I just bought this gorgeous little white bag. The leather is in great condition. Because it is white, I am worried about which products are safe to use, plus I don't want it to end up shiny. I think it needs some protection though. What should I use?
What a great find-I love it! Very unique bag.:smile1:

Thank you! You know it is because of you that I started looking at vintage, and now I am afraid that I am hooked. I was prepared for having to do a rehab job and then I stumbled upon this cute little gem, so in some ways, I am relieved that it is already perfect. Now I just have to worry about keeping it that way. I wasn't looking for a light colored bag - in fact, this is my first - I tend to be drawn to deep, rich colors.
The seller referred it to a bag that Jackie O would have carried, and although this bag wasn't made until 1998, I can just see it with a pillbox hat! (But I am not the hat wearing type!)
I will definitely look into using Lexol products. We have a leather recliner that I have treated with mink oil. I tried using mink oil on the legacy keyfob that is in my avatar and although I think it helped with the cracking, it made it kind of sticky, so I'm sure that it isn't the best product to use on bags.

Well, I warned you that rehabbing is addicting but there is nothing negative about finding a vintage bag that is already in excellent shape! I've never seen that bag, what is the name and style number? Very cute!

It is style number 9043 and it is called the geometric bag. Now I need to find a vintage white hangtag for it. This listing has a picture of the catalog page:

I love all the bright colors it came in but I am partial to my white one. There isn't a brown one in the catalog picture, but there is a brown one listed on ebay.
I would imagine that it would be nearly impossible to rehab a white bag without dying it.

Light-colored bags in general are difficult rehabs; I wouldn't recommend attempting to rehab a white bag that wasn't already in excellent condition. Maybe just a little cleaning and conditioning and metal polish and thats all!

I think it would be very difficult to match the exact shade of white for the replacement hangtag, especially because light colors may change a little over time. I suggest calling Coach in JAX and asking for a free replacement goldtone hangtag to match the hardware. I think a gold tag would look great with that cute little bag!

Good idea! I figure it would be a nightmare to find a white vintage tag that would match. I really like the gold hardware. I know a lot of Coachies prefer silver but I think gold complements many colors better than silver.

Here's some pics of another rescue, my Espresso Brown Vintage NYC Stewardess bag...I got it for $34.99 shipped! She was in pretty rough shape with lots of texture/ripples in the leather from use and variations in the color. I think now after treatment with Blackrock's and Obenaufs she looks well loved. First pics are before(courtesy of the seller) and following pics are after treatment.:smile1:

You know, I am just amazed at some of the craftsmanship here with respect to some great rescues. I had a few older Coach bags purchased in the 80's, and I really don't think that these vintage bags could be made today without a $1000 price tag on them. Those are the real finds!

Blackrocks Leather N' Rich is a leather conditioner that tends to darken and even out color but it must be applied lightly. Obenaufs LP (Leather Protection) is to condition and give some protection against the elements, i.e rain, snow, etc. It does darken leather initially when applied but the leather usually will lighten back up again. Glove tanned leather generally will not need Obenaufs but I like to put on a few applications to be on the safe side. It also has antibacterial properties from beeswax and retards mold/mildew growth as well. When I get an old bag I like to apply a few rounds just in case. Hope that helps!

I absolutely agree! The heavy, thick ,supple leather that was used then can really take a beating and come out looking great. I also love the heavy brass hardware as well. I definitely have a soft spot for many of the vintage pieces-they're classic, age so well and still look in style 30-40 years later!

Beautiful bag! She looks so awesome now!! I am considering ordering Obenaufs soon. I am liking the Blackrock on my dark bags that are really dry and scratched but I have some uneven patchy brown vintage bags that I think I need Obenaufs for.
Thank you! I love Obenaufs-one of the reasons I like it so much is that it smells like honey and is easy to use and apply once it warms up in your hands.
