advice needed on a dyed musette:

i recently bought a musette on ebay; turns out it was dyed. when i went to condition it, it took up color, so into the bath it went; gallons and gallons of dirty yellow water later, i still don't think the dye is gone yet. is there any other way to get the dye off, or am i stuck?

doing some research, i was able to find the original sale, and so comparing the original sale bag to the one i bought, i could immediately see the added color. duh, silly me!!

i'm really annoyed because this person posts here regularly.
so my question to TPFers: shouldn't we SAY on the BAY when we've dyed or enhanced a bag????? it only seems fair; or am i just being naive?! so much discussion here about how to improve/rehab/dye, etc, but maybe we need more discussion about how a TPFer should present these bags.

OK so how do i get the rest of the dye off this bag; underneath all the crud is a fairly nice tan musette, i don't know why somebody would go to the bother of ruining it!!! even my hands are yellow/orange now.

Wow, sorry that happened.

I am with you, I totally agree that if a bag has been dyed or enhanced, this information should be disclosed. If it is not, it is a misrepresentation of the product.

I know of someone on this forum who purchased a bag, washed it and was able to get almost all of the dirt off, while a few stains remained. She then added it to the bay for many times her price paid, stating that would only "need a slight cleaning!", knowing full well that those stains would likely not come off.

I am assuming you mean the Musette that I sold to you? Why didn't you contact me first before incorrectly assuming that I dyed the bag!?! I most certainly did not dye the bag and if I had I would absolutely have disclosed it. I have been buying ans selling and postin here on TPF for quite awhile and would NEVER do something as unethical as not disclose somehting like dyeing a bag. The one other tan Musette I had up and a horrible red ink stain that I used leather paint to sparingly cover and I disclosed that even though you couldn't even tell it was painted.
In my experience rehabbing when bathing a bag sometimes it loses tons of color and sometimes it releases hardly anything. To my eye it did not seem dyed when I bought it from another seller on eBay. I conditioned the bag with Blackrocks and Obenaufs--my stnadard recipe and some color lifted bu no more then usual. I am really at a loss here and quite upset that you think I would try to pull one over on you--another TPFer who shares my love of Carriers and Musettes.
Care to elaborate? If I am mistaken and you are refering to another seller please accept my apologies.

yes, will do. i didnt mean to single anybody out; and the person who responded was not the one who sold me the bag, so just to get that straight for the record!!

but still, i'd like advice on how to remove dye from a bag that has been dyed.
I think acetone might help although I've been trying forever to remove some acrylic paint from a bag without much success. If the dye is just on the surface, you might have more luck than if it soaked through. If you are really desperate, you could sand it off, then use fine steel wool to restore the texture.

acetone as in nail=polish remover? just swipe the bag lightly with it? i've not done that before, but will give it a try. thank you.

I wish we could have seen the bag before it was dunked. It is true that many bags just naturally release tons of color that haVe never been re-dyed. Was there something about the bag requiring it to be washed (mis-shapen, etc) Before you do anything drastic from this point on, could you post photos of it as it is right now? I have a deep love of the Musette and Carrier bags and would love to see how it is right now.

too late for the before; but i'll post an 'after'. i bought three such bags the past few weeks, which is what led to the confusion over 'which muse' was in the line of fire.
i NEED to get over my obsession with musette & carrier bags!!! i mean really, how many can a single individual use in a lifetime? i feel that i need to have one of each shade in which they were made, it's crazy. some day i'll post pics of the collection.

but i will try the acetone, maybe on the strap or inner pocket first, to see what happens. first have to get some. i must be the only person in the world who doesn't have nail-polish remover. i have a ton of lexol; blackrock; leather restore/refinish; etc etc. but no acetone.

Thank you for the clarification...Jessi is right perhaps if we see a pic of the bag now before you do anything drastic we can offer some advice.

Advice needed on additional coats of conditioner

Rehabbers - would appreciate your thoughts on when to add more conditioner. The TPF iPhone app is down and I haven't been able to post my pictures. The basic rehab process on a black Legacy Zip is done - including two coats of Leather CPR and two coats of Blackrock separated by 24 hours for each individual treatment. Brass hardware has been cleaned of verdigris (as best I could) using Cape Cod polishing cloths, toothpicks, and paper towels.

The bag has some "variations" in the black dye - maybe due to conditioning over old scuffs, but overall in good shape. Feels a bit stiff now, so I am wondering if I should do (a) one more coat of Blackrock or (b) a coat of another moisturizing conditioner.

I have Blackrock, Leather CPR, and Lexol conditioner available. It may also just take some weeks of use to soften up a bit. There is an ink mark on the inside that never completely disappeared but overall I am pleased.

I would probably massage the bag a bit. The warmth of your hands should work the conditioner and Blackrocks in better. Then see how it feels. Good luck!
