry much less about fading, water damage, and stains. I just want to make sure you know that once you wax it, it is a finished leather, whereas vachetta is the current, unfinished state.

I hope I answered your question!
