Ladies, hello there, new to this forum but not new to loving coach. I've been stalking you guys for awhile  and I've learned so much.

I posted in another thread about this find on ebay - been selling and buying since 2002, and was told this bag was worth the rebhab.

It has taken a beating and when I get it, I plan to follow "Katev" (I believe that's her ID) suggestions - vacuum, dunk (ivory), rotate, dry, condition with Apple....

I'll post before and afters, but in the meantime, share with me your thoughts!:graucho:

Ladies!! Lookey Lookey what I have found - an original Bonnie Cashin Body Bag in red! :yahoo:

Now, here's where you come in, I saw somewhere, I believe between Katev and DemRam that the older Cashin's need additional love when rehabbing? Is that true, something about dry and cracked leather? As you can see, there is no damage, unlike my first body bag, which was a re-make. I want to dunk for smell and just to give it some love, suggestions!

I hope my images upload and BTW, I visited the UCLA Archives and this lovely bag was drawn in Red with Bonnie's notes on it.

It helps for us to see the actual bag and whatever issues it has, but in general, we dont' recommend saddle soap since bags used in leather is a bit more delicate, tho' old Coach is pretty over all tough. I use a warm, not hot, sink full of lightly sudsy water. I have started exclusively using Leather Therapy Wash and Lexol Leather Cleaner as an additive to the water I am using, but others who haven't invested in those things yet, are using dish soap, Dawn, and/or even Woolite if you want to be extra gentle. Be careful when applying concentrated soap to a stained area. I've learned you can end up with a "scrubby/swirl" pattern. I try to gently brush affected area with a soft brush/toothbrush and use mildest soap. For darker bags you can be a bit more aggressive. One BT bag I got too aggressive with had a bit of aswirling discoloration in spots, but it seemed to recede when I used Leather Therapy Oil which darkened the bag to a rich Brit Tan but helped disguise my crazy cleaning movements. Anyhow, I could go on and on. Reading this thread in its entirely, tho' time consuming, will TELL YOU EVERYTHING you'd ever want and need to know as much as we've learned it ourselves
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I didn't get the daypack, but I plan on looking for more diamonds in the ruff and will post photos when I have questions with them. Thank you

Wow, what a find! Congratulations, fantastic buy!

I think we were talking about the Cashin for Meyers bag and the leather might not be quite as good and the bags can dry and crack.

I think that the leather on the old coach bags is fine and can take some rough treatment. Red is always a delicate color as you know - but I wouldn't worry too much about the bag being delicate!

Good luck, how gorgeous and it's great that you found the original drawing in the archives!

Any suggestions on how to get the softness back on my rehabbed bag....smoke smell isn't gone, but finally at an acceptable level, and its still in the drying stage. Its a 98 equestrian bag, so its (i guess) supposed to be a stiff leather. It looks a lot like the archival duffle, but its SOOO stiff now, i kinda don't like it. i like coach for the soft leather and this bag feels like a saddle (ha ha since its equestrian ;) ) any suggestions??? someone mentioned pledge furniture polish...

I have an equestrian flap and it is structured but still soft. Some of my bags have come out stiff after rehabbing and I think it might be that the soap didn't get rinsed out well enough. I have softened some bags up with mink oil. You could also use emu oil or neetsfoot oil.

I know what you mean - they clearly say that they are in poor condition, some with holes and tears but, I didn't even go that far in thinking about it....I was just thinking of ALL the washing and conditioning we could be doing!! !:D

Did you see what it ended at? With shipping, over $650! The winner's got huge feedback, so is probably a reseller.

Here are the final pictures of my Coach Station after applying Leather Honey (I decided to go with that rather than Lexol) and Black Rocks. The noticeable differences is that it is MUCH cleaner, no "old" smell, darker leather (especially around the edges) and more shape to it. I wish I could take better pictures but the cellphone camera isn't focusing enough to get the details on camera. There's not much difference from when it came out of the washing machine. Also, the bag was in good condition before.

Note, I didn't polish the brass.
