Katev gave a bath to a Madison fairly recently - I think there is a thread for it.
I didn't bathe my Biltmore. I scrubbed the lining with Soilove. The exterior was in good shape. I wouldn't be surprised if there was cardboard used for stiffening in these bags.
Thanks, whateve. I'm at the point now where I don't feel comfortable with a bag unless it's gotten a bath. Not sure what that's about. :p
I look for the thread you mentioned.
Thanks again!

I was that way for awhile but then I bathed a bag and it didn't improve it one bit. I'm afraid to bathe bags that aren't the standard unlined variety. The last few bags I've rehabbed I didn't bathe and I'm really happy with the results.

This is the final chapter on my 1994 Bottle Green Prairie Bag #9954 (the one with the fuzzy strap): http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-clubhouse/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-624452-658.html#post25026785).

Though she was pretty clean inside, I did find a few stray chocolate sprinkles (!) amid the usual purse stuff which I cleaned out with a dry toothbrush. Then the usual warm Dawn bath, good rinse and stuff to dry. The edges of the strap and the padded area around the turnlock needed touching up so I made a mixture of dark green (tube), black and a little tiny bit of red (yes, red) bottled acrylic. Got a pretty good match. When the paint was dry she got Leather CPR 2X, finished with Blackrocks 2X and buffed with a horsehair blend brush. She just glows!

Earlier this year my hubby and I moved his Mom from her house into independent living...a significant downsizing. I found a bottle of Tarni-shield (made by 3M) under her kitchen sink that says it not only polishes, but prevents tarnishing. YAY! Recently gave it a try on the hangtag chain on my black Stewardess, and again on this one, and I’m really pleased with the results. It’s not nearly as chemically-smelling as Brasso and seemed to work faster. Time will tell about the tarnish prevention :) The other brass on this bag was in fairly good patina-ed condition, so I left it alone. Someday I will get out the dremel (also from my MIL) and have a buffing party!
Gorgeous bag!! I am glad you were able to wash her ... what if those weren't "sprinkles"? ;)

Hi,
I just received this bag and I'm not familiar with this type of leather at all. It looks like pebbled leather but is much shinier.
Does anyone know if this is the kind of leather I can give a bath to? It needs work but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thanks for your help.

Congrats on this beautiful bag...I recently rehabbed a Madison Copley with good results. Here's a link:

Yesterday I picked up a black 96 Willis bag in great shape just needs bathed and shined. I posted it in the authenticate forum before I purchased it because even though everything about it was spot on for authentic, it had one issue that worried me. The wooden dowel is not covered in leather. Hyacinth said it was fine but have you ever seen a Willis with this issue? How in the world would the leather have ever come off. Is this something coach would fix/re-do if I had it sent in? I can see that this probably wouldn't be a hard fix. If you unscrew all the handle hardware and take them out since they actually go through the wood, the dowel would slide right out and could be covered and reinserted. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this issue before.

I've seen them without the leather covering before. Usually if it is fake and the dowel isn't covered, the counterfeiters will have painted the dowel. The leather must have fallen off somehow. I doubt Coach will repair it since repairs on older bags are usually limited to hardware failures. I think you could either paint it yourself or find some leather to cover it with.

I want to give a big Thank You to who ever it was who posted about wrapping brass in stretch wrap with the cleaner. I've been doing this ever since and it works great! I still have to do some scrubbing on it with a toothbrush but the time has been cut down to almost nothing. Plus, I started using steel wool on the stubborn areas.

Clean brass in a tenth of the time.

Wish I could remember who it was but who ever you are, Thanks! :yahoo:

I'm pretty sure it was Jessi who suggested the stretch wrap. I use steel wool too.

I found this Mercer Small Soft Hobo #7423 on a recent trip to a Goodwill Bargain Barn for $1.00. Purses are usually $2.00, but I guess the cashier thought since it was nylon (and unidentified as a Coach, cause the hangtag was missing), it should be cheaper. Plus it was really dirty...sticky like it had been stored between 2 vinyl bags or other such nonsense! But it was red, so I took a gamble. Before pics are here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-818914-224.html#post25066689

The inside was very clean and brushed out easily with a toothbrush...Then the nightmare began...Trying to help with the stickiness, the bath with Dawn was much warmer than usual and I sprayed on some Mean Green and scrubbed with a toothbrush. Then I poured on some Soilove and scrubbed again. Stuffed her to dry. Dark areas remained, so I saturated her with soilove again, tied uer up in a pillowcase and ran a normal cycle in the washing machine with Arm & Hammer with Oxi-Clean. Rinsed well and stuffed her again. Still stained, so I sprayed her down with Awesome spray, rinsed and stuffed again.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: I really went too far with this one :( Though it’s made of nylon twill, one of my “cleaners” (or aggressive combination thereof) actually took out color at the top of the bag, along both sides of the zipper! I certainly thought nylon was colorfast, but apparently not. Overall, the bag is hugely improved and because of the short strap, the color loss is not too visible, and the stickiness is GONE. OK by me, but lesson learned!

The leather, though, came through all of this beautifully. Go figure! I also have this bag in black, with a gunmetal hangtag, so they can share.
